Physical activity after cardiac arrest; protocol of a sub-study in the Targeted Hypothermia versus Targeted Normothermia after Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest trial (TTM2).

AIMS: The primary aim of this study is to investigate whether out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) survivors have lower levels of self-reported physical activity compared to a non-cardiac arrest (CA) control group who had acute myocardial infarction (MI). Additional aims are to explore potential predictors of physical inactivity (older age, female gender, problems with general physical function, global cognition, mental processing speed/attention, anxiety symptoms, depression symptoms, kinesiophobia, fatigue), and to investigate the relationship between self-reported and objectively measured

Associations Between Cognitive Performance and Pain in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Comorbidity with Fibromyalgia Does Matter.

BACKGROUND: In addition to the frequently reported pain complaints, performance-based cognitive capabilities in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) with and without comorbid fibromyalgia (FM) are significantly worse than those of healthy controls. In various chronic pain populations, cognitive impairments are known to be related to pain severity. However, to the best of our knowledge, the association between cognitive performance and experimental pain measurements has never been examined in CFS patients. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the association between cognitive perfor

Validation of the PrEP Use Self-Efficacy (PrEP-Use) Scale Among Sexual Minority Men.

Self-efficacy may influence several stages of the PrEP care continuum, yet most validated measures capture only one component rather than a comprehensive approach. To address this gap, this study validated the PrEP Use Self-Efficacy (PrEP-USE) scale. Sexual minority men (N = 300) prescribed daily oral PrEP completed a baseline assessment including sociodemographics, the PrEP-USE scale, self-reported adherence, and PrEP-related variables (attitudes, stigma, subjective and descriptive norms) as part of a larger randomized controlled trial. Exploratory factor analysis identified a three-factor mo

Self-Powered Electrodeposition System for Sub-10-nm Silver Nanoparticles with High-Efficiency Antibacterial Activity.

Recently, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been widely applied in sterilization due to their excellent antibacterial properties. However, AgNPs require rigorous storage conditions because their antibacterial performances are significantly affected by environmental conditions. Instant fabrication provides a remedy for this drawback. In this study, we propose a self-powered electrodeposition system to synthesize sub-10-nm AgNPs, consisting of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) as the self-powered source, a capacitor for storing electrical energy from the TENG, and an electrochemical component

Fears of receiving compassion from others predict safety behaviour use in social anxiety disorder over and above fears of negative self-portrayal.

Why do people with social anxiety disorder (SAD) engage in the use of safety behaviours? While past research has established that fears of negative self-portrayal are strongly associated with safety behaviour use in SAD, no research to date has investigated the potential role of fears of receiving compassion. Both types of fears could motivate those with SAD to engage in safety behaviours in order to keep others at a distance. In the present study, 150 participants with a clinical diagnosis of SAD completed measures of fears of negative self-portrayal, fears of receiving compassion, and safety

A longitudinal study investigating the relationships among multicultural receptivity, sense of community, and self-esteem of Korean adolescents.

The relative homogeneity in ethnicity and language of native Koreans and their highly competitive lifestyle, especially among adolescents preparing for college, have limited their solidarity with heterogeneous ethnic groups, which may cause problems in this global era. This study uses the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey to explore the relationships among multicultural receptivity, sense of community, and self-esteem for Korean adolescents over three time points. For this purpose this study conducted an autoregressive cross-lagged path analysis, controlling for covariates such as gender,

Sensor and Survey Measures Associated With Daily Fatigue in HIV: Findings From a Mixed-Method Study.

Fatigue is the most common symptom among people living with HIV (PLWH), but may have many causes. This mixed-method study was designed to characterize PLWH's fatigue experiences and associated self-management behaviors, using Two Minds Theory. Fifty-five PLWH completed daily smartphone surveys on psychological states and fatigue at random times for 30 days and used a Fitbit Alta™ wristband. Within-person multilevel models were used to identify univariate correlates of fatigue. The first 25 participants also completed qualitative interviews about their experiences, and results were compared acr

The moderated effects of video feedback for social anxiety disorder.

Despite initially positive results, video feedback for social anxiety has never been shown to reduce social anxiety in a controlled experiment with diagnosed participants, and only once with undiagnosed participants. Previous studies arguably did not detect such an effect because of limited assessment of anxiety and potential moderators. We tested video feedback with cognitive preparation among treatment-seeking participants with a primary diagnosis of social anxiety disorder. In Session 1, participants gave an extemporaneous speech and either received the intervention or not. In Session 2, 6-

Prevalence, self-care behaviors, and self-care activities for peripheral neuropathy symptoms of HIV/AIDS.

As part of a larger randomized controlled trial examining the efficacy of an HIV/AIDS symptom management manual (n = 775), this study examined the prevalence of peripheral neuropathy in HIV-infected individuals at 12 sites in the USA, Puerto Rico, and Africa. Neuropathy was reported by 44% of the sample; however, only 29.4% reported initiating self-care behaviors to address the neuropathy symptoms. Antiretroviral therapy was found to increase the frequency of neuropathy symptoms, with an increased mean intensity of 28%. A principal axis factor analysis with Promax rotation was used to assess t

Age-specific impact of self-monitored pulse pressure on hypertensive target organ damage in treated hypertensive patients.

The authors examined the relationship of clinic and self-measured pulse pressure with target organ damage in 597 treated hypertensive patients without clinical evidence of renal dysfunction or a history of heart failure. The cross-sectional relationships of plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and urinary albumin/creatinine ratio with clinic and self-monitored pulse pressures were estimated in age tertile groups: younger than 67 years (n=193), 67 to 75 years (n=216), and older than 75 years (n=188), controlling for various confounding factors. In multivariable analyses, both clinic and self-

Temperament and character profile of eating disorders: a controlled study with the Temperament and Character Inventory.

OBJECTIVE: The question whether anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are different disorders or the extremes of a psychopathologic spectrum still has no definite answer. A way to face this problem is to examine the personality traits underlying these disorders. METHOD: The Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) was administered to 141 anorectics (70 Restrictor and 71 Binge-purging), to 102 bulimics, and to 100 controls. The Temperament and Character Inventory main scales are Novelty Seeking, Harm Avoidance, Reward Dependence, Persistence, Self-Directedness, Cooperativeness, and S

Effects of gender and ethnicity on duty-related posttraumatic stress symptoms among urban police officers.

We studied 655 urban police officers (21% female, 48% white, 24% black, and 28% Hispanic) to assess ethnic and gender differences in duty-related symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We obtained self-report measures of: a) PTSD symptoms, b) peritraumatic dissociation, c) exposure to duty-related critical incidents, d) general psychiatric symptoms, e) response bias due to social desirability, and f) demographic variables. We found that self-identified Hispanic-American officers evidenced greater PTSD symptoms than both self-identified European-American and self-identified African-A

Impact of the Cardio-Meds Mobile App on Heart Failure Knowledge and Medication Adherence: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is a prevalent chronic condition for which optimal management depends not only on guideline-directed medical therapy but also on patients' understanding of their disease, recognition of warning signs, and sustained medication adherence, which remains challenging in routine care. Mobile health interventions may support therapeutic education and self-management; however, many available apps lack validated content and local relevance. Cardio-Meds is a mobile app developed at Geneva University Hospitals to support HF self-management through structured educational con

Stereochemistry in subcomponent self-assembly.

CONSPECTUS: As Pasteur noted more than 150 years ago, asymmetry exists in matter at all organization levels. Biopolymers such as proteins or DNA adopt one-handed conformations, as a result of the chirality of their constituent building blocks. Even at the level of elementary particles, asymmetry exists due to parity violation in the weak nuclear force. While the origin of homochirality in living systems remains obscure, as does the possibility of its connection with broken symmetries at larger or smaller length scales, its centrality to biomolecular structure is clear: the single-handed forms

"My life disappeared in illness": bipolar disorder and themes in narrative identity.

Bipolar Disorder (BD) has substantial consequences for the course of life and the formation of self and identity. In the present study, we extended the existing literature by examining narrative identity. Fifteen female outpatients with remitted BD and fifteen non-clinical control participants described past and future chapters in their life stories. The chapters were coded for agency, communion, redemption and contamination. Patients diagnosed with BD described their past chapters with lower agency, lower communion and more contamination compared to the control group. Contrary to our expectat

Moderating Effects of Social Determinants of Health on Quality of Life in Expressive Writing Interventions Among Chinese American Breast Cancer Survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Chinese American breast cancer survivors (CABCS) often face cultural challenges regarding emotional expression. Expressive writing (EW) interventions can improve emotional expression and, thus, quality of life (QOL), but individual responses to EW may vary. We examined whether specific social determinants of health (SDOH)-personal income, education, employment status, and marital status-moderated the effect of EW on QOL among CABCS. METHODS: A three-arm randomized controlled trial of EW was conducted among CABCS (N = 136). Conditions were self-regulation (SR; emotions, coping, posi

Peer victimization, cognitive factors, and aggression: a cross-sectional network analysis in adolescents.

Adolescent aggression is influenced by multiple interacting cognitive and behavioral processes. Previous research has primarily used mediation and moderation models to examine directional mechanisms such as hostile attribution bias and anger rumination. However, these approaches provide limited insight into how these factors operate as an interconnected system. To this end, we employed cross-sectional network analysis to exploratorily examine the structural organization of the aggression-related network in Chinese adolescents, identify nodes with the highest centrality and bridge centrality, a
