Heat-related emergencies constitute a major and growing public health challenge in the Gulf region due to extreme climatic conditions, rapid urbanization, and widespread occupational heat exposure. Rising ambient temperatures, high humidity, and recurrent heatwaves significantly increase the incidence of heat-related illnesses, particularly heat exhaustion and heatstroke, placing substantial strain on emergency healthcare services. This literature review aims to synthesize existing evidence on the epidemiology, environmental and occupational risk factors, pathophysiology, clinical presentation

INTRODUCTION: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease influenced by environmental factors. Double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) serves as an antigen in various autoimmune diseases and is affected by meteorological factors. However, the relationships among the circulating dsDNA level, RA inflammatory immune mechanisms, and seasonal meteorological factors remain unclear.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Serum dsDNA levels were measured in patients with RA and healthy controls, and correlations with archived data on seasonal meteorological changes were examined. Quantitative PCR was performed to a

West Nile virus is an arbovirus transmitted by infected Culex mosquitoes to birds, horses, and humans. Since its first recorded case in Germany in 2018, WNV has been endemic in several parts of Germany. Globalization, ecosystem modification and climate change have been identified as significant drivers of the arbovirus spread. However, vertical transmission of pathogens from adult female to their progeny might alter the transmission dynamics. In this study, we designed a process-based epidemic model incorporating climatic variables and epidemiological parameters that replicated mosquito popula

Climatic variation is inherently linked with tree phenology; however, phenological triggers depend on species and habitat. We analyzed key climatic factors for the onset of secondary growth for Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) at the southern limit of its distribution in Siberia. From direct observations of developing tree rings, seasonal curves of the number of cells in the cambial zone, in the cell-expansion zone, and the total number of xylem tracheids were developed over seven years with a wide variety in the phenological dates. We found that later and shorter intervals of these stages of

Rattus tanezumi (R. tanezumi) is a major amplifying host for plague and an important reservoir host for multiple zoonotic pathogens, including leptospirosis and hantavirus. Its population dynamics in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) Area of China are influenced by climate and reservoir-induced environmental changes, thereby impacting disease transmission risks. Based on rodent capture rate data collected using cage traps during night surveys in January, March, May, July, September, and November each year from 2015 to 2021, this study investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics of R. tanezumi and

This study examines the spatiotemporal dynamics and determinants of waterborne diseases (WBDs) in Algeria between 2000 and 2023, using annual epidemiological reports from the National Institute of Public Health. Five major diseases are analyzed: foodborne disease outbreaks (FBDOs), hepatitis A, dysentery, typhoid fever, and cholera. Descriptive statistics, temporal trend analysis, and age-stratified profiling are applied to identify epidemiological patterns and underlying determinants. Results indicate a significant epidemiological transition: Typhoid fever and dysentery declined by nearly 98%

This study elucidates the impact of vintage climatic variation on the interplay between stochastic and deterministic processes governing fungal community assembly during spontaneous fermentation of Cabernet Franc grapes and its consequential effects on wine flavor profiles. Employing high-throughput sequencing (fungal dynamics), HS-SPME-GC-MS (volatile metabolomics), Spearman correlation (fungi-flavorant relationships), and ecological null modeling (neutral vs. niche processes), the study tracked succession across vintages. Key findings revealed vintage-driven divergence: Cladosporium dominate

Today, approximately 7.2 million people have Alzheimer's disease in the United States. That number is expected to double by 2060 if a preventive approach is not undertaken. Globally, those figures are also predicted to increase. As we'll soon discover, air pollution and other aspects of climate change are a predominant cause of this remarkable surge. The purpose of this article is to examine the scientific basis of pollution and suggest that an evolutionary lifestyle medicine program may help mitigate and slow down its negative effects on brain health. This review examines existing literature

Marine invertebrates, such as oysters, were once thought to form large, panmictic populations with little genetic differentiation due to their high reproductive capacity and dual life stages. However, recent studies have shown significant genetic structuring and moderate gene flow across populations, influenced by factors like ocean currents, historical climate events, and environmental changes. The black-lip oyster (Saccostrea echinata), with its extensive dispersal potential, is ideal for population genetics studies. In current study, mitochondrial DNA (COI gene) was utilized to investigate

Leptospirosis poses a significant public health challenge in Thailand, driven by a complex mix of environmental and socioeconomic factors. This study develops an XGBoost machine learning model to predict leptospirosis outbreak risk at the provincial level in Thailand, integrating climatic, socioeconomic, and agricultural features. Using national surveillance data from 2007-2022, the model was trained to classify provinces as high or low risk based on the median incidence rate. The model's predictive performance was validated for the years 2018-2022, spanning pre-COVID-19, COVID-19, and post-CO

Estimating the cost to society from a ton of CO2-termed the social cost of carbon (SCC)-requires connecting a model of the climate system with a representation of the economic and social effects of changes in climate, and the aggregation of diverse, uncertain impacts across both time and space. A growing literature has examined the effect of fundamental structural elements of the models supporting SCC calculations. This work has accumulated in a piecemeal fashion, leaving their relative importance unclear. Here, we perform a comprehensive synthesis of the evidence on the SCC, combining 1,823 e

Air pollution, a global health hazard, significantly impacts mortality, cardiovascular health, mental well-being, and overall human health. This study aimed to investigate the impact of air pollution and meteorological factors on cardiovascular mortality rates in Mashhad City, northeastern Iran in 2017-2020. We utilized a Random Forest (RF) model in this study. We gathered daily meteorological data (pressure, humidity, temperature, solar radiation) from 2017 to 2020, pollutant levels (PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, CO), and cardiovascular mortality data from the Health System Registration (Sina). Climatic warming elevates mortality for many salmonid populations during their physically challenging up-river spawning migrations, yet, the mechanisms underlying the increased mortality remain elusive. One hypothesis posits that a cardiac oxygen insufficiency impairs the heart's capacity to pump sufficient oxygen to body tissues to sustain up-river swimming, especially in warm water when oxygen availability declines and cardiac and whole-animal oxygen demand increases. We tested this hypothesis by measuring cardiac and metabolic (cardiorespiratory) performance, and assessing the upper thermal

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease with a high burden in Latin America, including northeastern Argentina, where flooding events linked to El Niño are associated with leptospirosis outbreaks. The aim of this study was to evaluate the value of using hydrometeorological indicators to predict leptospirosis outbreaks in this region. We quantified the effects of El Niño, precipitation, and river height on leptospirosis risk in Santa Fe and Entre Ríos provinces between 2009 and 2020, using a Bayesian modelling framework. Based on several goodness of fit statistics, we selected candidate models using

Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) is the most commonly identified bacterial cause of pneumonia and the leading infectious cause of death in children under 5 years of age worldwide. Pneumococcal disease follows a seasonal pattern with increased incidence during winter. Pneumonia burden is also associated with poor air quality. Nasopharyngeal carriage of the bacterium is a pre-requisite of invasive disease. We aimed to determine if susceptibility to nasopharyngeal pneumococcal carriage varied by season and which environmental factors might explain such variation. We also evaluated the infl
