SCGB1D2 inhibits growth of Borrelia burgdorferi and affects susceptibility to Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is a tick-borne disease caused by bacteria of the genus Borrelia. The host factors that modulate susceptibility for Lyme disease have remained mostly unknown. Using epidemiological and genetic data from FinnGen and Estonian Biobank, we identify two previously known variants and an unknown common missense variant at the gene encoding for Secretoglobin family 1D member 2 (SCGB1D2) protein that increases the susceptibility for Lyme disease. Using live Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb) we find that recombinant reference SCGB1D2 protein inhibits the growth of Bb in vitro more efficiently than

Public health threat of novel zoonotic diseases: literature review.

Zoonoses, diseases transmitted from animals to humans, continue to challenge public health despite advancements in controlling infectious diseases. The intricate link between human, animal, and environmental health is emphasised by the fact that zoonoses contribute to 60% of emerging human infections. Wet markets, wildlife hunting, intensive wildlife farming, and interactions between domestic animals and humans are key transmission sources. Historical examples like the bubonic plague and English Sweats illustrate the longstanding impact of zoonotic diseases. With new transmission patterns emer

Weight a minute: Exploring the effect on weight and body composition after the initiation of elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor in adults with CF.

BACKGROUND: Life expectancy for people with CF (PwCF) continues to increase. However, a trend of overweight and obesity is emerging along with concern of developing comorbitities. Body composition (BC) is associated with several health indices. However, body mass index (BMI) does not provide information on BC. METHODS: BMI, fat mass (FM), fat free mass (FFM), using bioelectrical impedance, lung function and sweat chloride (SwCl) were assessed in adult PwCF in routine clinic before and after commencement of the CFTR modulator Elexacaftor/Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor. RESULTS: 109 PwCF (76 male) under

Development of skin diseases following systemic exposure: example of dioxins.

Most skin manifestations of exposure to toxic compounds are a consequence of a direct contact with the toxicants. However, some toxicants may reach the skin following systemic exposure, and promote skin diseases. Good examples of such chemicals are dioxin-like compounds. This family of lipophilic molecules comprises polychlorinated (dibenzodioxins, dibenzofurans and biphenyls). The most potent member of this family is 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). Following oral ingestion of as little as a few mg TCDD, skin lesions appear in a couple of weeks, starting from the face and diffuse t

Bivalvular infective endocarditis complicated by perivalvular abscess and aorto-right atrium fistula.

Infective endocarditis caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in patients without a history of intravenous drug abuse and endovascular procedures is rare. We present a middle-aged man with fever, chills, night sweats and dyspnoea for 2 weeks. Physical examination and blood cultures were drawn, and the patient was empirically started on antibiotics. Unfortunately, the patient experienced progressive clinical deterioration requiring endotracheal intubation and vasopressor support. Transthoracic echocardiogram followed by transesophageal echocardiogram was performed that showed bicuspid aortic valve, s

A major pain in the hip - Destruction of the left acetabulum and femoral head secondary to Tuberculosis: A case report and review of the literature.

A 68-year-old-gentleman presented with left hip pain, night sweats, fatigue, and weight loss. He had previously experienced pain with white discharge until he underwent an arthroscopic washout and reduction. The left lower limb was shortened and wasted with limited hip movements. He had recently travelled to Zambia, his country of origin. Imaging demonstrated a large mass with chronic erosions of the acetabulum and femoral head. Synovial biopsy grew Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which was treated with rifampicin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol for 2 months then 4 months of rifampicin an

Anaplastic large cell lymphoma presenting as a mass in the uterine cervix: a case report.

T-cell lymphoma is an extremely rare form of malignancy in the female genital tract. Most of the reported cases of lymphoma are B-cell lymphomas. A few cases of primary T-cell lymphomas involving the vagina or the vulva have been reported. We are reporting the first case of anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) presenting as a uterine cervical mass. The patient is a 24-year-old female who presented to the emergency room with a history of menorrhagia, night sweats and 40-pound weight loss. The diagnosis of ALCL was confirmed through immunohistochemical studies with strong CD30 and ALK expressio

Primary Cutaneous Cribriform Carcinoma of the Heel: A Rare Case Report.

Primary cutaneous cribriform carcinoma (PCCC) is an extremely rare carcinoma of the sweat glands. In this case report, we present a 41-year-old man with PCCC in the heel. The patient had heel pain for 10 months, and his complaints had increased in the past 2 months. Physical examination revealed a firm nonmobile mass at his heel. The PCCC in the heel was excised by wide resection after biopsy, and the defect that occurred after resection was reconstructed with a vascularized free anterolateral thigh flap. There were no complications during or after the surgery. No recurrence or metastasis was

Maskne: A New Acne Variant in Covid-19 Era.

"Maskne" has been one of the negative spinoffs of the universally acceptable and effective role of face mask in containing the ongoing pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 virus or COVID 19. Several factors contribute to its aetiopathogenesis including heat, humidity, mechanical friction and microbiome dysbiosis in a complex interplay under the occlusive area of the mask. Clinically, the morphology is not very different from acne vulgaris with comedones and inflammatory acne, but in a characteristic distribution over a roughly circular area of face covered by mask. Since the use of face masks is likely to c

Association of Giant Cell Arteritis with Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma.

Previous studies suggest that there may be an association between cancer and autoimmune diseases. We describe the case of a 59-year-old patient who did not have any significant diseases in the last year. She had new onset of fever of unknown aetiology, headache, fatigue and night sweats. We used laboratory methods to rule out infectious diseases. Significant laboratory findings reported increased signs of inflammation and anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) positivity. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging showed the origin of the patient's difficulties, arteritis, with inc

Poroid Hidradenoma: A Two-Case Report and Literature Review.

Poroid hidradenoma (PH) is a rare benign tumor that shows differentiation of the eccrine sweat gland. It occurs mainly in adults, presenting as a 0.5 to 2 cm-sized intradermal nodule, mostly on the head, extremities, trunk and neck. We report two rare cases of PH, one on the face and the other on the heel. The first patient was a 50-year-old male who had a solitary, skin-colored nodule on his right temple for 6 months. The second patient was a 67-year-old female who presented with a solitary, bean-sized, tender nodule on her left heel for 1 year. The common histological examination finding was

Cutaneous manifestations of orthostatic intolerance syndromes.

Dysautonomia refers to a group of autonomic nervous system disorders that affect nearly 70 million people worldwide. One subset of dysautonomia includes syndromes of orthostatic intolerance (OI), which primarily affect adolescents and women of childbearing age. Due to the variability in disease presentation, the average time from symptom onset to diagnosis of dysautonomia is 6 years. In general, there is a paucity of dermatological research articles describing patients with dysautonomia. The objective of this review is to summarize the existing literature on cutaneous manifestations in dysauto

An epidermal patch for the simultaneous monitoring of haemodynamic and metabolic biomarkers.

Monitoring the effects of daily activities on the physiological responses of the body calls for wearable devices that can simultaneously track metabolic and haemodynamic parameters. Here we describe a non-invasive skin-worn device for the simultaneous monitoring of blood pressure and heart rate via ultrasonic transducers and of multiple biomarkers via electrochemical sensors. We optimized the integrated device so that it provides mechanical resiliency and flexibility while conforming to curved skin surfaces, and to ensure reliable sensing of glucose in interstitial fluid and of lactate, caffei
