[The use of the visuo-motor reaction training device for the improvement of the coordination in the eye-hand system of the children and adolescents following the completion of the antineoplastic treatment of brain tumours].

UNLABELLED: The survivors among the children and adolescents with a brain tumour are likely to show evidence of the impairment of the most important cognitive functions, such as attention, visual-motor integration, and working memory, following the completion of the antineoplastic treatment. The basic characteristics of these functions compromised in the patients presenting with the most serious cognitive deficiency are the information processing rate and the time needed for carrying out any cognitive activity in the patients experiencing deficit of white matter in the brain. AIM: The objecti

Selective Visual Attention Towards Oneself and Associated State Body Satisfaction: an Eye-Tracking Study in Adolescents with Different Types of Eating Disorders.

The development of eating disorders is associated with a body-related attentional bias. Although eating disorders are especially prevalent in adolescence, so far, no study has analyzed gaze patterns and state body image in response to viewing one's own body in youth. To fill this gap, the present study aimed to examine a body-related attentional bias and state body satisfaction in adolescents with various forms of eating disorders. Girls with anorexia nervosa, restrictive type (AN-R; n = 30), anorexia nervosa, binge eating/purging type (AN-BP; n = 26), bulimia nervosa (BN; n = 22), clinical co

Ridge at the medial rectus muscle insertion: A new anatomical landmark.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Rectus muscle insertions are usually linear or slight curved with the anterior convexity. While operating squint surgeries, we found a presence of ridge-like structure at the medial rectus insertion. None of the other rectus muscle insertions had such structure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients undergoing squint surgery were included in the study. All the patients had negative forced duction test for all the gazes and had comitant strabismus. The patients underwent surgery through the fornix route. All the squint surgeries were primary. None of the patients undergoing resur

Visual blur and motion sickness in an optokinetic drum.

BACKGROUND: The most commonly cited hypotheses for motion sickness (MS) focus on inconsistent sensory inputs. Visual/vestibular conflicts may lead to MS, but visual input from retinal regions/neural pathways that are sensitive to motion might bear more weight in MS etiology. We hypothesized that inducing blurred vision in an optokinetic drum would attenuate the influence of foveal (parvocellular) input, but not peripheral (magnocellular) input that is sensitive to motion. Increased relative influence of peripheral visual input was predicted to subsequently lead to more visual/vestibular confli

Macular Diplopia.

Maculopathies affect point-to-point foveal correspondence causing diplopia. The effect that the maculopathies have on the interaction of central sensory fusion and peripheral fusion are different than the usual understanding of treatment for diplopia. This paper reviews the pathophysiology of macular diplopia, describes the binocular pathology causing the diplopia, discusses the clinical evaluation, and reviews the present treatments including some newer treatment techniques.

Influence of stimulus interval on the habituation of vestibulo-ocular reflex and sensation of rotation in humans.

Previous studies in cats revealed that vestibular habituation of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) only occurs when velocity steps are delivered during the secondary phase nystagmus, suggesting that the presence of anti-compensatory slow phases may trigger the habituation process. We verified this property in humans by comparing vestibular habituation of VOR and sensation of rotation when steps were delivered either immediately after the perception of self-rotation had stopped, which is shortly before the nystagmus reverses direction; or when steps were delivered 60s later, i.e. during the sec

Rett syndrome: basic features of visual processing-a pilot study of eye-tracking.

Consistently observed "strong eye gaze" has not been validated as a means of communication in girls with Rett syndrome, ubiquitously affected by apraxia, unable to reply either verbally or manually to questions during formal psychologic assessment. We examined nonverbal cognitive abilities and basic features of visual processing (visual discrimination attention/memory) by analyzing patterns of visual fixation in 44 girls with Rett syndrome, compared with typical control subjects. To determine features of visual fixation patterns, multiple pictures (with the location of the salient and presence

Rehabilitative techniques.

This chapter deals with neuro-ophthalmological diseases at different levels of the afferent visual pathways with special regard to visual field defects, their functional impact, and their rehabilitation. The nature of these impairments and their significance for activities of daily living can be quite varied; an exact assessment of the residual function is required to determine specific rehabilitation approaches. Rehabilitation aims to compensate for the visual deficits by means of specific training and visual aids. Visual field defects in the center cause reading disability. Preconditions for

Validating an efficient method to quantify motion sickness.

OBJECTIVE: Motion sickness (MS) can be a debilitating side effect associated with motion in real or virtual environments. We analyzed the effect of expectancy on MS and propose and validate a fast and simple MS measure. BACKGROUND: Several questionnaires measure MS before or after stimulus presentation, but no satisfactory tool has been established to quickly capture MS data during exposure. To fill this gap, we introduce the Fast MS Scale (FMS), a verbal rating scale ranging from zero (no sickness at all) to 20 (frank sickness). Also, little is known about the role of expectancy effects in M

Impaired access to manipulation features in Apraxia: evidence from eyetracking and semantic judgment tasks.

Apraxic patients are known for deficits in producing and comprehending skilled movements. Two experiments tested their implicit and explicit knowledge about manipulable objects in order to examine whether such deficits accompany impairment in the conceptual representation of manipulation features. An eyetracking method was used to test implicit knowledge (Experiment 1): participants viewed a visual display on a computer screen and touched the corresponding object in response to an auditory input. Manipulation relationship among objects was not task-relevant, and thus the assessment of manipula

Alternate day exotropia.

INTRODUCTION: Cyclic strabismus is a rare disorder in which manifest strabismus and controlled latent deviation (heterophoria) alternates on a regular pattern which is usually over a 48-hr period. During the "straight" period the patient has a fully controlled heterophoria for all distances, with very good fusion and stereopsis. During the "squinting" period the patient has a constant manifest strabismus for all distances, with no demonstrable fusion and stereopsis. METHOD: We describe 2 cases of alternate day exotropia. One patient requires strabismus surgery to obtain constant binocularity.

The "zoom lens" of focal attention in visual search: changes in aging and Alzheimer's disease.

Visual search for a target in an array of distractors relies upon flexible shifts between global and local modes of attentional processing. Visual search is slowed in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), in part due to an increase in the number and duration of eye fixations made en route to a target (Rösler et al., 2000). This phenomenon may represent a compensatory adaptation to a narrowing of the zone of focal attention, necessitating more shifts of gaze in order to attend to the global workspace. Eye fixations were analyzed in two regions of interest (ROIs, central fixation and periphera

Viewing behaviour of spider phobics and non-phobics in the presence of threat and safety stimuli.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether spider phobics and spider non-phobics differ in attending to threat and safety stimuli in close proximity, or spatially separated. METHOD: A sample group of 16 spider-phobic and 16 spider-non-phobic volunteers were drawn from a student population on the basis of their scores on Watts and Sharrock's Spider Phobia Questionnaire. Attention was assessed by way of participants' viewing behaviour using an ASL 501 head-mounted eye-tracking system. In a control condition, participants viewed a neutral stimulus (a TV video) in the absence of the threat stimulus. In two

A functional magnetic resonance imaging study of local/global processing with stimulus presentation in the peripheral visual hemifields.

When stimuli are presented in the left or right visual fields, hemispheric specialization for global and local processing in occipital areas is attenuated. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated how this attenuation is compensated for when information must cross the corpus callosum to reach the areas specialized for global and local processing. We presented hierarchically nested letters (e.g. a large E made of smaller E's) to the right or the left visual hemifield while subjects fixated centrally. In half the trials, subjects indicated whether the global aspect and in the

Implicit face perception in a patient with visual agnosia? Evidence from behavioural and eye-tracking analyses.

This paper investigates face perception in a visual agnosic and prosopagnosic patient (SB). Despite very extensive lesions of visual areas, SB remains capable of some visual processing [Brain 125 (2002) 58]. However, in everyday situations SB does not exhibit signs of specific face recognition. To investigate how SB may process faces, we tested two hypotheses. According to the 'spared module hypothesis,' SBs abilities come from spared modules of implicit face processing. According to the 'general strategy hypothesis,' SB may have developed some deliberate compensatory strategies. A two-session
