Correlative variation of economically valuable traits in South Kazakh Merino.

Fine-fleeced sheep are distinguished by numerous economically valuable traits that constitute the foundation for productive distinctions among breeds, populations, lines, and individuals. Many of these traits have already been mentioned or thoroughly examined during studies on the correlative variability of productivity indicators, blood parameters, characteristics of pulmonary gas exchange, histological structures of the skin, and features of the experimental sheep's coat. The objective of our research was to investigate the correlative variability of key economically valuable traits that cha

Seroprevalence of Coxiella burnetii in selected populations of domestic ruminants in Newfoundland.

The seroprevalence of Coxiella burnetii among cattle, sheep, and goats in Newfoundland was determined by microimmunofluorescence. Seropositivity to phase II antigen increased in sheep from 3.1% in 1997 to 23.5% in 1999-2000 (P < 0.001). Cows (24%) had antibodies to phase I antigen; goats (15.6%) had antibodies to phase II antigen. Seroprevalence of C. burnetii is increasing among sheep.

Source genotype influence on cross species transmission of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies evaluated by RT-QuIC.

Scrapie is a naturally occurring transmissible spongiform encephalopathy of sheep and goats. This fatal neurodegenerative disease is caused by misfolding of the cellular prion protein to pathogenic β-rich conformers (PrPSc) that accumulate in higher order structures of the brain and other tissues. This conversion has been used for in vitro assays including serial protein misfolding amplification and real-time quaking induced conversion (RT-QuIC). RT-QuIC can be used for the detection of prions and for strain discrimination in a variety of biological tissues from humans and animals. In this stu

Comparative innocuity and efficacy of live and inactivated sheeppox vaccines.

BACKGROUND: Sheeppox (SPP) is one of the priorities, high-impact animal diseases in many developing countries, where live attenuated vaccines are routinely used against sheeppox virus (SPPV). In an event of an SPP outbreak, historically disease-free countries would hesitate to use of live vaccines against SPPVdue to the safety and trade reasons. Currently no killed SPPV vaccines are commercially available. In this study, we developed an inactivated Romanian SPPVvaccine and assessed its efficacy and potency in comparison with a live attenuated Romanian SPPV vaccine. Four naïve sheep were vaccin

Emergence of a tetracycline-resistant Campylobacter jejuni clone associated with outbreaks of ovine abortion in the United States.

Campylobacter infection is one of the major causes of ovine abortions worldwide. Historically, Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus was the major cause of Campylobacter-associated abortion in sheep; however, Campylobacter jejuni is increasingly associated with sheep abortions. We examined the species distribution, genotypes, and antimicrobial susceptibilities of abortion-associated Campylobacter isolates obtained from multiple lambing seasons on different farms in Iowa, Idaho, South Dakota, and California. We found that C. jejuni has replaced C. fetus as the predominant Campylobacter species causi

An epidemiological study on ovine babesiosis in the Mashhad suburb area, province of Khorasan, Iran.

The prevalence of Babesia spp. infection was studied in sheep of the Mashhad area in Iran from 1998 to 2000. A total of 677 sheep originating from 115 flocks were clinically examined and investigated for the presence of Babesia spp. in appropriate blood smears and any tick species on the body of the animals. The study revealed that the infection rate for Babesia ovis and Babesia motasi were 167 (24.6%) and 4 (0.5%), respectively. Double (mixed) infections occurred in 21 (3%) sheep. Differences in infection rates were statistically non-significant between male and female sheep and between diffe

The Development of a Multivalent Capripoxvirus-Vectored Vaccine Candidate to Protect against Sheeppox, Goatpox, Peste des Petits Ruminants, and Rift Valley Fever.

Capripoxviruses are the causative agents of sheeppox, goatpox, and lumpy skin disease (LSD) in cattle, which cause economic losses to the livestock industry in Africa and Asia. Capripoxviruses are currently controlled using several live attenuated vaccines. It was previously demonstrated that a lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) field isolate from Warmbaths (WB) South Africa, ORF 005 (IL-10) gene-deleted virus (LSDV WB005KO), was able to protect sheep and goats against sheeppox and goatpox. Subsequently, genes encoding the protective antigens for peste des petits ruminants (PPR) and Rift Valley f

Longitudinal Follow-Up of Clinical Superficial Ovine Caseous Lymphadenitis.

Caseous lymphadenitis is an infectious disease that has a significant economic impact on sheep breeding. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of season, animals' age, sex, body score and shearing on the clinical incidence of caseous lymphadenitis, relapses and abscess location in sheep from Settat province, Morocco. In this longitudinal study, 274 clinically healthy sheep were recruited in six flocks among 1451 inspected sheep and followed during 12 months to cover four seasons. The animals involved in this study were assigned to different age categories at continuous recru

Estimating the impact on food and edible materials of changing scrapie control measures: The scrapie control model.

Multiple controls established during the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) epidemic were not solely applied to BSE in cattle, but were implemented for scrapie in sheep and goats due to concerns over the occurrence of BSE in sheep. In the absence of BSE in sheep being observed, control measures for prion diseases are now being evaluated to ensure they remain proportionate to risk. This risk assessment, aims to estimate, by use of stochastic simulation, the impact of reducing controls for Specified Risk Materials (SRM) from sheep at abattoir. Three scenarios have been included: 1) current l

Exploring the utility of circulating miRNAs as diagnostic biomarkers of fasciolosis.

Effective management and control of parasitic infections on farms depends on their early detection. Traditional serological diagnostic methods for Fasciola hepatica infection in livestock are specific and sensitive, but currently the earliest detection of the parasite only occurs at approximately three weeks post-infection. At this timepoint, parasites have already entered the liver and caused the tissue damage and immunopathology that results in reduced body weight and loss in productivity. Here, we investigated whether the differential abundance of micro(mi)miRNAs in sera of F. hepatica-infe

[The rabbit as a reservoir host of Fasciola hepatica? (author's transl)].

Following field observations, the ability of Fasciola hepatica to develop in domestic rabbits as compared with sheep was investigated under experimental conditions. The results indicate the development of F. hepatica is impaired in various phases after rabbit passage. Only 4.2 percent of the metacercariae gained after one rabbit passage developed to adult F. hepatica in sheep, whereas the respective percentage after sheep passage was 51.2 percent. It can be calculated that after rabbit passage 4.5 liver flukes develop from 100 F. hepatica eggs as compared with 2,141.3 parasites after sheep pas

Pathobiochemical mechanisms involved in the control of the disease caused by Trypanosoma congolense in African grey duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia).

The course of Trypanosoma congolense infections in African grey duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia) and sheep and goats were studied. Several parameters suggested that the grey duiker was much more resistant to trypanosomosis than sheep and goats. They showed increases in weight during infection, had a much longer pre-patent period, and their peak parasitaemia levels were about 100-fold lower than those of sheep and goats. Parasites were no longer detected in grey duiker blood 35 days after infection. Anaemia, measured as drops in packed cell volume (PCV), haemoglobin (Hb) concentration and erythrocyt

Cross-neutralization of leptospiral hemolysins from different serotypes.

Cross-neutralization studies on leptospiral hemolysins from strains of two antigenically different serotypes, pomona and canicola, were conducted in sheep. A third strain of serotype hardjo that does not produce hemolysin and is antigenically distinct was included for control purposes. Concentrated hemolysins, prepared from supernatant fluids of canicola or pomona cultures, produced hemolytic anemia in sheep after intravenous injection. Sheep previously infected with hemolysin-producing strains were refractory to effects of homologous or heterologous hemolysins. On the other hand, infection wi

Influence of attractants on behavior of screwworms (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in a tropical wet forest in Costa Rica.

In a mark-release-recapture study, sheep wounds and rotted liver were used as attractants to study movements of the screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), in a Costa Rican tropical wet forest in the wet season. When sites were monitored for less than 1 h, liver attracted between 3 and 12.2 times more flies of both sexes than did wounds, but proportionately fewer gravid and parous females. Only 24.6% of females marked at liver sites were recaptured; seldom (3.1%) did they visit sheep wounds. Females originally marked at sheep wounds remained at the study site longer, visited both sh

Transmission dynamics of brucellosis with patch model: Shanxi and Hebei Provinces as cases.

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Brucella, and it is an important infectious disease all over the world. The prevalence of brucellosis in the Chinese mainland has some spatial characteristics besides the temporal trend in recent years. Due to the large-scale breeding of sheep and the frequent transportation of sheep in various regions, brucellosis spreads wantonly in pastoral areas, and human brucellosis spreads from traditional pastoral areas and semi-pastoral areas in the north to non-pastoral areas with low incidence in the south. In order to study the influence of sheep immigrat
