Protective Effect of Uric Acid on Rat Model of Irritable Bowel Syndrome Requires Brain-Gut Communication Through Vagal Cholinergic Pathways.

BACKGROUND: Uric acid (UA) is an endogenous antioxidant that protects against neuroinflammatory diseases. Although irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is considered a disorder of gut-brain interaction, the role of UA in IBS remains unclear. METHODS: An experimental rat model of IBS was induced using laser-induced shock waves (LISW) applied to the head. Hyperuricemia (HUA) was induced by intraperitoneal administration of inosine monophosphate and potassium oxonate. Visceral hypersensitivity was assessed by colorectal distension. Ileal mucosal permeability was measured using the Evans blue method. C

Single-cell transcriptomics reveals a complex cell-cell communication network driven by myofibroblast-derived collagen in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Fibroblasts are pivotal regulators of tumor development, progression, and therapeutic resistance in human malignancies. However, their functional diversity and cellular heterogeneity in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remain largely elusive. In the present study, we constructed a high-resolution single-cell transcriptomic atlas of the ESCC tumor microenvironment (TME) via single-cell RNA sequencing of 15 tissue specimens derived from 8 ESCC patients. A distinct collagen-synthesizing myofibroblast subpopulation, termed Fibro_myo_C1, was identified as a potentially important fibroblast

Single-Cell RNA Sequencing Combined with MEBOCOST Reveals Alveolar Macrophage-Mediated Immunometabolic Communication Mechanisms in Sepsis-Induced Acute Lung Injury.

Background: Sepsis-induced acute lung injury (SI-ALI) leads to high mortality in critically ill patients, and no specific targeted treatments are available. Current studies mainly characterize intercellular crosstalk via protein-ligand-receptor frameworks, while metabolite-derived immune signal transmission is largely unclarified. Alveolar macrophages are located at the alveolar barrier and may act as central metabolic coordinators to trigger neutrophil-mediated lung inflammation, yet the complete metabolite signaling network has not been systematically mapped. Methods: We integrated single-ce

Image transmission and video live-streaming in emergency medical communication centre: a narrative review of its feasability, use, and impact.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency Medical Communication Centres (EMCC) are responsible for assessing calls, providing pre-arrival instructions, and dispatching resources. Telephone-based triage is limited by the lack of visual information, which may lead to under-triage or over-triage. Telemedicine, including image transmission and video live-streaming has emerged as a complementary tool, but its actual impact in EMCC remains uncertain. We aimed to summarise the existing literature on the feasibility, use and impact of telemedicine using image transmission or video live-streaming in EMCCs. METHODS: We

Deaf-led Deaf Awareness Training in the Emergency Department: A Pre-Post Evaluation of Staff Knowledge, Confidence, and Communication Preparedness.

INTRODUCTION: Communication access is essential for safe emergency care, but D/deaf patients (D/deaf used here to include people identifying as culturally Deaf and those with audiological difference) frequently experience barriers that limit their ability to participate in decision-making. Emergency clinicians often lack formal training in Deaf cultural and linguistic needs, interpreter use, and visually accessible communication strategies. This study evaluated whether a brief deaf awareness training session could improve emergency department staff's self-rated knowledge and confidence in cari

Implementation of patient-reported outcome measures in oncology practice: a communication-centered qualitative study on patient and healthcare professional perspectives.

PURPOSE: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are increasingly used in oncology to support patient-centered care, yet their implementation in routine practice remains inconsistent. Using a communication-centered perspective which conceptualizes PROMs implementation as a process of meaning exchange between patients, clinicians, and implementation staff, this study examined PROMs implementation as a multi-stage process and explored how it unfolds in real-life oncology care, drawing on both patient and healthcare professional perspectives. METHODS: A qualitative interview study was conducte

Smelly communication between haemaphysalis longicornis and infected hosts with indolic odorants: A case from severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus.

OBJECTS: Vector ticks' perception of characteristic odors emitted by infected hosts is key to understand tick's foraging behavior for infected host and design odor-based control strategies for tick-borne diseases. METHODS: Laboratory mice knocked out for type I interferon (IFN) receptors (Ifnar-/-) were used to develop a simulated host by intraperitoneal infection with Bandavirus dabieense (SFTSV). Urine and fecal samples were collected 4 days post-infection and analyzed to detect differential volatile metabolites (DVMs) during infection. Next, the two salient odor cues among the SFTSV-induce

Brief communication: targeted serum proteomics in postpartum South African women living with and without HIV, correlations with anthropometry and adiposity.

Postpartum adiposity is associated with long-term risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), which may be influenced by HIV infection. We investigated cross-sectional correlations between postpartum adiposity measures, and circulating proteins linked to CVD in women living with and without HIV. Irrespective of HIV status, adiposity was positively correlated with fatty acid binding protein 4, leptin and galectin 9; and negatively correlated with insulin-like growth factor binding protein 2 and V-set immunoglobulin domain containing 2. The link between adiposity and CVD-linked circulating proteins un

Textual emotion recognition to improve real-time communication of disabled people in sustainable environments using an ensemble deep learning approach.

Social media platforms are prevalently used to express and share opinions on a wide range of topics, which has amplified interest in textual emotion detection. However, accurately detecting emotions in individuals, especially those with communication challenges, remains a complex task. Emotion analysis serves as a significant tool for assessing, monitoring, and interpreting a user's sentiments toward services or products. The emergence of deep learning (DL) has significantly advanced this field, allowing the development of more accurate and robust models. DL techniques, particularly neural net

A Family Systems Approach to Augmentative and Alternative Communication Service Delivery in the Inpatient Setting: Recommendations for Speech-Language Pathologists.

PURPOSE: Family-centered care is necessary to deliver high-quality health care services. It is especially critical that family members are included in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) service provision in the inpatient setting. AAC can be overwhelming to families and requires accommodations for it to effectively integrate into daily communicative interactions. Currently, there is minimal guidance for family-centered care by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) working with children with limited functional speech in the inpatient pediatric setting. The purpose of this clinical fo

"We Keep Each Other Safe": The Development and Implementation of a Harm Reduction Health Communication Campaign to Prevent Fentanyl Overdoses.

BackgroundFentanyl overdose deaths rose precipitously in the United States from 2015 to 2022, dramatically outpacing all other drugs. Within Texas, Travis County (Austin, Texas) has the highest fentanyl overdose death rate across the state, surpassing larger metro areas such as Houston and Dallas. Local research indicates that many users are aware of fentanyl in the drug supply, but few utilize harm reduction behaviors, indicating the need locally for improved messaging and education among people who use drugs (PWUD). As such, the local health department approached our team to develop a cultur

Overreliance on cultural doulas: the paradox of entrusting the communication and care of high-risk migrant women to cultural doulas.

BACKGROUND: It is widely recognized that migrant women from low-income countries are considered to be a group with increased obstetric challenges. To address these challenges, cultural doulas were introduced to provide continuous emotional and practical support during childbirth in Sweden. Leveraging their shared cultural background, language skills, and understanding, the idea behind these doulas was supposed to facilitate effective communication between the woman, her partner, and healthcare staff, with the assumption that this would lead to better maternity care for migrants. The aim of thi

The Impact of an Adaptive mHealth Intervention on Improving Patient-Provider Health Care Communication: Secondary Analysis of the DIAMANTE Trial.

BACKGROUND: Depression and diabetes are highly comorbid conditions and are significant causes of global disability, particularly among individuals with low income or those from racial or ethnic minority backgrounds. While digital interventions offer promise for managing these chronic conditions (such as via lifestyle modification), there is also emerging evidence suggesting that digital support may strengthen or complement existing health care relationships, particularly by improving patient perceptions of communication and connection with their health care providers. OBJECTIVE: This study ai
