The skin serves as the primary barrier against external physical damage and microbial invasion. When the skin is compromised, effective wound management becomes essential for maintaining tissue integrity and preventing complications. Although conventional wound dressings provide basic protection, they often fail to meet the complex and dynamic requirements of different stages of wound healing. Owing to their highly hydrated three-dimensional networks, tunable physicochemical properties, and excellent biocompatibility, hydrogels have emerged as promising platforms for advanced wound care. Recent advances in Drug Delivery Systems (DDS) have focused on minimizing systemic side effects while enhancing therapeutic precision. Endogenous gas-responsive DDS represent a promising approach that utilizes biologically active gasotransmitters, including carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO), and hydrogen sulfide (H2S), as internal triggers for targeted drug release. These gases play crucial roles in physiological processes such as tissue repair, vasodilation, and the regulation of inflammation, underscoring their significance in biological systems. However, their therapeutic application

Resorbable collagen membranes are widely used for guided bone regeneration (GBR) but suffer from premature degradation, inadequate space maintenance, and poor infection and osteoimmune regulation in a bacteria-rich oral environment. Herein, we developed a hydrophobic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory Janus membrane (HAA-JM) on a clinical collagen platform, directionally engineering soft-tissue and bone-facing sides. Via silane coupling and thiol-ene click chemistry, the outer surface was grafted with perfluoroalkyl groups, enhancing wet mechanical strength and anti-collapse performance and slo

BACKGROUND: Bone defects caused by trauma, congenital disorders and degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis remain a major clinical challenge, especially in developing regions. Although bone grafting is the current gold standard for treating bone defects, it faces limitations, including donor site morbidity, limited availability and immune rejection. This study developed and evaluated a novel hybrid biomaterial composed of bovine β-lactoglobulin fibrils (BLGFs), oxidized dextran (ODEX) and collagen (COL) extracted from Chambo tilapia fish skin for bone tissue engineering applications.

Tissue engineering requires biomedical devices that stabilize wounds, then degrade as tissue regenerates. However, published material degradation rates are often conflicting. Incorporating monitoring functionality into implanted devices allows real-time assessment of degradation and failure, but requires contrast agents, as most biomedical devices are composed of polymeric materials invisible to medical imaging modalities. Computed tomography (CT)-visible radiopaque composites were created from 5-20wt% tantalum oxide (TaOx) nanoparticles in polymers with distinct degradation profiles: polycapr

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) initiates a pathological cascade dominated by mitochondrial dysfunction and unregulated oxidative stress, collectively generating an inhibitory lesion microenvironment that abrogates endogenous neural regenerative capacity. Herein, we fabricate a multifunctional conductive hydrogel scaffold by incorporating Mo2Ti2C3 MXene nanosheets, hollow CeO2 nanoparticles, and neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) within a crosslinkable matrix. When paired with exogenous electrical stimulation (ES), this combinatorial therapeutic platform synergistically activates two core mitochondrial

Peri-implantitis, a plaque-associated inflammatory disease characterized by progressive bone loss around functional implants, poses a significant threat to the long-term success of oral rehabilitation. The understanding of its etiology has evolved from a traditional infection model to a dysbiosis-based host-microbe interaction disorder model. This paradigm shift underscores the critical need for early detection and novel therapeutic strategies. This review comprehensively summarizes recent research advances within a logical framework: microbial dysbiosis, early diagnosis, treatment evolution,

The sequential phases of tissue healing-inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling-demand distinct pharmacokinetic profiles that conventional drug delivery systems fail to provide, creating a "chronotherapy gap" that contributes to chronic wound pathologies. Hydrogels, with their highly tunable network structures, offer a unique platform to program release kinetics in synchrony with these healing timelines. This review systematically examines design strategies for phase-synchronized hydrogel systems, categorized into three hierarchical paradigms: intrinsic network control (crosslinking densit

Agarose is a thermoreversible, highly biocompatible polysaccharide increasingly used in tissue engineering (TE). Its molecular architecture, optical clarity, tunable mechanics, and chemical inertness make agarose hydrogels attractive scaffolds for generating bioartificial tissues by TE. This review summarizes current knowledge on agarose extraction, purification, structural variants, and physicochemical properties regarding gelation behavior, stiffness, porosity, and bioactivity. We discuss how agarose type and concentration critically determine hydrogel biomechanical and optical performance,

Intrauterine adhesion (IUA) is a fibrotic disorder resulting from aberrant repair following injury to the endometrial basal layer, leading to menstrual abnormalities, infertility, recurrent miscarriage, and pregnancy complications. Although hysteroscopic adhesiolysis remains the primary clinical treatment, the rate of postoperative re-adhesion is still high, especially in patients with moderate-to-severe IUA. Moreover, mechanical separation alone is often insufficient to restore intact endometrial architecture and reproductive function. Hydrogels, with their hydrated three-dimensional networks

Biologics targeting TNF-α, IL-23, or IL-17 clear psoriatic plaques effectively, yet lesions recur at the same anatomical sites upon treatment withdrawal. This is not a failure of potency but of target: the tissue-encoded immune memory that sustains site-specific relapse remains largely inaccessible to systemic cytokine blockade. This perspective proposes a design-first framework for skin-targeted RNA nanomedicines that translates this biological insight into concrete engineering requirements. Five immune nodes, tissue-resident memory T cells (TRM), regulatory T cells, dendritic cells, stromal-

Stromal keratophakia was first introduced by Jose Ignacio Barraquer in the 1960s as a refractive procedure involving the implantation of a stromal lenticule into a lamellar keratectomy bed of a recipient cornea. By increasing central corneal thickness, the added lenticule induced steepening of the anterior corneal curvature, thereby increasing the refractive power. However, due to the technical limitations of the mechanical microkeratome and the use of cryolathed tissue, early clinical outcomes were often inconsistent and included risks of stromal necrosis, epithelial ingrowth, induced astigma

Repairing critical-sized bone defects is still difficult in clinical practice. Current strategies increasingly rely on bone tissue engineering to reconstruct defect sites while reducing donor-site injury associated with autografts and immunological concerns related to allografts. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) and parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) have been acknowledged for their ability to promote skeletal repair and bone production. However, systemic administration may result in limited drug accumulation within the defect area and may also cause unwanted systemic effects. In situ drug d

Adipose-derived stem/stromal cells (ASCs) are promising candidates for bone tissue engineering due to their abundance, accessibility, and osteogenic differentiation capacity. However, substantial inter-donor variability limits their standardized clinical application. This study investigated whether metabolic characteristics and donor-related parameters are associated with ASC osteogenic differentiation potential. ASCs were isolated from human subcutaneous adipose tissue (n = 26) and cultured under osteogenic conditions. Cell viability was evaluated at days 2 and 14, including cell proliferatio

Gynecological infections and implant-related complications, such as bacterial vaginosis (BV), pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and endometritis, are exacerbated by biofilm-forming pathogens such as G. vaginalis, E. coli, and S. aureus, posing significant clinical challenges worldwide. These biofilms, resistant to antibiotics, contribute to chronic infections and device failures in gynecological implants. Rising antibiotic resistance underscores the need for innovative biomaterials. Chitosan, hyaluronic acid (HA) and alginate are three representative natural polysaccharides, showing broad app

We developed electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) membranes containing 1-5 wt % ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), the surface of which was plasma-functionalized with carboxyl groups for covalent immobilization of chlorhexidine (CHX) via carbodiimide chemistry. Quantum-chemical analysis revealed that carboxyl functionalization, followed by 1-ethyl-3-(3-(dimethylamino)propyl)carbodiimide (EDC) activation, significantly enhanced CHX sorption, while ZnO NPs promoted charge transfer and increased the electrophilicity of the PCL matrix. The PCL-3%ZnO-CHX membranes exhibited high tensile strength (18.6 MPa), im

Rationale: Spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to limited regenerative capacity and severe energy deficiency in the injury microenvironment. This study aimed to develop a biomimetic piezoelectric hydrogel system that could recapitulate the native tissue microenvironment while enabling wireless physical regulation for SCI repair. Methods: A piezoelectric hydrogel was fabricated by integrating K0.5Na0.5NbO3 (KNN) nanoparticles with porous decellularized spinal cord matrix gel (pDG). The hydrogel's effects on vascular endothelial cell migration, neural stem cell differentiation, and ATP synthesis were

Acute Compartment Syndrome (ACS) is a serious medical condition that arises from increased pressure within osteofascial compartments, leading to impaired blood flow and potential tissue damage. Early and accurate diagnosis is critical for preventing permanent damage. Current methods rely largely on qualitative assessments with limited accuracy, and those that exploit invasive pressure measurements often prove inadequate. Herein, a soft materials-based multimodal sensor probe is introduced, as well as the mechanical and thermal influences to monitor intra-compartmental pressure, tissue oxygen s

The advancement of tissue engineering and the development of novel biomaterials have opened new possibilities for the effective treatment of patients with edentulism and other dental deficiencies, as well as for the prosthetic reconstruction and functional rehabilitation of the stomatognathic system. Bone substitute materials are now widely used in orthopedics, reconstructive surgery, and dentistry to support the regeneration of bone tissue lost due to trauma, inflammation, or tooth extraction. However, surgical procedures within the oral cavity inherently carry a risk of postoperative infecti
