Association of Survival With Adherence to the American Cancer Society Nutrition and Physical Activity Guidelines for Cancer Survivors After Colon Cancer Diagnosis: The CALGB 89803/Alliance Trial.

IMPORTANCE: The American Cancer Society Nutrition and Physical Activity Guidelines for Cancer Survivors (ACS guidelines) include maintaining (1) a healthy body weight; (2) physical activity; and (3) a diet that includes vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. It is not known whether patients with colon cancer who follow these guidelines have improved survival. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether a lifestyle consistent with the ACS guidelines is associated with improved survival rates after colon cancer. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective cohort study included 992 patients with stage

Role of caregiver-reported outcomes in identification of children with prenatal alcohol exposure during the first year of life.

BACKGROUND: Earlier identification of children with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) remains a challenge. The objective of this study was to identify neurobehavioral (NB) outcomes associated with PAE in infants. METHODS: This manuscript evaluates NB outcomes at 6.33±1.12 months of age in 93 infants (39 PAE and 54 No-PAE) recruited prospectively into the ENRICH cohort. PAE was assessed by prospective repeated TLFB interviews and a panel of ethanol biomarkers. NB outcomes were evaluated by the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID-III), Parenting Stress Index (PSI), Infant Behavior Questionn

Health literacy is associated with health behaviour and self-reported health: A large population-based study in individuals with cardiovascular disease.

Background Health literacy may constitute a modifiable determinant of health behaviour and affect cardiovascular disease prevention. This study investigates the associations between health literacy and health behaviour as well as health status. Design A cross-sectional study on a population-based sample of people with acute myocardial infarction, angina pectoris or stroke ( N = 3116). Methods Health literacy was assessed using two dimensions from the Health Literacy Questionnaire: 'understanding health information' and 'engaging with healthcare providers'. Health behaviour included physical ac

Differential therapeutic outcomes of community-based group interventions for women and children exposed to intimate partner violence.

Two community-based group therapies, emotion focused versus goal oriented, are compared among women exposed to intimate partner violence (n = 46) and their children ( n = 48) aged between 6 and 12 years. A series of repeated measures analyses are employed to evaluate the effects of time from baseline to postintervention following random assignment. Main and treatment effects for women provide support for the relative effectiveness in increasing quality of social support in the emotion-focused intervention and in the reduction of both family conflict and alcohol use for the goal-oriented interv

3-(4-Chloro-2-morpholin-4-yl-thiazol-5-yl)-8-(1-ethylpropyl)-2,6-dimethyl-imidazo[1,2-b]pyridazine: a novel brain-penetrant, orally available corticotropin-releasing factor receptor 1 antagonist with efficacy in animal models of alcoholism.

We describe a novel corticotropin-releasing factor receptor 1 (CRF1) antagonist with advantageous properties for clinical development, and its in vivo activity in preclinical alcoholism models. 3-(4-Chloro-2-morpholin-4-yl-thiazol-5-yl)-8-(1-ethylpropyl)-2,6-dimethyl-imidazo[1,2-b]pyridazine (MTIP) inhibited 125I-sauvagine binding to rat pituitary membranes and cloned human CRF1 with subnanomolar affinities, with no detectable activity at the CRF2 receptor or other common drug targets. After oral administration to rats, MTIP inhibited 125I-sauvagine binding to rat cerebellar membranes ex vivo

Population attributable risks of esophageal and gastric cancers.

BACKGROUND: Several risk factors have been identified for esophageal adenocarcinoma, gastric cardia adenocarcinoma, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and noncardia gastric adenocarcinoma, but no study has comprehensively examined their contributions to the cancer burden in the general population. Herein, we estimate the population attributable risks (PARs) for various risk factors observed in a multicenter population-based case-control study. METHODS: We calculated PARs by using 293 patients with esophageal adenocarcinoma, 261 with gastric cardia adenocarcinoma, 221 with esophageal squamous

Central 5-HT2B/2C and 5-HT3 receptor stimulation decreases salt intake in sodium-depleted rats.

In the present study, we investigated the participation of central 5-HT(2B/2C) and 5-HT(3) receptors in the salt intake induced by sodium depletion in Wistar male rats. Sodium depletion was produced by the administration of furosemide associated with a low salt diet. Third ventricle injections of mCPP, a 5-HT(2B/2C) agonist, at doses of 80, 160 and 240 nmol, promoted a dose-dependent reduction in salt intake in sodium-depleted rats. The inhibitory effect produced by central administration of mCPP was abolished by the central pretreatment with SDZ SER 082, a 5-HT(2B/2C) antagonist. Similar resu

Finite element and thermal analysis of porous Ti-6Al-4V Scaffold dental implant prosthetics with a dense central core an investigation of the influence of porosity size on implants.

Investigating the temperature effects of eating or drinking food and hot or cold liquids, as well as the temperature distribution of these materials on porous dental implant scaffolds and evaluating their thermal loads, is significant. In this article, hot and cold temperature cycles from -10 °C to +60 °C were applied on dental implants with different porosity percentages and dental prostheses for 20 to 30 s, and their effects on bone and tissue were evaluated. Also, the temperature distribution during heat transfer has been studied and predicted, and the temperature difference and heat flux b

Cooperation, Trust, and Antagonism: How Public Goods Are Promoted.

One of the most continually vexing problems in society is the variability with which citizens support endeavors that are designed to help a great number of people. In this article, we examine the twin roles of cooperative and antagonistic behavior in this variability. We find that each plays an important role, though their contributions are, understandably, at odds. It is this opposition that produces seeming unpredictability in citizen response to collective need. In fact, we suggest that careful consideration of the research allows one to often predict when efforts to provide a collectively

Association of healthy lifestyle index and antihypertensive medication use with blood pressure control among employees with hypertension in China based on a workplace-based multicomponent intervention program.

BACKGROUND: Both medication and non-medication therapies are effective approaches to control blood pressure (BP) in hypertension patients. However, the association of joint changes in antihypertensive medication use and healthy lifestyle index (HLI) with BP control among hypertension patients is seldom reported, which needs to provide more evidence by prospective intervention studies. We examined the association of antihypertensive medication use and HLI with BP control among employees with hypertension in China based on a workplace-based multicomponent intervention program. METHODS: Between

Alcohol consumption and associated factors among pregnant women at public health centers in Asella town, southeastern Ethiopia: a multicenter mixed-method cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption during pregnancy has demonstrated significant risks worldwide. It can cause fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and increase the risk for miscarriage and stillbirth. Alcohol consumption rates during pregnancy exhibit considerable variation worldwide, with sub-Saharan Africa seeing the highest incidence, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Ethiopia, surpassing the continental average. This indicates a critical need for further research and interventions, especially in areas such as Asella town, Ethiopia, where alcohol raw material production is

Analysis of the influencing factors and clinical related characteristics of pulmonary tuberculosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: In China, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among diabetic patients is estimated to be between 90%-95%. Additionally, China is among the 22 countries burdened by a high number of tuberculosis cases, with approximately 4.5 million individuals affected by active tuberculosis. Notably, T2DM poses a significant risk factor for the development of tuberculosis, as evidenced by the increased incidence of T2DM coexisting with pulmonary tuberculosis (T2DM-PTB), which has risen from 19.3% to 24.1%. It is evident that these two diseases are intricately interconnected and mutua

Predictors of Replacing Alcohol With Cannabis Among Adult Women.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use among women varies by age, with younger women more likely to binge drink and older women more often engaging in consistent, long-term consumption. Both groups face health risks, including chronic disease, mental health conditions, and sleep disturbance. Cannabis has been proposed as a harm reduction substitute for alcohol because of its lower risks of dependency and health harms. The aims of this study are (a) to identify differences between younger and older women regarding their choices to use cannabis products as a substitute for alcohol and (b) to explore multiple d

Southampton PRegnancy Intervention for the Next Generation (SPRING): protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The nutritional status and health of mothers influence the growth and development of infants during pregnancy and postnatal life. Interventions that focus on improving the nutritional status and lifestyle of mothers have the potential to optimise the development of the fetus as well as improve the health of mothers themselves. Improving the diets of women of childbearing age is likely to require complex interventions that are delivered in a socially and culturally appropriate context. In this study we aim to test the efficacy of two interventions: behaviour change (Healthy Conversa

The role of the community nurse in psoriatic comorbidities interventions.

Psoriasis is a chronic disease that affects more than the skin. It has an impact on every facet of an individual's life and is associated with numerous comorbidities, such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, psoriatic arthritis, metabolic syndrome, squamous cell carcinoma, lymphoma, depression, anxiety and other immune-related conditions, such as Crohn's disease. Obesity is inextricably linked with type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and cardiovascular disease. Hypertension and cardiovascular disease are precursors for myocardial infarction and stroke. Lifestyle choices, s

Pitx3 deficient mice as a genetic animal model of co-morbid depressive disorder and parkinsonism.

Approximately 40-50% of all patients with Parkinson׳s disease (PD) show symptoms and signs of depressive disorders, for which neither pathogenic understanding nor rational treatment are available. Using Pit3x-deficient mice, a model for selective nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurodegeneration, we tested depression-related behaviors and acute stress responses to better understand how a nigrostriatal dopaminergic deficit increases the prevalence of depressive disorders in PD patients. Pitx3-deficient mice showed decreased sucrose consumption and preference in the two-bottle free-choice test of anh
