Assays of interleukin-1 (IL-1) and IL-2 were done in supernatants from phytohaemagglutinin-activated lymphocyte cultures from 10 children suffering from minimal-change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS) to assess their role in the aetiopathogenesis of this disorder. Increased levels of IL-1 and IL-2 had been found in supernatants from patients having MCNS compared with controls, suggesting a significant role of these cytokines in the immunopathogenesis of proteinuria in this syndrome.

The lymphocyte proliferation test (LPT) was compared with the patch test in the diagnosis of nickel contact sensitivity. Of the 21 subjects with nickel contact allergy, the patch test detected 20 (95%). The T cell response to beryllium, measured in bronchoalveolar lavage by the lymphocyte transformation test (LTT), is a critical diagnostic test for discriminating between chronic beryllium disease (CBD) and other granulomatous diseases. We examined the sensitivity, reproducibility, and methods of a less invasive, peripheral blood LTT in 17 patients with CBD and in 18 beryllium-exposed control subjects. Groups of beagle dogs were exposed by inhalation to attain either low or high initial lung burdens (ILB) of BeO calcined at 500 degrees or 1000 degrees C. Dogs were killed at 8, 32, 64, 180, and 365 days after exposure for evaluation of beryllium tissue burdens and histopathologic examination.
