Associations between problems with crying, sleeping and/or feeding in infancy and long-term behavioural outcomes in childhood: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Excessive crying, sleeping or feeding problems are found in approximately 20% of infants and may predict behavioural problems in childhood. METHODS: A quantitative meta-analysis of 22 longitudinal studies from 1987 to 2006 that statistically tested the association between infant regulatory problems and childhood internalising, externalising and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) problems was carried out; 1935 children with regulatory problems were tested. Cohen's d was used to express the association between regulatory problems and behavioural problems. Heterogeneity

Identifying racial disparities in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by recurrent epistaxis (nose bleeds), mucosal telangiectasias (spider veins), and arteriovenous malformations. Although HHT affects all racial groups, few studies have explored racial disparities among patients with HHT. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of HHT patients who were seen at a single academic center between July 1, 2014 and January 1, 2022. The primary outcomes of this study were the Epistaxis Severity Score (ESS) and the presence of pulmonary, cerebral, gas

Predicting cardiovascular risk from national administrative databases using a combined survival analysis and deep learning approach.

BACKGROUND: Machine learning-based risk prediction models may outperform traditional statistical models in large datasets with many variables, by identifying both novel predictors and the complex interactions between them. This study compared deep learning extensions of survival analysis models with Cox proportional hazards models for predicting cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in national health administrative datasets. METHODS: Using individual person linkage of administrative datasets, we constructed a cohort of all New Zealanders aged 30-74 who interacted with public health services duri

Postpromotional effects of dietary marine or safflower oils on large bowel or pulmonary implants of CT-26 in mice.

Marine oils containing n-3 fatty acids exhibit variable antineoplastic effects. Diets containing low (11.6% of kcal) or high (46.5% of kcal) levels of marine oils as the exclusive fat source were compared to diets containing identical amounts of safflower oil (n-6) in weanling, male BALB/c ByJ mice. All diets provided approximately 90 kcal/100 g body weight/day, and contained identical quantities of vitamins, minerals, protein, and fiber. The growth of transplantable colon carcinoma, CT-26, (10(6) cells/animal) implanted, subserosally, into the descending colon via laparotomy, was observed wee

Lateral habenula-rostromedial tegmental nucleus circuit mediates inflammatory pain in mice.

BACKGROUND: The monoamine system, particularly the serotonergic neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN), associated with the synthesis and release of 5-hydroxytryptamine, is crucial for regulating pain. The lateral habenula (LHb) modulates DRN neurons by acting through GABAergic neurons located in the rostromedial tegmental nucleus (RMTg). However, the role of RMTg in mediating the LHb and regulating pain remains unclear. Thus, we aimed to assess the role of the LHb-RMTg pathway in inflammatory pain. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice were used in the chemogenetic experiments, while male and female

Causal association between dietary habits and aortic dissection and aortic aneurysm: Mendelian randomization study.

Numerous studies have emphasized the health benefits of dietary habits, particularly concerning arterial diseases. Nevertheless, the relationship between dietary habits and the risk of aortic dissection and aortic aneurysm remains unclear globally. This study aims to explore potential causal relationships between dietary habits and these 2 types of aortic disease. We analyzed data from genome-wide association studies, which included 34 dietary habits from the Nicola Pirastu study and summary statistics from the FinnGen R11 database regarding aortic dissection and aortic aneurysm, to evaluate t

The role of social problem-solving in emerging adult healthcare transition.

OBJECTIVE: Transitioning to independent self-management is an observed challenge for emerging adults with chronic medical conditions (CMCs). Strong healthcare management skills are linked with better health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Social problem-solving skills also contribute to HRQoL, but limited research exists on the role of these skills among emerging adults with CMCs. Therefore, the current study examines the potential mediating role of problem-solving abilities between healthcare management skills and HRQoL among emerging adults with CMCs. METHODS: Emerging adults (N = 279; Mea

Extensive scintigraphic gastric motor function testing with concurrent symptom recording predicts prospectively measured daily dyspeptic symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Absent "organic" disease, dyspeptic symptoms may arise from abnormal gastric sensation, accommodation, motility or emptying (GE). Extensive gastric sensorimotor evaluation is rarely undertaken because testing is prolonged, invasive, poorly tolerated or unavailable. AIMS: To investigate whether gastric antral motor function, evaluated with scintigraphy, predicts GE. To explore whether motor testing with symptom recording predicts day-to-day symptoms in patients with dyspepsia. METHODS: GE was determined using a scintigraphic solid-meal protocol (296 kcal, 35% fat). Antral motility
