Risk factors for the development of food allergy.

Both genetic and environmental factors seem to predispose to the development of food allergy. A most notable factor is diet, particularly during infancy. Possible other factors include maternal diet during pregnancy and lactation, birth by cesarean section, exposure to tobacco smoke, multivitamin supplementation, and intake of antacids. It is important to identify and control such risk factors to reduce the development of food allergy.

Gender differences in immune competence during copper deficiency.

Restriction of copper intake during lactation and postlactation periods reduced T cells and increased interleukin-2 receptors in isolated splenocytes from male, but not female, rats. However, a reduced in vitro proliferative response to phytohemagglutin (PHA) was seen in both male and female Cu-deficient rats. These findings suggest that Cu deficiency may inhibit proliferation at a step between early activation and DNA synthesis.

The influence of barbiturates on cerebral metabolism in patients with borderline cerebrovascular reserve during intraoperative transient carotid occlusion.

Sixty patients with borderline or frank insufficiency of their cerebrovascular reserve undergoing carotid endarterectomy were given enough short acting barbiturates, during cross clamping of the internal carotid artery, to cause EEG burst suppression. Arterial and venous concentrations of lactate were measured in blood samples taken before, 30 min after occlusion of the artery and 10 min after reperfusion. The amount of lactate produced depended on the length of time of burst suppression; the shorter it lasted, the larger the amount of lactate produced. Only in patients with the shortest burst

alpha-Adrenergic stimulation of glycolysis and Na+, K+-transport in perfused rat liver.

Interactions between alpha-adrenergic-induced lactate production, respiration and K+ uptake of perfused rat livers were investigated. Inhibition of mitochondrial electron transport by cyanide had no effect on K+ uptake, decreased phenylephrine-induced lactate production by 60% and suppressed extra O2 consumption by more than 90%. Ouabain did not affect alpha-adrenergic-induced respiration but inhibited K+ uptake and extra lactate production. Effects of ouabain and K+-free medium on lactate production were additive and independent of cyanide, indicating that they were mediated by extramitochond

Effects of ruminal lipopolysaccharides on growth and fermentation end products of pure cultured bacteria.

Elevated levels of ruminal lipopolysaccharides (LPS) have been linked to ruminal acidosis; however, they result in reduced endotoxicity compared to LPS derived from species like Escherichia coli. Additionally, there is a knowledge gap on the potential effect of LPS derived from ruminal microbiome on ruminal bacteria species whose abundance is associated with ruminal acidosis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of LPS-free anaerobic water (CTRL), E. coli-LPS (E. COLI), ruminal-LPS (RUM), and a 1:1 mixture of E. coli and ruminal-LPS (MIX) on the growth characteristics and fe

Reproductive Stage and Modulation of Stress-Induced Tau Phosphorylation in Female Rats.

Chronic stress is implicated as a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative disorders. Although the specific mechanisms linking stress exposure and AD vulnerability have yet to be fully determined, our laboratory and others have shown that acute and repeated restraint stress in rodents leads to an increase in hippocampal tau phosphorylation (tau-P) and tau insolubility, a critical component of tau pathology in AD. Although tau phosphorylation induced by acute psychological stress is dependent on intact signaling through the type 1 corticotropin-releasing factor recep

Latent inflammatory activity is associated with alterations in iron bioavailability during early postpartum adaptation in dairy cows.

INTRODUCTION: The transition from late gestation to early lactation is accompanied by profound metabolic and immunological adaptations in dairy cows. While the relationship between inflammation and iron metabolism has been extensively studied in clinical diseases, less is known about how physiological or low-grade inflammatory processes influence iron bioavailability during early lactation. This study investigated associations between inflammatory activity and indicators of iron bioavailability in dairy cows during the early postpartum period, with particular emphasis on the use of a latent in

Does the choice of beef bull influence dairy cow survival in a beef × dairy system?

The increasing use of beef sires in dairy herds, largely enabled by reproductive technologies such as sexed semen, has created new dynamics in dairy production, including a surplus of replacement heifers. This has driven widespread adoption of beef × dairy breeding strategies to reduce the surplus of dairy heifers and increase meat output without compromising milk production. However, this practice introduces new challenges, particularly concerning dairy cow survival. A key concern is whether dairy cows inseminated with beef semen experience higher mortality, and if so, whether this can be add

Neonatal exposure to di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) through breastfeeding leads to dysfunction endocrine-metabolic outcomes in male rats at adulthood.

The increased production of industrial chemicals has led to greater human exposure to endocrine disruptors, such as diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP). This plasticizer, widely used in hygiene products, packaging, and medical devices, does not covalently bind to polymeric materials, which facilitates its migration and subsequent entry into the human body, primarily via the oral route. In this study, we investigated the effects of DEHP exposure during the lactation period within the framework of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) concept. The experimental model utilized Wistar f

Correlating the oral swab microbial community with milk production metrics in Holstein dairy cows.

Oral swabs of dairy cows have been suggested as a proxy for direct ruminal sampling, and this approach can identify the presence of up to 70% of the rumen microbial community. Here, we further extend the utility of this approach by correlating the bacterial community of swabs collected from 226 dairy cows on a research farm in Wisconsin, USA, with average milk yield and days in milk, two phenotypes previously associated with differences in the ruminal microbiome. We then obtained milk production efficiency data for a subset of these animals (gross feed efficiency [GFE] and residual feed intake

Effect of a low-protein diet during mid-to-late gestation on reproductive performance and serum amino acid profiles in sows.

Low-protein (LP) diets have been proposed as a strategy for animal production to conserve protein resources and reduce environmental nitrogen pollution. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a LP diet during gestation on the reproductive performance, serum amino acid concentrations, and nitrogen excretion in sows. A total of 24 healthy Landrace × Yorkshire sows (4 to 5 parities) with similar body weight and back fat were fed with normal gestational diet (control group, crude protein = 13.65%, n = 12) or a LP gestational diet (LP group, crude protein = 11.30%, n = 12) from day

Prevalence and risk factors for lameness in dairy cattle on selected farms located in Dessie and Kombolcha, Northeast Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Lameness in dairy cattle has continued to be a significant burden for farmers in modern dairy production due to its impact on animal welfare and productivity. A cross-sectional study was conducted from May 2022 to February 2023 to estimate the prevalence and identify associated risk factors of lameness in 433 dairy cows across 37 selected farms located in Dessie and Kombolcha, Northeast Ethiopia. METHODS: The selected animals were examined for lameness using a five-point visual locomotion scoring technique during daily outdoor access on a solid walking surface in the designated re

Endocrine changes during the peripartal period related to colostrogenesis in mammalian species.

This review discusses endocrine and functional changes during the transition from late gestation to lactation that are related to the production of colostrum in different mammalian species. Species covered in this article include ungulate species (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses), rodents (rat, mouse), rabbits, and carnivores (cats, dogs), as well as humans. An immediate availability of high quality colostrum for the newborn after birth is crucial in species where a transfer of immunoglobulins (Ig) does not or only partially occur via the placenta during pregnancy. Declining activity of ges

Severe body condition loss lowers hepatic output of IGF1 with adverse effects on the dominant follicle in dairy cows.

The severe loss of body condition score (BCS) during the early lactation period has been associated with infertility in cows. However, the mechanisms are not fully understood. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of BCS loss on liver health, and ovarian functions in cows during early lactation. Retrospectively multiparous cows from two farms were categorized based on units of BCS (1-5 scale) loss as Moderate (MOD, <0.75 units; n = 11) or Severe (SEV, ≥0.75 units; n = 9) loss groups. From Weeks -3 to 7, relative to calving, MOD and SEV cows lost on average 0.4 and 1.0-unit BCS, respe

Maternal voluntary physical activity attenuates delayed neurodevelopment in malnourished rats.

What is the central question of this study? In the present study, a reproducible model of maternal voluntary physical activity was developed to evaluate the adaptive response of physical activity by attenuating the effects of maternal undernutrition on physical features, reflex ontogeny and growth trajectory of offspring during development. What is the main finding and its importance? Maternal physical activity may induce neuronal maturation of sensorimotor connections impacting on the patterns of locomotor activity in malnourished offspring. Thus, physical activity should be considered as a t

Perception of Reproductive Health in Women with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: As inflammatory bowel diseases [IBD] affect female patients almost exclusively during their reproductive age, issues related to fertility, fecundity, pregnancy, delivery, and lactation are of utmost importance. Lack of education and misconceptions regarding the effect of disease and/or treatment on reproductive outcome may lead to voluntary childlessness and/or development of unwanted cervical pathologies which may impact tremendously on patients' welfare and quality of life. The aims of this study were to assess the perspectives of IBD patients on fertility, pregnancy a

Experimental study on the effect of oral meloxicam administration in sows on pre-weaning mortality and growth and immunoglobulin G transfer to piglets.

Parturation is an intrinsically risky and painful process for both the sow and the piglets that can cause welfare and economic problems. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been demonstrated to partially alleviate inflammation and pain after farrowing in sows. NSAIDs effects on piglet mortality and performance show discrepancies and no previous studies have investigated the underlying mechanism. The effects of oral meloxicam treatment to sows on immunoglobulin G (IgG) transfer to piglets around farrowing were investigated. A total of 30 multiparous sows were randomly treated wi

Environmental and cow-related factors affect cow locomotion and can cause misclassification in lameness detection systems.

To tackle the high prevalence of lameness, techniques to monitor cow locomotion are being developed in order to detect changes in cows' locomotion due to lameness. Obviously, in such lameness detection systems, alerts should only respond to locomotion changes that are related to lameness. However, other environmental or cow factors can contribute to locomotion changes not related to lameness and hence, might cause false alerts. In this study the effects of wet surfaces, dark environment, age, production level, lactation and gestation stage on cow locomotion were investigated. Data was collecte

Thermogenesis, blood metabolites and hormones, and growth of lambs born to ewes supplemented with algae-derived docosahexaenoic acid.

Neonatal lamb mortality is a major factor affecting profitability in the sheep industry, and lamb thermogenesis is a key element in neonatal lamb survival. Increased lamb vigor has been reported when ewes were supplemented during late gestation with algae-derived docosahexaenoic acid (DHA); however, the effects of DHA on lamb thermogenesis and immunocompetence have not been investigated. Eighty twin-bearing Targhee ewes (ages 2 to 5 yr; 68.5 ± 3 kg) were assigned randomly to 1 of 2 supplement treatments to determine the effects of feeding DHA to ewes during late gestation and early lactation o
