Indoor Spatial Updating with Reduced Visual Information.

PURPOSE: Spatial updating refers to the ability to keep track of position and orientation while moving through an environment. People with impaired vision may be less accurate in spatial updating with adverse consequences for indoor navigation. In this study, we asked how artificial restrictions on visual acuity and field size affect spatial updating, and also judgments of the size of rooms. METHODS: Normally sighted young adults were tested with artificial restriction of acuity in Mild Blur (Snellen 20/135) and Severe Blur (Snellen 20/900) conditions, and a Narrow Field (8°) condition. The s

Head-Mounted Display-Based Microscopic Imaging System with Customizable Field Size and Viewpoint.

In recent years, the use of microinjections has increased in life science and biotechnology fields; specific examples include artificial insemination and gene manipulation. Microinjections are mainly performed based on visual information; thus, the operator needs high-level skill because of the narrowness of the visual field. Additionally, microinjections are performed as the operator views a microscopic image on a display; the position of the display requires the operator to maintain an awkward posture throughout the procedure. In this study, we developed a microscopic image display apparatus

Whole field laser Doppler imaging of the microcirculation in psoriasis and clinically unaffected skin.

BACKGROUND: Angiogenesis represents a key phenomenon in psoriasis. Insights in the microcirculation within psoriatic lesions in a whole field are lacking. Recently, the Twente Optical Perfusion Camera (TOPCam) was developed, which provides the possibility of evaluating the superficial cutaneous microcirculation in a whole field. OBJECTIVES: This pilot study aims to examine whether the TOPCam can be used to visualize the microcirculation within and around psoriatic lesions, and whether it is capable of revealing vascular changes during topical treatment. METHODS: Five patients with chronic pl

Manipulating visual perspective for obsessional imagery and its impact on obsessive-compulsive symptoms in an analogue sample.

Visual perspective may have an important role in the phenomenology of intrusive images relevant to psychological disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The aim of the current study was to examine the subjective and behavioural effects of manipulating visual perspective, to either field or observer, on intrusive images related to doubting and contamination concerns. One hundred and twelve undergraduate participants with high levels OCD symptoms were asked to identify and imagine an intrusive image related to either doubting or contamination concerns. We then randomly assigned th

Effects of Intravitreal Anti-VEGF Therapy on Glaucoma-like Progression in Susceptible Eyes.

UNLABELLED: PRéCIS:: Intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injections may accelerate glaucomatous change in patients with preexisting glaucoma or ocular hypertension (OHT). The safety of long-term injections in this specific population may be reflected in the need for additional glaucoma interventions. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether repeated anti-VEGF injections accelerate structural and functional glaucomatous change in eyes with preexisting glaucoma or OHT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective, observational study of injected a

Mutation screening of the LRIT3, CABP4, and GPR179 genes in Chinese patients with Schubert-Bornschein congenital stationary night blindness.

BACKGROUND: Schubert-Bornschein congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) is a rare retinal disorder that may lead to severe visual impairment in patients. The aim of this study was to detect mutations in the LRIT3, CABP4, and GPR179 genes in Chinese patients with Schubert-Bornschein CSNB. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cohort of eight unrelated Chinese probands with Schubert-Bornschein CSNB was recruited for this study. Six of these probands were assessed in our previous study, in which we screened the NYX, CACNA1F, GRM6, and TRPM1 genes for mutations but identified none. The other two patients

Trial end points and natural history in patients with G11778A Leber hereditary optic neuropathy : preparation for gene therapy clinical trial.

IMPORTANCE Establishing the natural history of G11778A Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is important to determine the optimal end points to assess the safety and efficacy of a planned gene therapy trial. OBJECTIVE To use the results of the present natural history study of patients with G11778A LHON to plan a gene therapy clinical trial that will use allotopic expression by delivering a normal nuclear-encoded ND4 gene into the nuclei of retinal ganglion cells via an adeno-associated virus vector injected into the vitreous. Monocular temporal hemianopia with septo-optic dysplasia.

A 26-year-old woman displayed a monocular temporal hemianopic defect together with an ipsilateral afferent pupillary defect and bowtie optic nerve hypoplasia. MRI revealed a thin right optic nerve, an asymmetrically thinned chiasm, and an absent septum pellucidum. Monocular temporal visual field loss from organic lesions is quite rare but has been reported in conjunction with compressive lesions at the optic nerve-optic chiasm junction. This is the first report to demonstrate this visual field defect together with bowtie optic nerve hypoplasia.

Pattern electroretinogram and visually evoked cortical potentials in glaucoma.

Electroretinograms (P-ERG) and cortical potentials (P-VECP) evoked by checkerboard patterns were examined in patients with defects of the ganglion cell and nerve fiber layers due to glaucoma. Only a few patients exhibited a prolonged latency in the P-VECP, whereas in the P-ERG all patients with papillary and visual field defects revealed a significantly attenuated amplitude. Since there is a substantial fluctuation in the assessment of papillary excavation and visual field, the P-ERG offers a further means of evaluating and follow-up of retinal function in glaucoma patients.

2022 Prentice Award Lecture: Advancing Retinal Imaging and Visual Function in Patient Management and Disease Mechanisms.

Patient-based research plays a key role in probing basic visual mechanisms. Less-well recognized is the role of patient-based retinal imaging and visual function studies in elucidating disease mechanisms, which are accelerated by advances in imaging and function techniques and are most powerful when combined with the results from histology and animal models.A patient's visual complaints can be one key to patient management, but human data are also key to understanding disease mechanisms. Unfortunately, pathological changes can be difficult to detect. Before advanced retinal imaging, the measur

Attentional modulation of size perception in peripheral vision.

The perceived size of objects decreases with increasing eccentricity, a phenomenon known as the "size-eccentricity effect." This bias is thought to reflect cortical magnification: the overrepresentation of central vision relative to peripheral vision. Previous studies suggest that attention may influence this perceptual distortion, yet the specific contribution of endogenous attention remains debated. Here, we investigated whether endogenous attention attenuates or exacerbates the size-eccentricity effect. Ten healthy right-handed participants performed a size comparison task. On each trial, p

Diversity of Peripheral Refraction Patterns-Have These Been Oversimplified?

PURPOSE: To describe patterns of peripheral refraction based on spherical equivalent refraction and on tangential and sagittal refractions, and to assess the association of peripheral refraction patterns with different central refractions. METHODS: Peripheral refraction data from 737 individuals (14.7 ± 5.1 years old) were analyzed. Peripheral refraction was determined along the horizontal field at ±30° eccentricity using an open-field autorefractor in 89 hyperopes, 276 emmetropes, and 372 myopes. Values were converted into spherical equivalent refraction and into tangential and sagittal refr

Radiation effects on retinal layers revealed by OCT, OCT-A, and perimetry as a function of dose and time from treatment.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become a key method for diagnosing and staging radiation retinopathy, based mainly on the presence of fluid in the central macula. A robust retinal layer segmentation method is required for identification of the specific layers involved in radiation-induced pathology in individual eyes over time, in order to determine damage driven by radiation injury to the microvessels and to the inner retinal neurons. Here, we utilized OCT, OCT-angiography, visual field testing, and patient-specific dosimetry models to analyze abnormal retinal layer thickening and thin

Case Report: An Unusual Presentation of Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy.

SIGNIFICANCE: Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is often associated with onset in the young, adult male demographic. This case report serves as a reminder that it can affect both sexes with onset into middle age. PURPOSE: Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy is a maternally inherited mitochondrial disorder that typically affects men during young adulthood. It presents with a rapid, yet painless loss of vision, with the fellow eye often affected within a few months. The optic neuropathy causes a dense central scotoma with visual acuities reduced to less than 20/400. CASE REPORT: A 60-

Benign optic nerve gliomas in an adult: A case report.

RATIONALE: Benign optic nerve gliomas were rarely found in adults, and total resection of these lesions seems impossible. We aimed to share a rare clinical case with an unusual and instructive treatment process. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 52-year-old woman complained of a 4-month history of visual disturbance. Automated perimetry revealed visual field defect in her both eyes. DIAGNOSIS: This patient was diagnosed with optic nerve glioma. We found its pathological features consistent with the pilocytic astrocytomas (WHO grade I). INTERVENTIONS: A total resection of the tumor was smoothly performed.
