Understanding Patient Anxieties in the Social Media Era: Qualitative Analysis and Natural Language Processing of an Online Male Infertility Community.

BACKGROUND: Couples struggling with infertility are increasingly turning to the internet for infertility-related content and to connect with others. Most of the published data on infertility and the internet only address the experiences of women, with limited studies focusing exclusively on internet discussions on male factor infertility. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to understand the concerns and experiences of discussants on an online male infertility community and to provide insight into their perceptions of interactions with health care professionals. METHODS: Using the large-sca

Expectations and experiences of parents taking part in parent-child interaction programmes to promote child language: a qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: Parent-child interaction therapies are commonly used by speech and language therapists (SLTs) when providing services to young children with language learning difficulties. However, the way parents react to the demands of such interventions is clearly important, especially for those from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. Parents play a central role in the therapy process so to ensure parent engagement, and to maximize intervention effectiveness, parents' views must be considered. AIMS: To explore the expectations and experiences of parents from socially disadvantaged backgrounds

Correlations between histological subtypes and neurocognitive assessment of language area tumors. Our 43 case series and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Brain tumor location is related with specific, focal neurological impairment, but also with more diffuse, generalized and subtitle neurocognitive dysfunctions. For a better evaluation of these cases, we need a specific battery of tests. Beside the impact of preoperative status on surgical decision, the quantification of postoperative function alteration is essential in neurorehabilitation. PATIENTS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: We proposed a battery of tests to assess the neurocognitive function, with an accent on language adapted to Romanian population. The 43 cases included in the stu

Patient motivational language in the prediction of symptom change, clinically significant response, and time to response in psychotherapy for generalized anxiety disorder.

Existing research demonstrates that patient change-talk (CT), or self-arguments for change, associates variably with favorable outcomes, whereas counter change-talk (CCT), or self-arguments against change, associates consistently with poorer outcomes. However, most studies on change language have focused on posttreatment versus more proximal outcomes. Addressing this gap, we examined Session 1 CT and CCT as predictors of during-treatment worry change, likelihood of clinically significant response during treatment, and time to response across cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT; n = 43) and CBT i

Exploring gender as a potential source of bias in adult judgments of children with specific language impairment and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

The purpose of this follow-up study to Ludlow (2013) was to examine potential sources of variability within attributional ratings adults (age range: 21-73) assigned to child speakers affected by either Specific Language Impairment (SLI) or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Factors considered were rater's gender [Rater Male (RM) or Rater Female (RF)], the reported gender of the speakers [Speaker Male (SM) or Speaker Female (SF)], and the type of neurodevelopmental disorder involved (SLI or ADHD). Eighty participants (40 male and 40 female) rated brief, transcribed, narratives pre

Age-sensitive associations of segmental and suprasegmental perception with sentence-level language skills in Mandarin-speaking children with cochlear implants.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: It remains unclear how recognition of segmental and suprasegmental phonemes contributes to sentence-level language processing skills in Mandarin-speaking children with cochlear implants (CIs). Our study examined the influence of implantation age on the recognition of consonants, lexical tones and sentences respectively, and more importantly, the contribution of phonological skills to sentence repetition accuracy in Mandarin-speaking children with CIs. METHODS: The participants were three groups of prelingually deaf children who received cochlear implants at various ages an

New Perspectives on Emotional Processing in People with Symptomatic Huntington's Disease: Impaired Emotion Regulation and Recognition of Emotional Body Language†.

OBJECTIVE: Emotion regulation and emotional body language (EBL) recognition represent two fundamental components of emotional processing that have recently seen a considerable surge in research interest, in part due to the role they play in optimizing mental health. This appears to be particularly true for clinical conditions that can profoundly affect emotional functioning. Among these is Huntington's disease (HD), a neurodegenerative disorder that is associated with several psychological difficulties and cognitive impairments, including well-established deficits in facial emotion recognition

Assessment of conversational pragmatics: A screening tool for pragmatic language impairment in a control population of children aged 6-12 years.

Pragmatics can be defined as the way in which language is used to communicate in a given social context. Although there is a lack of a standardized assessment, healthcare professionals find themselves confronted with pragmatic language skill impairments in children with neurodevelopmental disorders or brain injuries. The characterization of language use causes problems in social interactions, which has clinical implications in daily life. However, this is still underestimated because there is currently no quick, easy-to-use screening device to rank these deficits. We have developed a pragmatic

Deficient Explicit Access to Phonological Representations Explains Phonological Fluency Difficulties in Greek Children With Dyslexia and/or Developmental Language Disorder.

It is well-established that children with dyslexia and/or Developmental Language Disorder (hereafter children with DDLD) perform poorly on phonological tasks compared to typically developing (TD) children. However, there has been some debate as to whether their phonological deficit arises directly from an impairment in phonological representations, or instead from deficient access to (intact) phonological representations. This study tested the Degraded Phonological Representations Hypothesis and the Deficient Phonological Access Hypothesis using a task that is not often used with children with

Development problems were common five years after positive screening for language disorders and, or, autism at 2.5 years of age.

AIM: This study identified whether children who had screened positive for either developmental language disorder (DLD) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at the age of 2.5 years had neurodevelopmental assessments five years later. METHODS: Our study cohort were 288 children born from 1 July 2008 to 20 June 2009 who screened positive for DLD and, or, ASD at 2.5 years. Of these, 237 children were referred to, and assessed, at the Paediatric Speech and Language Pathology clinic (n = 176) or the Child Neuropsychiatry Clinic (n = 61) at the Queen Silvia Children's Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden. English as a foreign language teacher training needs and perceived preparedness to include dyslexic learners: The case of Greece, Cyprus, and Poland.

This study examines the effect of demographic variables on the beliefs of teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) about their preparedness to include dyslexic learners in mainstream classrooms in Greece, Cyprus, and Poland and identifies their professional development needs. Statistically significant multivariate analysis effects were obtained for country, training, teaching experience with dyslexic learners, and school type. Unlike overall teaching experience and completed level of education (degree), the type of teaching experience with dyslexic EFL learners (direct contact and perso

The role of noninitial clusters in the Children's Test of Nonword Repetition: Evidence from children with language impairment and typically developing children.

The Children's Test of Nonword Repetition (CNRep) is one of the most popular tests of nonword repetition. The test is composed of nonwords of different length, and normative data suggest that children experience more difficulties in repeating long nonwords. An analysis of the distribution of phonological clusters in the test shows that noninitial clusters are unequally distributed in the test: They only appear in long nonwords (four and five syllables). For this reason, we hypothesized that the difficulties children encounter with long nonwords may be influenced by the phonological complexity

Partial resection of presurgical fMRI activation is associated with a postsurgical loss of language function after frontal lobe epilepsy surgery.

We describe five patients with frontal lobe epilepsy who underwent electrocortical stimulation (ES) for language localization and language functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) prior to epilepsy surgery. Six months after surgery, three patients suffered from a drop of verbal fluency. In all of them, frontal areas with presurgical language fMRI activity were resected. Our results suggest that resection in regions of areas with presurgical fMRI activation is not without risk for a postsurgical loss of function, even when ES results were negative for language function in these areas.
