Childhood experience, interpersonal development, and reproductive strategy: and evolutionary theory of socialization.

The concept of "reproductive strategy" drawn from the field of behavioral ecology is applied to the study of childhood experience and interpersonal development in order to develop an evolutionary theory of socialization. The theory is presented in terms of 2 divergent development pathways considered to promote reproductive success in the contexts in which they have arisen. One is characterized, in childhood, by a stressful rearing environment and the development of insecure attachments to parents and subsequent behavior problems; in adolescence by early pubertal development and precocious sexu

Fetal alcohol syndrome in adolescents and adults.

Fetal alcohol syndrome is a specific recognizable pattern of malformation. Manifestations in 61 adolescents and adults suffering from alcohol teratogenesis are presented. After puberty, the faces of patients with fetal alcohol syndrome or fetal alcohol effects were not as distinctive. Patients tended to remain short and microcephalic, although their weight was somewhat closer to the mean. The average IQ was 68, but the range of IQ scores widely varied. Average academic functioning was at the second- to fourth-grade levels, with arithmetic deficits most characteristic. Maladaptive behaviors suc

Annual Research Review: Early conduct problems - precursors, outcomes, and etiology.

During the toddler and preschool period, nearly all children engage in some level of aggression, defiance, stealing, and temper tantrums. While the frequency and intensity of these behaviors tends to decrease across early childhood, a subset of children engage in these conduct problem behaviors at a higher intensity early in life and/or do not desist from these behaviors. Instead, these behaviors escalate across childhood and adolescence into serious forms of antisocial behavior (e.g., aggression, rule breaking). Given the negative impacts of these behaviors on children engaging in them, victi

Disrupted maternal behavior in morphine-dependent pregnant rats and anhedonia in their offspring.

It is currently estimated that every 15 minutes an infant is born with opioid use disorder and undergoes intense early life trauma due to opioid withdrawal. Clinical research on the long-term consequences of gestational opioid exposure reports increased rates of social, conduct, and emotional disorders in these children. Here, we investigate the impact of perinatal opioid exposure (POE) on behaviors associated with anhedonia and stress in male and female Sprague Dawley rats. Young adult female rats were administered morphine via programmable, subcutaneous micro-infusion pumps before, during, a

Adaptive and Behavioral Profiles in Down Syndrome and Co-Occurring Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Case-Control Study.

Down syndrome (DS) is the most frequent genetic cause of intellectual disability (ID). Individuals with DS exhibit an elevated risk of other neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The primary objective of this study was to explore the clinical characteristics of co-occurring ASD in children and adolescents with DS using a case-control approach. We compared the adaptive and behavioral profiles of a group of participants with both DS and ASD (ASD group) with a group of participants with DS-only matched by age, sex, and IQ (CON group). Participants in the ASD grou

Sexuality in Adults With ADHD: Results of an Online Survey.

Establishing a secure sexual identity is a major developmental goal of an individual's transition from childhood to adolescence and the years that follow. Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by the core symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, but also with emotional dysregulation, oppositional behaviors, or disorganization appearing early in life, can affect several areas of an individual's personal and social development, including sexual health. Yet, the scientific knowledge about the relationship between ADHD and sexual f

Behavioral health risks in perinatally HIV-exposed youth: co-occurrence of sexual and drug use behavior, mental health problems, and nonadherence to antiretroviral treatment.

In a sample of perinatally HIV-infected (PHIV+) and perinatally HIV-exposed, uninfected (PHEU) adolescents, we examined the co-occurrence of behavioral health risks including mental health problems, onset of sexual and drug use behaviors, and (in PHIV+ youth) nonadherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Participants, recruited from 2007 to 2010, included 349 youth, ages 10-16 years, enrolled in a cohort study examining the impact of HIV infection and ART. Measures of the above behavioral health risks were administered to participants and primary caregivers. Nearly half the participants met st

Feasibility and safety of transcranial direct current stimulation in the treatment of adolescent depression in a naturalistic inpatient setting: a double-blind randomized controlled trial.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has potential as a treatment for adult depression, but its effectiveness in adolescents remains unexplored. This study evaluated the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of tDCS in young in-patients with depression. In a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial, 34 adolescent in-patients (mean age 15.48 years) received ten sessions of either tDCS or sham stimulation over two weeks, alongside standard treatment. Depression severity, quality of life, emotional and behavioral issues, and executive functions were assessed before, immediately after

[Psychometric properties of a direct violence scale and its behavioral mediation].

BACKGROUND: The lack of valid instruments to assess direct violence (DV) limits the understanding of its impact on mental health, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use. OBJECTIVE: To validate an expanded DV subscale as an autonomous measure in Mexican adolescents and to examine its association with PTSD and abusive alcohol consumption (AAC) through a mediation model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A quantitative study with a mediation analysis approach was conducted in a sample of 3963 adolescents aged 14 to 19 from eleven Mexican cities. A subset of items from the DV fact

Mitigating Sports-Related Concussions in Adolescent Athletes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Communication and Education Interventions.

OBJECTIVES: Sports-related concussions (SRCs) in adolescents may pose severe health consequences, which underscores the importance of adequate prevention, early detection, and management. This systematic literature review and meta-analysis aims to synthesize findings from studies evaluating SRC communication and education interventions targeting adolescent athletes and/or their caregivers. METHODS: We included original, peer-reviewed studies published in English between 2014 and 2024. For studies reporting on comparable outcomes, we conducted a meta-analysis based on mean differences between

Diminished reinforcement sensitivity in adolescence is associated with enhanced response switching and reduced coding of choice probability in the medial frontal pole.

Precisely charting the maturation of core neurocognitive functions such as reinforcement learning (RL) and flexible adaptation to changing action-outcome contingencies is key for developmental neuroscience and adjacent fields like developmental psychiatry. However, research in this area is both sparse and conflicted, especially regarding potentially asymmetric development of learning for different motives (obtain wins vs avoid losses) and learning from valenced feedback (positive vs negative). In the current study, we investigated the development of RL from adolescence to adulthood, using a pr

Sexual Assault Victimization in Premature Female Mortalities: Evidence from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health.

Previous research has documented many behavioral problems associated with being a female victim of sexual assault, but little attention has been devoted to whether this experience might be related to premature mortalities. We investigated this utilizing the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health survey, collected from over 10,000 adolescent females in 1995, whose premature deaths (n = 65) were noted in 2007 in National Death Index records. Significant associations were found between females with a substance misuse history and their premature deaths, but not with being a sexu

Post-weaning social isolation increases the incentive value of nicotine-related contexts and decreases the accumulation of ΔFosB in nucleus accumbens in adolescent rats.

Adolescent social conditions profoundly affect vulnerability to drug abuse. Preclinical studies have shown that preventing social interactions during adolescence increases the rewarding effects of drugs like alcohol, cocaine, or amphetamines, however, little data exist regarding the impact of social isolation on nicotine effects. The current study evaluated the effects of differential rearing conditions during adolescence (isolation or group rearing) on (1) conditioned place preference induced by low nicotine doses (0.1 or 0.3 mg/kg) and (2) sensitization to the locomotor effects of nicotine a

Understanding the Psychological Impacts of Teenage Pregnancy through a Socio-ecological Framework and Life Course Approach.

The relationship between mental health and teenage pregnancy is complex. Mental health can be both an antecedent and contributing factor to teenage pregnancy and a concurrent factor wherein pregnancy itself can contribute to depression. Expectant and parenting teens (EPT) are faced with the simultaneous challenges of pregnancy and parenting while navigating the developmental tasks of adolescence which increases their risk for mental health problems. In addition, adolescents growing up in stressful community or home situations where their parents experienced depression, further places them and

Disruption of amygdala Tsc2 in adolescence leads to changed prelimbic cellular activity and generalized fear responses at adulthood in rats.

Adolescence constitutes a period of vulnerability in the emergence of fear-related disorders (FRD), as a massive reorganization occurs in the amygdala-prefrontal cortex network, critical to regulate fear behavior. Genetic and environmental factors during development may predispose to the emergence of FRD at the adult age, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. In the present study, we tested whether a partial knock-down of tuberous sclerosis complex 2 (Tsc2, Tuberin), a risk gene for neurodevelopmental disorders, in the basolateral amygdala (BLA) from adolescence could alter fear

Preoperative Evaluation in Children.

A preoperative evaluation is advised for all children and adolescents having elective surgery with anesthesia. The evaluation assesses medical and psychosocial factors that may affect surgery timing and identifies underlying conditions that may require evaluation or management before surgery. The evaluation also classifies the patient's American Society of Anesthesiologists' risk category. The history component of the evaluation should include a review of the patient's medical, behavioral, and social history; previous complications with surgery or anesthesia; a medication review; and a tobacco

[Treatment of disorders of emotion regulation in the Adolescents Center at the Central Intitute of Mental Health].

Severe disorders of emotion regulation, e.g. in the context of mental illnesses, such as borderline disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and complex posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), often begin in childhood and adolescence and influence the psychosocial development of those affected, often into adulthood. Professional treatment therefore often requires longer term planning, if possible from a single source. The sectorized structure of the current psychiatric healthcare system, however, makes this process more difficult or is even a hindrance and promotes high hospita

Active Parents-Active Children-A Study among Families with Children and Adolescents with Down Syndrome.

UNLABELLED: From a public health perspective, it is important that children with Down syndrome (DS) lay the foundations of physical activity (PA) early in life to keep active in school, as teenagers and as adults. The aims were to investigate PA patterns in children and adolescents with DS, as well as their parents' and siblings' PA patterns. METHODS: A survey was performed among 310 families with children with DS (54% boys and 46% girls) aged 8-18 years (mean 14.04, SD 3.18) in Sweden. Chi-squared tests and multiple logistic regression were carried out. RESULTS: Nineteen percent of children

Proposal for a short version of an international questionnaire to detect bullying: adaptation to Argentine Spanish language and exploratory factor analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Bullying encompasses intentional intimidation, abuse, and physical or psychological harassment behaviors by a student (bully) against another student (victim) repeatedly. It includes physical and verbal abuse, social exclusion, and cyberbullying. Victims miss school more often and have a higher risk for somatic symptoms, anxiety, depression, and suicide. Although the Adolescent Peer Relations Instrument (APRI) is a bullying screening questionnaire (19 items) validated in Spain in 2016, there was no validated instrument available in Argentina. OBJECTIVE: To obtain a short version
