Modeling stigma, help-seeking attitudes, and intentions to seek behavioral healthcare in a clinical military sample.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between public and self-stigma of seeking behavioral health services, and help-seeking attitudes and intent in a sample of active duty military personnel currently being assessed for traumatic brain injuries in a military health center. Although it has been suggested that many military personnel in need of care do not seek services due to concerns with stigma it is not fully clear what role different types of stigma play in the process. METHOD: Using previously collected data from a clinical sample of 97 military personnel, we conducted path ana

Substance Use and Adverse Mental Health Disparities Between Heterosexual and Sexual Minority Service Members in the U.S. Military.

INTRODUCTION: Nationally representative studies have shown that lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults have higher levels of substance use than heterosexual adults. In the military, substance use is often associated with adverse mental health outcomes and is often comorbid with other mental health conditions and adverse or harmful behaviors. Few military studies to date have comprehensively examined the relationship between sexual orientation, mental health, and substance use. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from the 2018 Health-Related Behaviors Survey (n = 17,166) were used. Univariate and multivari

How does health communication on social media influence e-cigarette perception and use? A trend analysis from 2017 to 2020.

OBJECTIVE: E-cigarettes have achieved a high prevalence rapidly. While social media is among the most influential platforms for health communication, its impact on attitudes and behaviors of e-cigarettes and its changes over time remain underexplored. This study aims to address the gap. METHODS: Four years of data (2017-2020) were derived from the U.S. Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) (aged 18-64 years, n = 9,914). Initially, key variables were compared across years. Furthermore, guided by the health belief model, we employed a moderated mediation model to examine the influen

"I was 15 when I started doing drugs with my dad": Victimization, Social Determinants of Health, and Criminogenic Risk Among Women Opioid Intervention Court Participants.

The presence and severity of childhood and adult victimization increase the likelihood of substance use disorder (SUD), crimes, antisocial behaviors, arrests, convictions, and medical and psychiatric disorders among women more than men. These problems are compounded by the impact of social determinants of health (SDH) challenges, which include predisposition to the understudied, dramatic increase in opioid dependence among women. This study examined victimization, related SDH challenges, gender-based criminogenic risk factors for female participants, and public health opportunities to address

Association between mild traumatic brain injury, brain structure, and mental health outcomes in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Children that experience a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are at an increased risk of neural alterations that can deteriorate mental health. We test the hypothesis that mTBI is associated with psychopathology and that structural brain metrics (e.g., volume, area) meaningfully mediate the relation in an adolescent population. METHODS: We analyzed behavioral and brain MRI data from 11,876 children who participated in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. Mixed-effects models were used to examine the longitudinal association between mTBI and mental health outco

Impact of sleepiness and sleep deficiency on public health--utility of biomarkers.

Sleep disorders and sleep deficiency are important causes of adverse health effects and increased mortality in the United States and worldwide. Sleep deficiency can also result in myriad adverse behavioral consequences, including profound sleepiness, cognitive slowing, automatic behavior, attentional failures and performance degradation, errors, and accidents. It is important to recognize that sleepiness and sleep deficiency are not synonymous.

Multisystem complications of bulimia: a critical care case.

Bulimia is an eating disorder characterized by behaviors which can lead to very serious health problems. Behaviors such as binging and purging and abuse of emetics, diuretics, or laxatives can cause serious complications, sometimes of a critical nature. Nurses must maintain a high index of suspicion for this disorder and use skillful assessment and intervention to prevent the critical multisystem complications of bulimia.

Exploring pregnant women's perspectives on pre-pregnancy physical activity in Nebraska: A qualitative study.

Physical activity (PA) is important for a woman's health particularly before pregnancy, yet many remain inactive during this time despite its benefits for themselves and their child. This qualitative descriptive study explored pregnant women's experiences with pre-pregnancy PA and the factors influencing their engagement. Using convenience sampling, data were collected from women across Nebraska between December 2023 and February 2024 via Zoom interviews. Thematic analysis, guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), identified three key themes: (1) Behavioral attitudes - women recognized

The Role of Traditional and Religious Beliefs in HIV Testing and Prevention in Africa: A Scoping Review Protocol.

Human immunodeficiency virus remains a persistent public health challenge in Africa, with cultural and religious beliefs influencing testing and prevention behaviors. Understanding these influences is important for developing culturally appropriate interventions. This scoping review protocol outlines a plan to systematically map the existing literature on the impact of traditional and religious beliefs, and the roles of traditional and religious leaders, on HIV testing and prevention behaviors across African contexts. Following Arksey and O'Malley's framework, the review will progress through

Bedtime procrastination mediates the relation between anxiety and sleep problems.

The prevalence of sleep problems is high in primary care patients and in anxious individuals. This study assessed whether total sleep time and bedtime procrastination mediated the association between anxiety and sleep problems. We predicted higher anxiety would be negatively associated with total sleep time and positively associated with bedtime procrastination and sleep problems, and these variables would statistically mediate the association between anxiety and sleep problems. Participants were 308 adult primary care patients, predominantly female (non-Hispanic White = 158, Latinx = 111, mea

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy in the Digital Age: Presidential Address.

Our field has come a long way in establishing cognitive-behavioral therapy as the empirically supported treatment of choice for a wide range of mental and behavioral health problems. Nevertheless, most individuals with mental disorders do not receive any care at all, and those who do often have difficulty accessing care that is consistently high in quality. Addressing these issues is complex and costly and thus progress has been slow. We are entering an exciting stage in which emerging technologies might offer novel solutions to the treatment gap. This paper discusses a number of technology-en

Ontogeny of chick behavior: a tool for monitoring the growth and development of lesser adjutant storks.

We studied the behavioral development of seven lesser adjutant stork (Leptoptilos javanicus) chicks from hatching to fledging over three breeding seasons at the Bronx Zoo. We developed an ethogram and compared the rate at which behaviors appeared in relation to brood size, sex, and the conditions in which the chicks were raised by their parents. Although sample sizes were small, there seem to be sex-related differences in the rate at which behaviors develop, with females developing more rapidly than males. Larger clutch size may be associated with slower growth rate because the single male dev
