A high-molecular-weight surface component (F-1 fraction) has been isolated from the four serogroups of Legionella pneumophila. Antibody raised against live organisms was found by microagglutination assay to be specific for the homologous serogroup. Agglutinating activity of antiserum was markedly diminished after absorption with the homologous, but not heterologous, F-1 fraction. The effects of long-term feeding of an adequate diet on the progressive changes in the biochemical parameters including gastrointestinal functions in children suffering from marasmus and kwashiorkor are presented. In both groups fasting bloos sugar, blood urea nitrogen, hemoglobin, serum total proteins and albumin at admission were significantly lower than in matched controls. Mg deficiency was produced in rats by feeding a Mg-free diet. Ten days of dietary Mg depletion led to an increase in active duodenal Ca absorption in sham-operated animals, but this increase was abolished by thyroparathyroidectomy (TPTX).
