[A case of pericardial diverticulum with changing size].

A 39 year-old woman with a tumor shadow in the right upper mediastinum noticed by chest x-ray examination of mass survey was presented. Chest x-ray films taken 5 times in a month in a same position showed the mass further changed in size. This result indicates the communication between the mass and pericardial cavity. Surgical extirpation was carried out and diagnosed a pericardial diverticulum.

Distal Renal Tubular Acidosis: A Conundrum of Short Stature, Failure to Thrive, Rickets, and Nephrocalcinosis.

Distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) is an uncommon disorder marked by defective hydrogen ion excretion in the distal nephron, leading to hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis, persistently alkaline urine, and hypokalemia. Chronic, untreated dRTA in children often presents with growth failure, refractory rickets, and nephrocalcinosis, yet is frequently misdiagnosed. We report a 13-year-old girl with severe stunting, bone pain, proximal muscle weakness, and polyuria for several years. Examination revealed significant short stature, malnutrition, widened wrists, a protuberant abdomen, and genu valgu

Correlation between neurologic status and spinal injury at the Cervicothoracic Junction.

BACKGROUND: With limited studies on spinal injuries occurring at the cervicothoracic junction, there is currently a knowledge gap regarding the correlation between morphology of injury and neurology and whether surgery provides a favorable neurological outcome. The primary objective was to determine whether the neurological deficit correlated with the severity of injury at this region of the spine. METHODS: All patients with injuries at the cervicothoracic junction from December 2015 to December 2020 in a government trauma hospital were included. Patient demographics, characteristics of the i

Childhood Respiratory Conditions: Lower Respiratory Tract Infection.

Bronchiolitis, a lower respiratory tract infection, commonly affects infants and children younger than 2 years. Respiratory syncytial virus is the most common cause. Nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, and mild fever occur in the first 1 to 3 days. Symptoms worsen for several days to include wheezing and other lower respiratory tract signs, and then resolve over days to weeks. However, some children develop hypoxemia and/or respiratory distress and require hospitalization. The diagnosis is clinical, based on the history and physical examination findings. Routine chest x-rays and blood tests are not

Temporary standalone percutaneous fixation with pedicle screws for the treatment of subacute tuberculous osteomyelitis with kyphotic deformity in the lumbar spine.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculous (TB) osteomyelitis is a rare, but challenging infection, that mandates antituberculosis antibiotics, and potentially surgical intervention. Per the Gulhane Askeri Tip Akademisi (GATA) classification system, corrective reconstruction is indicated in severe cases, where the kyphotic deformity is >20° (GATA Class III). Here, we describe a case of BCG vaccine-induced lumbar TB osteomyelitis at the L1-2 level in a patient presenting with mechanical pain and a focal, nonfixed kyphotic deformity of 36.1°. Surgery consisted of percutaneous fixation with pedicle screws without d

Annular ligament repair using allograft for the treatment of chronic radial head dislocation: a case report.

The annular ligament has a crucial role in the radial head stability and  it is critical to the proper functioning of the proximal  radio-capitellar joint. Its chronic injury may lead to radial head instability, elbow pain with decrease in motion and valgus deformity. Method: We present the case of a 53-year-old heavy laborer who reported a complex trauma of the right upper limb with a Floating Elbow Injury, associated to an open Monteggia fracture-dislocation. One month later, despite the definitive fixation with plates of  both the forearm and the supracondylar fractures, X-rays showed the p

Bilateral Subcapital Femoral Neck Fracture in a 28 Year Old Postpartum Woman.

INTRODUCTION: Subcapital femoral neck fractures are associated with high morbidity and mortality. These fractures mostly occur as a result of a high-force impact from traffic accidents and a fall from a great height, though non-traumatic forms are described in transient osteoporosis during the second half of pregnancy, in convulsions during electric shock, eclampsia, hypocalcemia, osteomalacia, renal osteodystrophy and myeloma. CASE REPORT: In this report we present a bilateral subcapital femoral neck fracture in a woman sustained two days after delivery. The right hip fracture was treated wi

[Cytogenetic damage to the corneal epithelium of mice due to the in vivo exposure to ionizing radiation with different levels of linear energy transfer].

Damages to corneal epithelium cells were studied in mice irradiated by protons with the energies of 10, 25, 50 and 645 MeV, 60Co γ-quanta and accelerated ions of boron, carbon and neon with the energies of 7.5; 2.5 and 6.0 MeV/nucleon, respectively. X-rays (180 keV) were used as a standard radiation. Animals were exposed to a single dose in the range from 25 to 760 cGy. The mitotic index and aberrant mitoses were counted in corneal preparations in 24 hrs after irradiation. No matter the type of radiation, the mitotic index had an inverse dose dependence, i.e. the higher the dose, the lower the
