Computational approach for decoding malaria drug targets from single-cell transcriptomics and finding potential drug molecule.

Malaria is a deadly disease caused by Plasmodium parasites. While potent drugs are available in the market for malaria treatment, over the years, Plasmodium parasites have successfully developed resistance against many, if not all, front-line drugs. This poses a serious threat to global malaria eradication efforts, and the continued discovery of new drugs is necessary to tackle this debilitating disease. With recent unprecedented progress in machine learning techniques, single-cell transcriptomic in Plasmodium offers a powerful tool for identifying crucial proteins as a drug target and subsequ

A machine learning approach to predict quality of life changes in patients with Parkinson's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Parkinson disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with an annual incidence of approximately 0.1%. While primarily considered a motor disorder, increasing emphasis is being placed on its non-motor features. Both manifestations of the disease affect quality of life (QoL), which is captured in part II of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS-II). While useful in the management of patients, it remains challenging to predict how QoL will change over time in PD. The goal of this work is to explore the feasibility of a machine learning algorithm to predict Qo

Detection of ventricular arrhythmia using hybrid time-frequency-based features and deep neural network.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a major cause of death among patients with heart diseases. It occurs mainly due to ventricular tachyarrhythmia (VTA) which includes ventricular tachycardia (VT) and ventricular fibrillation (VF) conditions. The main challenging task is to predict the VTA condition at a faster rate and timely application of automatic external defibrillator (AED) for saving lives. In this study, a VF/VT classification scheme has been proposed using a deep neural network (DNN) approach using hybrid time-frequency-based features. Two annotated public domain ECG databases (CUDB and VFD

Single-modal and multi-modal false arrhythmia alarm reduction using attention-based convolutional and recurrent neural networks.

This study proposes a deep learning model that effectively suppresses the false alarms in the intensive care units (ICUs) without ignoring the true alarms using single- and multi- modal biosignals. Most of the current work in the literature are either rule-based methods, requiring prior knowledge of arrhythmia analysis to build rules, or classical machine learning approaches, depending on hand-engineered features. In this work, we apply convolutional neural networks to automatically extract time-invariant features, an attention mechanism to put more emphasis on the important regions of the seg

Machine Unlearning: Taxonomy, Metrics, Applications, Challenges, and Prospects.

Personal digital data is a critical asset, and governments worldwide have enforced laws and regulations to protect data privacy. Data users have been endowed with the "right to be forgotten" (RTBF) of their data. In the course of machine learning (ML), the forgotten right requires a model provider to delete user data and its subsequent impact on ML models upon user requests. Machine unlearning (MU) emerges to address this, which has garnered ever-increasing attention from both industry and academia. Specifically, MU allows model providers to eliminate the influence of unlearned data without re

Unveiling the effect of urinary xenoestrogens on chronic kidney disease in adults: A machine learning model.

Exposure to three primary xenoestrogens (XEs), including phthalates, parabens, and phenols, has been strongly associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD). An interpretable machine learning (ML) model was developed to predict CKD using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database spanning from 2007 to 2016. Four ML algorithms-random forest classifier (RF), XGBoost (XGB), k-nearest neighbors (KNN), and support vector machine (SVM)-were used alongside traditional logistic regression to predict CKD. The study included 6910 U.S. adults, with XGB showing the high

An 8-Micrometer-Thick Film Strain Sensor with Conformal 3D Microstructure for Accurate Detection of Body Motion and Air Leakage.

Elastomer-based resistive super-thin film strain sensors show great application potentials in electronic skins, human-machine interaction systems, wearable devices for healthcare, and machine learning algorithms. However, it is challenging to accurately monitor the deformation of human body joints and organs with curved surfaces (e.g., knees, throats, finger joints) by only taking advantage of material thickness and elasticity of conventional 2D film strain sensors. Herein, a simple strategy is developed to fabricate conformal elastomeric thin film sensors with periodic 3D microstructure inspi
