Worldwide trends in diabetes prevalence and treatment from 1990 to 2022: a pooled analysis of 1108 population-representative studies with 141 million participants.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes can be detected at the primary health-care level, and effective treatments lower the risk of complications. There are insufficient data on the coverage of treatment for diabetes and how it has changed. We estimated trends from 1990 to 2022 in diabetes prevalence and treatment for 200 countries and territories. METHODS: We used data from 1108 population-representative studies with 141 million participants aged 18 years and older with measurements of fasting glucose and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), and information on diabetes treatment. We defined diabetes as having a fast

Final efficacy analysis, interim safety analysis, and immunogenicity of a single dose of recombinant novel coronavirus vaccine (adenovirus type 5 vector) in adults 18 years and older: an international, multicentre, randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial.

BACKGROUND: The Ad5-nCoV vaccine is a single-dose adenovirus type 5 (Ad5) vectored vaccine expressing the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein that was well-tolerated and immunogenic in phase 1 and 2 studies. In this study, we report results on the final efficacy and interim safety analyses of the phase 3 trial. METHODS: This double-blind, randomised, international, placebo-controlled, endpoint-case driven, phase 3, clinical trial enrolled adults aged 18 years older at study centres in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Pakistan, and Russia. Participants were eligible for the study if they had no unstable or seve

Effectiveness and safety of 7-day high-dose primaquine and single-dose tafenoquine versus 14-day low-dose primaquine in patients with Plasmodium vivax malaria (EFFORT): a multicentre, open-label, randomised, controlled, superiority trial.

BACKGROUND: Shorter courses of primaquine and single-dose tafenoquine have potential to improve the prevention of recurrent Plasmodium vivax infections, but there are few data on their comparative effectiveness when provided unsupervised. We aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of these new treatment options. METHODS: We conducted a multicentre, open-label, randomised, controlled, superiority trial in Ethiopia, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Cambodia. Adult patients (aged ≥18 years, or aged ≥16 years in Indonesia) with uncomplicated P vivax infection and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G

Population structure and spatial distribution of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex in Catalonia.

BACKGROUND: Despite being a low-incidence area, Catalonia experiences substantial migration flows from countries with high tuberculosis (TB) burden, potentially making it a focal point for various Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) lineages. AIM: We aimed to characterize the spatial structure of MTBC (sub)lineages in Catalonia, assess their associations with clinical and epidemiological factors, and identify spatiotemporal hotspots of cases belonging to the same sublineage. METHODS: Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was performed on 783 MTBC isolates collected across Catalonia from Decemb

Two decades (2005 to 2025) of avian influenza research trends, knowledge gaps and distribution of emerging H5N1 2.3.4.4b clade in South Asia.

Avian influenza virus (AIV) remains a persistent zoonotic and economic threat in South Asia, yet a comprehensive understanding of its research trajectory, outbreak patterns, and viral evolution in the region remains limited. This study integrates bibliometric, epidemiological, metadata, and phylogenetic analyses to assess two decades (2005–2025) of AIV research and H5N1 dynamics in South Asia. Bibliographic records were retrieved from Scopus and analysed using VOSviewer and Biblioshiny, while hemagglutinin (HA) gene sequences of H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b were obtained from GISAID and analysed using
