Meta-Analysis of Structural and Functional Brain Abnormalities in Cocaine Addiction.

BACKGROUND: Previous voxel-based morphometric (VBM) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have shown changes in brain structure and function in cocaine addiction (CD) patients compared to healthy controls (HC). However, the results of these studies are poorly reproducible, and it is unclear whether there are common and specific neuroimaging changes. This meta-analysis study aimed to identify structural, functional, and multimodal abnormalities in CD patients. METHODS: The PubMed database was searched for VBM and task-state fMRI studies performed in CD patients between Janua

A Wearable Vibratory Device (The Emma Watch) to Address Action Tremor in Parkinson Disease: Pilot Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that has a wide range of motor symptoms, such as tremor. Tremors are involuntary movements that occur in rhythmic oscillations and are typically categorized into rest tremor or action tremor. Action tremor occurs during voluntary movements and is a debilitating symptom of PD. As noninvasive interventions are limited, there is an ever-increasing need for an effective intervention for individuals experiencing action tremors. The Microsoft Emma Watch, a wristband with 5 vibrating motors, is a noninvasive, nonpharmaceutical interven

Link of gray matter volume to cognitive and motor function in elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a transitional state between normal aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD), characterized by subtle cognitive decline. Amnestic MCI (aMCI), in particular, is a critical precursor often progressing to AD. There is growing interest in understanding the neuroanatomical correlates of aMCI, especially the role of gray matter volume (GMV) in cognitive and motor function decline. This study hypothesized that aMCI patients will exhibit reduced GMV, particularly in brain regions associated with cognition and motor control, impacting both cognitive performance

Large-scale changes in network interactions as a physiological signature of spatial neglect.

The relationship between spontaneous brain activity and behaviour following focal injury is not well understood. Here, we report a large-scale study of resting state functional connectivity MRI and spatial neglect following stroke in a large (n=84) heterogeneous sample of first-ever stroke patients (within 1-2 weeks). Spatial neglect, which is typically more severe after right than left hemisphere injury, includes deficits of spatial attention and motor actions contralateral to the lesion, and low general attention due to impaired vigilance/arousal. Patients underwent structural and resting st

Reductions in Corpus Callosum Volume Partially Mediate Effects of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure on IQ.

Disproportionate volume reductions in the basal ganglia, corpus callosum (CC) and hippocampus have been reported in children with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). However, few studies have investigated these reductions in high prevalence communities, such as the Western Cape Province of South Africa, and only one study made use of manual tracing, the gold standard of volumetric analysis. The present study examined the effects of PAE on subcortical neuroanatomy using manual tracing and the relation of volumetric reductions in these regions to IQ and performance on the California Verbal Learning

Should fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography be the first-line imaging investigation for restaging the laryngeal carcinoma patients?

Posttreatment detection of residual/recurrence disease in the head and neck cancers is not an easy task. Treatment induces changes create difficulties in diagnosis on conventional imaging (computed tomography [CT], magnetic resonance imaging) as well as macroscopic inspection (direct laryngoscopy). Hence, we evaluate the diagnostic performance of contract-enhanced F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET)/CT in restaging of laryngeal carcinoma Postchemotherapy-surgery and/or radiation therapy. We retrospectively analyzed patients of carcinoma larynx (n = 100) who has compl

Improved self adaptive differential evolution optimized BP neural network for short term entry passenger flow prediction in urban rail transit.

To address the issues of traditional BP neural networks being prone to local optima and exhibiting limited prediction accuracy in short-term station entry passenger flow prediction for urban rail transit, this study proposes an intelligent prediction method based on Improved Self-Adaptive Differential Evolution optimized BP Neural Network (ISADE-BPNN). First, the research object is defined as hourly station entry passenger flow, with analysis of its spatiotemporal characteristics and primary influencing factors. Second, a passenger flow data collection platform is constructed using Service-Ori

Statistical analysis of Casson hybrid nanofluid flow over a stenotic artery.

The flow of blood through stenotic arteries is considered one of the most significant areas of investigation in the world of mathematical fluid mechanics. This significance arises from the topic's application to the field of biomedicine. Within an arterial system of blood that has been stenosed, the goal of this research initiative is to investigate the effect that nanoparticles have on the characteristics that define the human circulatory system. The current investigation analyzes blood flow behavior in a controlled, permeable artery employing the Casson hybrid nanofluid model and, additional

Do combined oral contraceptives have long-term effects? Little evidence of an enduring effect on cognitive function in former users.

The use of combined oral contraceptives (COCs) is associated with subtle differences in brain activity and in certain cognitive, perceptual, or affective processes among current COC users compared with non-users. Whether any differences persist after the COCs are discontinued is essentially unknown. In a retrospective analysis of a cognitive dataset from healthy adults (N = 221, Mage = 23.78 yrs), we asked whether any residual effects of COC use could be identified in former users (who had discontinued their COCs ∼30 mo prior) on standardized tests of verbal fluency and visuospatial function.

Privileged Functional Connectivity between the Visual Word Form Area and the Language System.

The visual word form area (VWFA) is a region in the left occipitotemporal sulcus of literate individuals that is purportedly specialized for visual word recognition. However, there is considerable controversy about its functional specificity and connectivity, with some arguing that it serves as a domain-general, rather than word-specific, visual processor. The VWFA is a critical region for testing hypotheses about the nature of cortical organization, because it is known to develop only through experience (i.e., reading acquisition), and widespread literacy is too recent to have influenced gene

Performance-based functional assessment in ankylosing spondylitis: Clinical utility and validation of the Back Performance Scale (BPS-TR).

BackgroundSelf-report questionnaires are commonly used to assess functional status in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). However, these instruments may not fully reflect patients' actual physical performance. The Back Performance Scale (BPS-TR) may provide a more objective, performance-based approach to evaluating functional limitations. This study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the BPS-TR in patients with AS.MethodsA total of 107 patients with AS were included. Functional performance was assessed using five standardized tasks: sock, pick-up, roll-up, fingertip-to-

Association of antidepressant and benzodiazepine use, and anticholinergic burden with cognitive performance in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is characterized by cognitive impairment affecting everyday functioning. Earlier research has hypothesized that antidepressants may associate with better cognitive functioning, but results are mixed. This study explored the association between antidepressant use and cognitive performance in terms of reaction time and visual learning in a clinical sample. In addition, we examined benzodiazepine use and anticholinergic burden. Study participants were drawn from the SUPER-Finland cohort, collected among patients with psychotic illnesses in 2016-2018 throughout Finland (n = 10,410).

From Controllers to Multimodal Input: A Chronological Review of XR Interaction Across Device Generations.

This study provides a chronological analysis of how Extended Reality (XR) interaction techniques have evolved from early controller-centered interfaces to natural hand- and gaze-based input and, more recently, to multimodal input, with a particular focus on the role of XR devices. We collected 46 user study-based XR interaction papers published between 2016 and 2024, including only studies that explicitly defined their interaction techniques and reported quantitative and/or qualitative evaluation results. For each study, we documented the XR hardware and software development kits (SDKs) used a
