OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare grief among parents who had an adult child with schizophrenia and parents who had "lost" an adult child through death or a head injury that resulted in an organic personality disorder.
METHOD: Twenty-five parents from each group were studied. Self-report scales that assessed grief, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse were administered.
RESULTS: There were significant differences with regard to grieving reactions and substance abuse. The parents with schizophrenic children had more ongoing grieving, and the parents of children with head

During the past 8 years there has been substantial progress in our understanding of the structure, distribution and action of endogenous opioid peptides. Currently, there appear to be 2 groups of peptides; those derived from beta-lipotropin and an enkephalin-related group. Some of these peptides have been shown to be distributed widely in the central nervous system and in endocrine tissues. The activity of the peptides probably occurs at several receptors but only 1 relatively specific (mu-receptor) antagonist, naloxone, is well studies. Although there have been many clinical studies of the ac

Cannabis use disorder (CUD) affects ~22-million people globally and is characterised by difficulties in cutting down and quitting use, but the underlying neurobiology remains unclear. We examined resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) between regions of interest (ROIs) of the addiction neurocircuitry and the rest of the brain in 65 individuals with moderate-to-severe CUD who reported attempts to cut down or quit, compared to 42 controls, and explored the association between rsFC and cannabis exposure and related problems, to elucidate potential drivers of rsFC alterations. The CUD group

Emotion processing difficulties are observed in antisocial individuals exhibiting serious antisocial behavior. This study examined emotion processing in 40 male juvenile offenders (JOs) and 52 male controls by measuring startle reflex responses to aversive sounds during the passive viewing of affective and neutral images. JOs as a group exhibited reduced startle-elicited blinks across all slide categories compared to normal controls. Moreover, within the offender group those with more conduct disorder symptoms and higher levels of psychopathic traits displayed reduced startle amplitudes compar

OBJECTIVE: To examine characteristics of patients with social phobia (SP) in alcohol and drug treatment settings and to identify features distinguishing this group from patients with and without other psychiatric conditions.
METHOD: A random sample of 105 patients completing an initial assessment at two outpatient alcohol and drug treatment services were assessed and agreed to a 9 month follow-up interview, completed by n=102 (97%). At baseline the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) was administered. Current diagnoses at baseline were used to separate the sample into those wi

Biofilms are microbial communities established in the self-produced extracellular substances that include up to 80% of associated microbial infections. During biofilm formation, bacterial cells shift from the planktonic forms to aggregated forms surrounded by an extracellular polymeric substance. The bacterial biofilm shows resistance against immune reactions as well as antibiotics and is potentially able to cause disorders by both device-related and nondevice-related infections. The nondevice-related bacterial biofilm infections include dental plaque, urinary tract infections, cystic fibrosis

Experiencing combat-related trauma can contribute to the development of conditions like posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression, often leading some veterans to misuse substances as a coping mechanism. In turn, substance use exacerbates mental health issues and increases the risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Military identity, a unique set of values, culture, and camaraderie within the Armed Forces, is hypothesized to further shape these relationships. Using data from 1,459 U.S. military Veterans, we examined whether three dimensions of military identity - idealism, professi

Psychedelic substances have shown preliminary efficacy for several neuropsychiatric disorders and are currently being investigated for chronic pain conditions. However, few studies have investigated outcomes of naturalistic psychedelic use among individuals with chronic pain, and none have assessed psychedelic-related changes in substance use patterns in this population. In a cross-sectional survey of adults who reported using psychedelics to self-treat a chronic pain condition (n = 466; 46.1% women), we investigated changed substance use patterns and self-reported outcomes on physical and men

Background: Transgender persons in the U.S. experience high levels of violence and discrimination which have been linked to adverse substance use outcomes. Despite transgender women's higher exposure to such deleterious events compared to transgender men, studies have often aggregated both transgender women and men, obfuscating potentially unique differences between these groups. The current study, guided by the Minority Stress Model, examines differences in substance use outcomes and related correlates among transfeminine and transmasculine adults. Methods: A secondary data analysis was condu

In the awake restrained rat the intrathecal administration of substance P or the partial substance P homologue eledoisin-related peptide (ERP) reduced reaction time to a noxious radiant heat stimulus and, at high doses, produced additional behavioural responses suggesting that the animals had reacted to what they perceived as a painful stimulus. The reduction in tail-flick latency was observed as early as 30 sec following peptide administration peaked at 1 min and persisted for 5-10 min, after which an overshoot of the response (i.e., an increase in reaction time) was observed. The responses v

BACKGROUND: Iran has developed the most robust harm reduction infrastructure in the Middle East, marked by availability of low threshold methadone maintenance treatment (MMT), needle and syringe program (NSPs), and condom distribution services. However, little is known about the socially situated risk factors that make harm reduction clients-specifically those enrolled in MMT-vulnerable to relapse or continued illicit drug use. In this study, we sought to understand the "risk environment" of clients enrolled in harm reduction services in Tehran, Iran.
METHODS: Through observation and in-depth

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Gender differences have been reported in adult substance users, but little research has examined gender differences in adolescents presenting to treatment services. This study aimed to explore gender differences in adolescents presenting to a withdrawal service.
DESIGN AND METHODS: All presentations to a withdrawal service between March 2000 and September 2004 were identified. For each presentation, the following information was extracted from clinical databases: sociodemographics, drug use, risk-taking behaviour, mental health symptoms, reasons and context of drug use.

The use of accreditation has been widespread among medical care providers, but accreditation is relatively new to the drug abuse treatment field. This study presents estimates of the costs of pursuing accreditation for methadone treatment sites. Data are from 102 methadone treatment sites that underwent accreditation as part of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment's evaluation of the Opioid Treatment Program Accreditation Project. The analysis represents the most comprehensive analysis of the costs of pursuing accreditation by a health care provider. Importantly, it is the first analysis o

Polysubstance use is a major public health concern affecting lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults, especially bisexual female adults. This study aims to identify the commonly used polysubstance combinations by LGB adults in the past 30 days and to determine whether these combinations differ by sexual identity and sex. Our analytic sample consisted of NSDUH 2021 and 2022 (n = 66,634 adults; 8.59% LGB adults). We used survey-weighted multinomial logistic regression models to assess the polysubstance combinations by sex. The most used substances were binge alcohol drinking, cannabis, cigarette

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the clinical evolution of Belgian individuals following an inpatient treatment for substance use disorder (SUD), based on the presence or absence of alexithymia, as defined by difficulties in emotional identification and expression.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to examine differences in clinical evolution during inpatient SUD treatment between individuals with high versus low levels of alexithymia. Among 119 inpatients, 92 were classified into two groups based on TAS-20 scores: a high-alexithymia group (n1 = 51, 42.86%, TAS-20 > 60) and a low

BACKGROUND: The term "Deaths of Despair" (DoD) refers to mortality due to alcohol consumption, drug use, and suicides. While extensively studied in the United States, where these deaths have markedly increased, less is known about their patterns in other contexts. This study explores the relevance of this concept to Italy, a country with comparatively lower rates, to determine whether these causes of death exhibit common trends and can be meaningfully grouped under a single category.
METHODS: We use cause-specific mortality data from the Italian National Institute of Statistics covering the p

Recent scholarship in Mexico has examined the intersection between the War on Drugs, drug-related violence, and schooling, revealing significant impacts on the educational experiences of young people. My study deepens this focus to the peripheries of Mexico City, where the expansion of the drug market and marginalization shape neighborhoods' everyday life. Situated in a community school that serves primarily working-class families, this study analyzes how teachers and school administrators perceive the risks of student drug use and distribution, as well as the strategies the school enacts to r

The burden of alcohol and substance use disorder is disproportionately high among patients with burn injuries and portends worse clinical outcomes. The Cut down, Annoyed, Guilty, and Eye-opener (CAGE) questionnaire is a validated 4-question screen for alcohol and drug use. This study aimed to identify demographic and clinical variables that predict positive CAGE screens or negative-to-positive screen conversion in burn survivors and to examine psychosocial and functional outcomes. The Burn Model System database was used to assess characteristics of patients with burn injuries who completed a C

PURPOSE: Incarcerated people have been identified as a vulnerable population prone to health risk behaviors (HRBs). This study aims to compare a set of HRBs in Portuguese incarcerated males with a community-matched control group and explore the influence of social-emotional competences and self-control on these behaviors. The authors expect that incarcerated males would present more HRBs in comparison to the community sample.
DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The study included 573 participants (312 incarcerated males and 251 males from the community).
FINDINGS: Incarcerated males exhibited highe
