Role of macrophage NLRP3 inflammasome activation in real-ambient particulate matter-induced abnormal hepatic glucose metabolism.

Evidence regarding the effects of particulate matter (PM) exposure on hepatic glucose metabolism and insulin resistance is limited, and its mechanisms remain unclear. Macrophages, as key regulators of the liver microenvironment, may mediate PM-induced metabolic processes. This study used an individually ventilated cage (IVC)-based real-ambient PM exposure system mouse model, co-cultured macrophages and hepatocytes, and NOD-like receptor protein 3 (Nlrp3)-knockdown model to investigate the impact of macrophages on hepatic insulin resistance (IR) and glucose metabolism under PM exposure. Our fin

Oxygen-dependent conformation change of hemoglobin modulates methylmercury binding.

Methylmercury is a highly toxic that accumulates through the food chain, posing significant health risk to humans, particularly via fish consumption. Methylmercury bioaccumulation in fish is regulated by the ingestion from the environment and food sources and subsequent transport and distribution inside the fish body, with studies lacking for the latter. Hemoglobin is considered one of the key proteins that bind and transport methylmercury in organisms. Due to the function of transporting oxygen, hemoglobin's conformation is closely linked to oxygen content. However, there is limited study on

A first run-of-river hydropower plant development in a permafrost-rich subarctic Canadian region: short-term fate of mercury and carbon.

A first run-of-river power plant built in Nunavik (QC, Canada) lies in a continuous permafrost zone, a substantial carbon (C) rich mercury (Hg) reservoir. Its impoundment could promote permafrost thaw and remobilize Hg and lead to the enhanced production of highly toxic methylmercury (MeHg). To elucidate how RORs can influence C and Hg dynamics and transformations in a subarctic landscape, soils, water and benthic invertebrates were sampled shortly before and after the flooding. Soil Hg concentrations were higher in the organic active layer than in frozen ground. Three months after river impou

Construction of an ion-imprinted ratiometric fluorescence sensor integrating zirconium-based metal-organic framework and carbon dots for sensitive detection of copper ion.

The pollution of Cu2+ has seriously endangered human health and water ecological environment. It is crucial to explore a rapid and sensitive fluorescence detection method for monitoring Cu2+. In present work, an ion-imprinted functionalized zirconium-based metal-organic framework (NH2-UiO-66@IIPs) was innovatively designed and prepared, and yellow fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) were fabricated with o-phenylenediamine and tetraphenylethylene via a hydrothermal method. The experimental results demonstrated that Cu2+ could quench the fluorescence intensity of NH2-UiO-66@IIPs, and the fluorescence

Photochemical formation process of ozone and spatiotemporally targeted control strategies along the transport pathways in the Pearl River Delta region.

Regional ozone (O3) pollution is currently a major challenge for urban agglomerations in China, including the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. Understanding the cross-city photochemical evolution of O3 is crucial for developing spatiotemporally targeted control strategies. In this study, three major transport pathways across cities in the PRD region were identified through multiyear airflow trajectory cluster analysis. A photochemical trajectory model (PTM) coupled with the near-explicit Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM) was employed to elucidate the photochemical processes along these pathways.

Carbon nitride supported copper catalyst activating peroxydisulfate for efficient paracetamol degradation.

The heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction with peroxydisulfate (PDS) is a highly promising technology for the degradation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). It does not require a light or heat source, has a broader pH applicability, and does not cause secondary pollution or catalyst loss. In this study, we synthesized a highly dispersed Cu-doped graphitic carbon nitride catalyst (Cu/C3N4). Catalyst characterization results confirmed that the main pore size ranged from 0 to 4 nm, and Cu(I) and Cu(II) were highly uniformly dispersed onto the graphitic carbon nitride matrix. The

Integrated in vitro and in vivo omics analyses reveal lipid homeostasis disruption induced by widely used antimicrobial agent zinc pyrithione.

Zinc Pyrithione (ZnPT), a widely used antimicrobial agent, has been increasingly detected in environmental matrices, however its toxicological effects remain insufficiently characterized. Here, we employed an integrated in vitro and in vivo approach to systematically evaluate the impact of ZnPT on lipid homeostasis at environmentally relevant concentrations. In vitro studies using HepG2 cells demonstrated ZnPT exposure significantly perturbed intracellular lipid balance. Nile Red staining revealed a dose-dependent decrease in neutral lipid content, detectable even at the lowest concentrations

Enhanced bamboo charcoal-based adsorbent for dichloromethane adsorption within a wide relative humidity: Adsorption performance, moisture resistance and mechanism analysis.

Dichloromethane (DCM) is widely used in industry and is one of the key components of industrial exhaust. The paramount challenge for bamboo charcoal (BC) as a common adsorbent is how to achieve high adsorption capacity at high humidity, especially for some chlorinated volatile organic compounds (Cl-VOCs). Herein, the adsorption capacity of BCNK2-800 (2:1:1 mass ratio of KOH, urea and BC, 800 °C pyrolysis), for DCM under dry conditions was 610.9 mg/g, which was the highest value reported in the literature. The adsorption ability still stayed at 87.6 % (535.2 mg/g) of that obtained under dry con

Brassica chinensis L. response to polypropylene microplastics via photosynthetic and antioxidant systems: A combined analysis of transcriptomic and metabolomic.

Soil currently stores an estimated 20 %-42 % of the world's plastics. Microplastics (MPs) released during plastics decomposition are readily adsorbed by the soil because of their small size, large specific surface area, and other characteristics, potentially generating ecological risks. Recent studies have demonstrated that polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs) in farm soils markedly alter plant growth and development. The present study combined transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis to clarify the defensive mechanism of Brassica chinensis L. to PP-MPs. PP-MPs notably decreased chlorophyll and

Development of Palygorskite-CaIn2S4 composite for rapid Cr(VI) reduction under visible light.

Using natural minerals to eliminate harmful Cr(VI) under sustainable sunshine has significant potential. Herein, Palygorskite nanorods were utilized as carriers for the in-situ synthesis of CaIn2S4 photocatalysts through a simple one-pot thermal process, enabling the efficient reduction of Cr(VI). With a Palygorskite to CaIn2S4 mass ratio of 5 %, the conversion rate of Cr(VI) reached 98 % after 60 min of visible-light exposure, with a remarkable reaction rate of 0.0633 min-1. The effective integration of CaIn2S4 with Palygorskite led to a more uniform dispersion of CaIn2S4, exposing more react

Surface modification of ferrous sulfide nanosheets for in-situ remediation of cadmium-contaminated groundwater.

Ferrous sulfide (FeS) nanomaterials exhibit promising remediation activities for heavy metals via adsorption, precipitation, reduction, etc. However, traditional chemical reduction or biosynthesis-prepared FeS nanomaterials tend to be agglomerated and oxidized easily, which reduces their reactivity, influence radius, and long-term performance for in-situ reaction zone technology to remediate contaminant plumes in a low permeability aquifer. Here, we proposed a one-step pyrolysis method to prepare scalable FeS nanosheets with carbon composites and ultrathin features. After modification with the

Response of abundant and rare microbial taxa to three iron-carbon composite amendments in metal-contaminated agricultural soil.

Traditional studies of microbial succession under iron-carbon composite (Fe-C) amendment application have focused on the entire microbial community, with limited attention to the responses and ecological roles of abundant or rare taxa. Herein, a 90-day microcosm incubation was conducted to investigate the effects of three Fe-C amendments, including Fe3O4-modified biochar (FeC-B), ferrihydrite-natural humic acid (FeC-N), and ferrihydrite-synthetic humic-like acid (FeC-S), on distribution patterns, assembly processes, and ecological functions of both abundant and rare subcommunities. Intramolecular internal electric field and activated n-π* electronic transition co-promoted photocatalysis activity of carbon nitride: Mechanism and toxicity evaluation.

Graphitic carbon nitride (CN) exhibits enormous potential in addressing the global energy crisis and environmental issues, while poor charge behavior and insufficient light harvesting capability significantly impede its practical applications. Herein, CN with strong internal electric field and activated n-π* electron transitions was synthesized through one-pot thermal copolymerization of urea and 4,4-Bis(diethylphosphonomethyl)biphenyl. The integrated donor-acceptor structure induces powerful internal electric field, enhancing exciton dissociation efficiency and accelerating charge carrier tra

Environmental-dose chlorpyrifos disrupts gut microbiota and microbial metabolite profiles: An indirect mechanism promoting breast tumor growth.

Chlorpyrifos (CPF), a persistent organic pollutant prevalent in the environment, has been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer through mechanisms that remain incompletely elucidated. Since microorganisms are more susceptible to CPF than animals, this study employed a 24-week exposure mouse model to investigate the impacts of environmental-dose CPF (2 and 20 μg/kg) on gut microbiota (GM), microbial metabolites, and breast tumor growth. Our findings revealed that chronic CPF exposure reduced bacterial α diversity with a significant proliferation of Clostridium and Alloprevotella wi

Antagonistic effects of selenium on methylmercury-induced toxicity through mitochondrial quality control and enhanced GSH synthesis in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Selenium (Se), an essential trace element, plays a critical role in protecting the toxicity of methylmercury (MeHg). However, its detoxification mechanism for alleviating MeHg-induced damage remains largely unexplored. This study focused on the antagonistic effects of Se supplementation on the toxic responses induced by MeHg pretreatment in Caenorhabditis elegans. Our results showed that following a 20 h pre-exposure to MeHg, 4 h exposure to Se effectively and rapidly antagonized the reproductive and neurological impairments induced by MeHg. Meanwhile, we found that the total Hg content decrea
