Chemotherapy-induced nausea, vomiting, and fatigue--the role of individual differences related to sensory perception and autonomic reactivity.

BACKGROUND: In spite of antiemetics, postchemotherapy side effects continue to be common and may affect compliance to cancer treatment. Among the known factors associated with increased symptom severity are: younger age, treatment toxicity, expected severity, and distress, but little is still known about the role of other factors. The aim of our study was to investigate the role of individual differences related to sensory perception for posttreatment side effects. METHODS: Hundred and twenty-five women receiving adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer completed measures of absorption, autono

Development of visual motion perception in children of patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder: a follow-up study.

The "dorsal-stream vulnerability" hypothesis claims that motion-sensitive areas in the dorsal occipito-parietal visual system are vulnerable to genetic and environmental factors which affect brain maturation and development. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility that developmental anomalies of directional motion perception can be detected in children of mothers with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Motion and form coherence thresholds were measured in 36 children of mothers with schizophrenia, 28 children of mothers with bipolar disorder, and 30 children with negative fam

Left posterior auditory-related cortices participate both in speech perception and speech production: Neural overlap revealed by fMRI.

Recent neuroimaging studies and neuropsychological data suggest that there are regions in posterior auditory cortex that participate both in speech perception and speech production. An outstanding question is whether the same neural regions support both perception and production or whether there exist discrete cortical fields subserving these functions. Previous neurophysiological studies suggest that there is indeed regional overlap between these systems, but those studies used a rehearsal task to assess production. The present study addressed this question in an event-related fMRI experiment

Speech perception in preschoolers at family risk for dyslexia: relations with low-level auditory processing and phonological ability.

We tested categorical perception and speech-in-noise perception in a group of five-year-old preschool children genetically at risk for dyslexia, compared to a group of well-matched control children and a group of adults. Both groups of children differed significantly from the adults on all speech measures. Comparing both child groups, the risk group presented a slight but significant deficit in speech-in-noise perception, particularly in the most difficult listening condition. For categorical perception a marginally significant deficit was observed on the discrimination task but not on the ide

Positive patch-test reactions to gold: patients' perception of relevance and the role of titanium dioxide in cosmetics.

BACKGROUND: Positive patch-test reactions to gold that are without obvious clinical relevance are common. We speculate that titanium dioxide in cosmetics and sunscreens may adsorb gold particles in jewelry that occasionally contacts facial skin and cause contact dermatitis on this area despite the absence of dermatitis under gold jewelry worn on the hands. OBJECTIVE: To identify subgroups of gold allergic patients who improve with avoidance of gold. METHODS: A questionnaire was mailed to 102 gold-allergic patients. RESULTS: There were 49 responses, of which all but one were from women. When

Prevalence of family history of kidney disease and perception of risk for kidney disease: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: A family history of kidney disease is associated with an increased risk for end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, it is unclear whether blacks are more likely to have a family history of ESRD than other groups independently of kidney disease risk factors. Moreover, their risk perception for kidney disease is unknown. METHODS: The association of race with family history of ESRD and perception of risk for kidney disease was examined in a representative random sample of 402 Georgia residents who completed a telephone interview. Logistic regression analysis was used to derive adjus

Perception of matching and conflicting audiovisual speech in dyslexic and fluent readers: an fMRI study at 3 T.

We presented phonetically matching and conflicting audiovisual vowels to 10 dyslexic and 10 fluent-reading young adults during "clustered volume acquisition" functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at 3 T. We further assessed co-variation between the dyslexic readers' phonological processing abilities, as indexed by neuropsychological test scores, and BOLD signal change within the visual cortex, auditory cortex, and Broca's area. Both dyslexic and fluent readers showed increased activation during observation of phonetically conflicting compared to matching vowels within the classical moto

Differences in perception of dysentery and enteric fever and willingness to receive vaccines among rural residents in China.

BACKGROUND: Enteric diseases including dysentery and enteric fever remain significant public health problems in China. While vaccines offer great potential in controlling these diseases, greater understanding of factors influencing acceptance of vaccines is needed to create effective enteric disease control programs in rural China. DESIGN: Cross-sectional quantitative study with randomly sampled households from two sites in China, one experiencing high rates of shigellosis (Zengding) and the other of typhoid/paratyphoid (Lingchuan). METHODS: Sociobehavioral survey data were collected through

Increased positive versus negative affective perception and memory in healthy volunteers following selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibition.

OBJECTIVE: Antidepressants that inhibit the reuptake of serotonin (SSRIs) or norepinephrine (SNRIs) are effective in the treatment of disorders such as depression and anxiety. Cognitive psychological theories emphasize the importance of correcting negative biases of information processing in the nonpharmacological treatment of these disorders, but it is not known whether antidepressant drugs can directly modulate the neural processing of affective information. The present study therefore assessed the actions of repeated antidepressant administration on perception and memory for positive and ne

Exaggerated perception of normal physiological responses to stress and hypercapnia in young women with numerous functional somatic symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: This study tested whether functional somatic symptoms are associated with exaggerated increases in self-reported anxiety and somatic complaints in response to stress and CO(2)-enriched air breathing, and whether this association exists in parallel to or in the absence of exaggerated physiological responses. METHODS: Out of 499 young somatically healthy undergraduate women, 18 participants high in functional somatic symptoms (HSS group) and 18 participants low in symptoms (LSS) were selected. They were submitted to mental stress, mild physical exercise and relaxation during conditio

Evaluation of sensory function after median nerve decompression in carpal tunnel syndrome using the current perception threshold test.

The recovery level for sensory function after carpal tunnel release for the treatment of idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) was assessed with the current perception threshold (CPT) test. Seventeen CTS patients (21 hands) were followed, and the CPTs at the index finger of each patient was measured preoperatively and at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. After carpal tunnel release, there was significant recovery of CPT at all stimulation frequencies, indicating improvement of all sensory functions including sensations of temperature, pain, touch, and vibration.

Risk Perception and Decision-making Processes in Candidates for Genetic Testing for Huntington's Disease: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.

This study is concerned with how candidates for pre-symptomatic genetic testing for Huntington's disease represent their risk status and how they describe the process involved in their deciding whether or not to take the test. Transcripts of semi-structured interviews with five women offered testing were analysed by interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The women find it difficult to conceptualize their current risk, and express reasons for a perceived enhanced or diminished risk based on, for example, number of previous family members affected or pre-selection of a likely recipient

Tactile perception in blind Braille readers: a psychophysical study of acuity and hyperacuity using gratings and dot patterns.

It is not clear whether the blind are generally superior to the sighted on measures of tactile sensitivity or whether they excel only on certain tests owing to the specifics of their tactile experience. We compared the discrimination performance of blind Braille readers and age-matched sighted subjects on three tactile tasks using precisely specified stimuli. Initially, the blind significantly outperformed the sighted at a hyperacuity task using Braille-like dot patterns, although, with practice, both groups performed equally well. On two other tasks, hyperacute discrimination of gratings that

Electrophysiological studies of human face perception. I: Potentials generated in occipitotemporal cortex by face and non-face stimuli.

This and the following two papers describe event-related potentials (ERPs) evoked by visual stimuli in 98 patients in whom electrodes were placed directly upon the cortical surface to monitor medically intractable seizures. Patients viewed pictures of faces, scrambled faces, letter-strings, number-strings, and animate and inanimate objects. This paper describes ERPs generated in striate and peristriate cortex, evoked by faces, and evoked by sinusoidal gratings, objects and letter-strings. Short-latency ERPs generated in striate and peristriate cortex were sensitive to elementary stimulus featu

Multiple-domain dissociation between impaired visual perception and preserved mental imagery in a patient with bilateral extrastriate lesions.

A brain-damaged patient is described whose pattern of performance provides insight into both the functional mechanisms and the neural structures involved in visual mental imagery. The patient became severely agnosic, alexic, achromatopsic and prosopagnosic following bilateral brain lesions in the temporo-occipital cortex. However, her mental imagery for the same visual entities that she could not perceive was perfectly preserved. This clear-cut dissociation held across all the major domains of high-level vision: object recognition, reading, colour and face processing. Our findings, together wi

[Disorders of color perception and increase glare sensitivity in phenytoin and carbamazepine therapy. Ocular side effects of anticonvulsants].

Advanced psychophysical tests, performed in 42 epileptic patients, show that the antiepileptic drugs phenytoin and carbamazepine can specifically affect the retinal function, while Valproic Acid and the epileptic seizures do not. The Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue and Panel D-15 désaturé tests revealed an accumulation of errors along the tritan/tetartan axis (blue colour vision deficiencies) and a high total error score. The same defect was shown by measurement of the spectral sensitivity functions. The results obtained for mesopic vision and especially glare sensitivity measured by nyktometry wer

Maternal perception of first-born infants: a controlled comparative study of mothers of premature and full-term infants.

Mothers of premature infants monitored at home for apnea and mothers of full-term infants had significantly more positive perceptions of their infants than mothers of premature infants not monitored. Using the Brief Symptom Inventory 2 weeks after the infants went home from the hospital, the mothers of infants not monitored reported significantly more psychological symptoms than the other two groups. Maternal perceptions of their infants had not changed when interviewed 6 months later. Implications for nursing practice are discussed.
