Reliability and validity of EuroQol-5 Dimensions-5 Levels in patients with haematologic malignancies: a cross-sectional study in China.

OBJECTIVES: Robust assessment of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is essential for evaluating the disease burden in patients with haematologic malignancies. This study examined the performance of the EuroQol-5 Dimensions-5 Levels (EQ-5D) instrument in patients with multiple myeloma (MM), acute leukaemia (AL) and lymphoma using time trade-off (TTO)-elicited utility scores as the reference, and explored factors contributing to discrepancies between EQ-5D and TTO utilities. DESIGN: We performed a cross-sectional observational study using EQ-5D and TTO to assess HRQoL. SETTING: A leading t

Boosting and broadening recruitment to UK cancer trials: towards a blueprint for action.

Recruitment and retention in cancer trials are long-standing issues, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The UK National Institute of Health Research and leading clinicians have emphasised the urgency to achieve and surpass prepandemic levels of participation. Data from a recent UK trial demonstrated the impact of COVID-19 and highlighted factors that limited recruitment. In response to this worldwide problem, studies have identified strategies for remediation at the levels of funding, the research environment, study design and trial team-related aspects, yet evidence of progress is lacking.

Health Equity Among Black Women in the United States.

Black women in the United States have experienced substantial improvements in health during the last century, yet health disparities persist. These health disparities are in large part a reflection of the inequalities experienced by Black women on a host of social and economic measures. In this paper, we examine the structural contributors to social and economic conditions that create the landscape for persistent health inequities among Black women. Demographic measures related to the health status and health (in)equity of Black women are reviewed. Current rates of specific physical and mental

Unpacking adiposity: a narrative critical appraisal of diverse obesity definitions.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a complex, multifaceted chronic disease that poses a major global health challenge. Traditionally, population-level screening and follow-up have relied heavily on body mass index (BMI). Although BMI provides a simple, standardized measure for epidemiological studies, it does not account for individual variations in muscle mass, fat distribution, or metabolic health. Consequently, relying solely on weight-to-height ratios-even when supplemented with waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, or waist-to-height ratio-limits precise individual diagnosis and comprehensive heal

BACKGROUND: One presentation of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is characterized by picky eating, i.e., selective eating based on the sensory properties of food. The present study has two aims. The first is to describe distress and impairment in individuals with ARFID secondary to picky eating. The second is to determine whether eating behaviors hypothesized to be specific to picky eating can differentiate picky eaters with and without ARFID from typical eaters (e.g., individuals not reporting picky or disordered eating) and individuals who strongly endorse attitudes associat

Gender disparity in maintenance hemodialysis units in South India: a cross-sectional observational study.

BackgroundDiseases manifest differently according to gender in many medical specialties. However, sex differences in kidney diseases have not been well explored worldwide, especially in India. These differences could also be attributed to sociocultural factors. Although CKD is more prevalent in women worldwide, most men are initiated on kidney replacement therapy (KRT). This study aimed to examine sex disparities in patients on maintenance hemodialysis.Materials and methodsA cross-sectional observational study was conducted in two maintenance hemodialysis units at the Institute of Nephrourolog

Cancer: a looming public health crisis in Africa-a call to accelerate equitable access to medicines.

The global incidence of cancer is on the rise, with Africa experiencing a particularly steep increase in both cancer incidence and mortality. This upward trend is driven by a combination of factors, including population growth, poverty, aging, urbanization, and the adoption of lifestyles that increase the risk of cancer. It is projected that from 2022 to 2045, the incidence of cancer in Africa will increase by 106.8%, while cancer mortality will rise by 111.7% if no action is taken. In contrast, Europe is expected to see increases of only 22.5% in incidence and 32.2% in mortality. Despite glob
