Comparative morphogenesis of mouse and rat mandibular first molars (M1): a review of developmental timing, structure, and signaling pathways.

Rodents have been studied widely to evaluate the cellular and molecular mechanism of tooth development, although significant differences exist between them that impact how the researchers design their experiment. The mandibular first molar M1 is the most studied tooth in both species and provides a model for crown morphogenesis, root initiation, periodontal ligament organization, and the tooth eruption. In mice the M1 development is rapid, the crown complete at birth and the tooth eruption postnatal P20-21, while in rats the tooth development events are delayed, with larger tooth germs and too

Survival of a Maxillary Incisor in an Adolescent Female Patient 10 Years After Delayed Replantation.

One type of traumatic injury to which young people especially are vulnerable is tooth avulsion, which may occur as a result of sports activities, automobile accidents, or other mishaps. This article describes a case of a 17-year-old female who suffered an avulsion of her maxillary right central incisor due to an incident in which she fell out of a motor vehicle and onto the pavement. The tooth was recovered by friends, who transported her and the avulsed tooth to a local emergency room. One of the patient's friends achieved replantation of the tooth later that night after leaving the emergency

Treatment of inflammatory internal root resorption with mineral trioxide aggregate: a case report.

AIM: To report the treatment and follow-up of a maxillary central incisor with internal resorption managed by root canal treatment, white mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) repair and a fibre-glass post for reinforcement. SUMMARY: This study presents a case of extensive internal root resorption affecting tooth 11 (FDI) in a 28-year-old male patient, with a history of trauma in that region. The substantial loss of tooth structure, including cementum, and a perforation with lateral periodontal communication were complicating factors. Despite a guarded prognosis but encouraged by a healthy periodo

Width/length ratios of normal clinical crowns of the maxillary anterior dentition in man.

The purpose of this investigation was to analyze the clinical crown of the 3 tooth groups of the maxillary anterior sextant of the permanent dentition of normal subjects with respect to (i) width, length and the width/length ratios and (ii) determine if there is a correlation between tooth dimensions or tooth group ratios and subject height. Subjects (> or = 20 y.o.) were recruited for this study if (i) the free gingival margin on the facial surface of teeth in the maxillary sextant was positioned apical to the cervical bulge, (ii) there was no evidence of attachment loss; as determined by lac

Abnormal enamel and pulp dimensions in familial dysautonomia.

In familial dysautonomia (FD), a hereditary autonomic and sensory neuropathy, somatic growth is impaired. This study was conducted to explore the possibility that tooth dimensions are altered as a consequence of neural crest dysfunction known to be present in FD. Enamel, dentin, pulp, and tooth size measurements of mandibular primary and permanent molars from FD patients were compared with those of healthy controls. It was found that although tooth size in the FD patients was smaller than normal, the enamel was thicker on the occlusal table, while the pulp chamber was smaller and disproportion

The rarest cause of impaction of mandibular third molar - A case report.

Mandibular tooth impaction is a very common finding and is usually associated with so many local and systemic causes in which the pathway of tooth eruption is obstructed or misdirected. The local causes are either a local bony lesion or an abnormal position of the adjacent tooth. The case presented here is associated with a very rare cause of impaction, which is the hamartomatus growth of the first and second molars causing the obstruction and leading to the impaction of the adjacent third molar tooth.

Dental injuries in paediatric mandibular fracture patients.

PURPOSE: Dental injuries (DIs) are associated with facial fractures, particularly mandibular fractures. As paediatric mandibular fractures have special features, we sought to clarify the occurrence and types of DIs among this patient group. We assessed how age, injury type, and fracture location affects the occurrence of DIs and thereby defined which patients are most susceptible. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients < 18 years with a recent mandibular fracture. Predictor variables were gender, age group, mechanism of injury, type of mandibular fracture, and other associated fa

Clinical Course and Treatment of a Triplication Defect: A Case Report.

Fusion is an anomaly manifested in both deciduous and permanent dentitions. Fusion of dental tissues in the primary dentition is of clinical significance owing to the challenges in treatment of the affected teeth and aberrations encountered in development and eruption of their successors. Triple tooth refers to the union of three separate tooth entities. It can occur by fusion, germination, concrescence or a combination of both fusion and germination. Triplication is rarely encountered in the deciduous dentition. The case presented herein describes triplication of deciduous incisors and a supe

Autotransplantation combined with orthodontic treatment: a case involving the maxillary central incisors with root resorption after traumatic injury.

Traumatic dental injury can result in avulsion of anterior teeth. In young patients, it is a challenge to the dental professional because after replantation, late complications such as ankylosis require tooth extraction. Although prosthetic and orthodontic treatment, and implant placement have been described as the options for intervention, autogenous tooth transplantation could be an effective procedure in growing patients if there is a suitable donor tooth available. This case presents the treatment of a patient who suffered a traumatic injury at 9 years old with avulsion of tooth 21, which

Endodontic treatment of complicated traumatic deciduous teeth damage--a case report.

The 11-year-old boy was diagnosed with severe external root resorption of the tooth 11 and chronic exacerbated apical periodontitis of the tooth 12. Additionally, the tooth 12 showed signs of dilaceration. The history revealed that at the age of 5, the boy had dislocated his maxillary deciduous incisors with impaction to the tissues. The root canal treatment of the teeth 11 and 12 was performed with the application ofBiopulp, Jodoform, and Metronidazole paste to the canal. The dressings were changed every 4 weeks for 6 months. The root canals of both teeth were filled with the Resilon Epiphany

The use of an existing cast post and core as an anchor for extrusive movement.

PURPOSE: This article describes an original solution for a tooth with an existing cast post and core placed subgingivally. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The tooth was erupted rapidly using a simplified and easy technique that incorporates fiberotomy during the process of movement. RESULTS: The distal finish line of the core, which was subgingival before movement onset, was elevated, allowing the placement of crown margins on sound tooth structure. Clinical evaluation of the tooth after a period of 4 weeks, during which a provisional acrylic resin crown was used for retention, showed no need for cor

Biomechanical performance of an immature maxillary central incisor after revitalization: a finite element analysis.

AIM: To investigate the stress distribution in an immature maxillary incisor and the same tooth after simulated revitalization with deposition of tubular dentine or cementum by finite element analysis (FEA). METHODOLOGY: A finite element model of a maxillary central incisor was developed on the basis of a µCT scan. The tooth was segmented in two parts: a part that represented a tooth in an immature state and an apical part that represented the tissue formed after revitalization. The apical part was given the mechanical properties of dentine or cementum. The immature tooth and the same tooth r

Spontaneous healing of complicated crown-root fractures in children: Two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Complicated crown-root fracture is considered a severe dental trauma and is unlikely to heal without treatment. Usually, dentists have to remove the loose coronal fragment of the fractured tooth and treat the remaining part with multidisciplinary approaches. However, we observed spontaneous healing of fracture in two pediatric cases with a history of complicated crown-root fractures over 4 years ago. CASE SUMMARY: In case 1, a 12-year-old boy complained of pain at tooth 11 following an accidental fall 1 d ago. Clinical examination showed a crack line on the crown of tooth 11. Cone

Distribution of actin bundles in periodontal ligament of rat lower incisor.

The overall distribution of actin bundles in fibroblasts in the periodontal ligament (PDL) was examined in continuously growing incisors of the rat by confocal laser and thin-section electron microscopy to better understand the functional roles of PDL in mechanical support of the tooth and the mechanism of tooth eruption. The PDL around the incisor was divided mainly into two parts: the superior (non-enamel side of the tooth) and inferior (enamel side) parts. In the superior part, elongated fibroblasts ran obliquely near the alveolar bone and shifted direction nearly parallel to the tooth as t

Segmental repositioning combined with orthodontic fine adjustment of nonerupting permanent molars: a case report.

Eruption disturbance of a permanent tooth is challenging to clinicians. Eruption failure of a posterior tooth causes lateral open bite that severely interrupts function. This case report describes the treatment of nonerupting permanent molars by segmental repositioning followed by orthodontic fine adjustment. Two nonerupting permanent molars at different eruption stages were repositioned with a one- or two-step single-tooth segmental osteotomy technique. Final location of the repositioned tooth-alveolar bone segment was adjusted via orthodontic means.

Dental Follicle Cells: Roles in Development and Beyond.

Dental follicle cells (DFCs) are a group of mesenchymal progenitor cells surrounding the tooth germ, responsible for cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone formation in tooth development. Cascades of signaling pathways and transcriptional factors in DFCs are involved in directing tooth eruption and tooth root morphogenesis. Substantial researches have been made to decipher multiple aspects of DFCs, including multilineage differentiation, senescence, and immunomodulatory ability. DFCs were proved to be multipotent progenitors with decent amplification, immunosuppressed and acquisitio
