Single-stage Distal Radius Dome Osteotomy with Ulnar Diaphyseal Shortening and Distal Ulnar Epiphysiodesis in A Case of Manus Valgus Deformity Secondary to Post-Traumatic Physeal Growth Arrest - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Distal radius physeal growth arrest in children secondary to trauma is a rare complication. Various modalities of surgical treatment exist. Correction of severe deformity by a single-stage surgery is rare in current literature. We describe a case of surgically treated posttraumatic manus valgus deformity in an adolescent female with a satisfactory surgical outcome. CASE REPORT: A 13-year-old right-hand dominant girl presented to us with a painless, gradually progressive left wrist deformity for the past 3 years. She sustained a left wrist injury 3.5 years back for which she rece

Congenital unilateral proximal radioulnar synostosis: A surgical case report.

RATIONALE: Congenital proximal radioulnar synostosis is a rare genetic malformation of the upper limb. This deformity, which is found mainly in preschool-aged children, has no recognized diagnosis and treatment. Current diagnostic methods cannot effectively assess both bone structure and soft tissue abnormalities, and most surgical treatments introduce complications and do not prevent recurrence. More work is needed; therefore, to address the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. PATIENT CONCERNS: An 8-year-old male patient was hospitalized in our department. He reported deformity and limi

Open reduction and internal fixation of humeral midshaft fractures: anterior versus posterior plate fixation.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the humeral shaft represent 2-4% of all fractures. Fractures of the humerus have traditionally been approached posteriorly for open reduction and internal fixation. Reports of treating midshaft fractures with an open anterolateral approach and anterior plating are limited. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a series of humeral shaft fractures treated with plate osteosynthesis regarding the effect of the approach and plate location on the healing rate and occurrence of complications. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients aged over 18 yea

Long-term survival of patients with critical limb ischemia treated with iloprost: response rate and predictive criteria. A retrospective analysis of 102 patients.

OBJECTIVE: Critical limb ischemia (CLI) patients have poor long-term prognosis. We showed that iloprost improves outcomes (major amputation and survival) up a 5-year follow-up, but it is not known if in this length of time the survival curves, of clinical responders and non-responders, differ. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study enrolling 102 consecutive patients between 2004-2008, with clinical and instrumental (ultrasound, angiography, transcutaneous tensiometry of oxygen TcpO2 and carbon dioxide TcpCO2 in the affected and contralateral limbs) diagnosis of critical ischemia. Syndesmotic fixation in supination-external rotation ankle fractures: a prospective randomized study.

BACKGROUND: This study compared mid-term functional and radiologic results of syndesmotic transfixation with no fixation in supination external rotation (SER) ankle fractures with intraoperatively confirmed syndesmosis disruption. Our hypothesis was that early-stage good functional results would remain and unfixed syndesmosis disruption in SER IV ankle fractures would not lead to an increased incidence of osteoarthritis. METHODS: A prospective study of 140 operatively treated patients with Lauge-Hansen SER IV (Weber B) ankle fractures was performed. After bony fixation, the 7.5-Nm standardize

The value of plain abdominal radiographs in management of abdominal emergencies in Luth.

OBJECTIVE: The plain abdominal x-ray is still the first imaging modality in diagnosis of acute abdomen. The aim of this study was to find the value of plain abdominal x-ray in the management of abdominal emergencies seen in Lagos university teaching hospital. BACKGROUND: The accurate diagnosis of the cause of acute abdominal pain is one of the most challenging undertakings in emergency medicine. This is due to overlapping of clinical presentation and non-specific findings of physical and even laboratory data of the multifarious causes. Plain abdominal radiography is one investigation that can

Peritoneoscopic placement of Swan neck peritoneal dialysis catheters.

Peritoneoscopic placement of peritoneal dialysis catheters, although accomplished in only about 10% of dialysis centers, is a nonsurgical technique that fulfills requirements for safety and dependability. Over a 40-month period, 136 catheters were placed with the peritoneoscope, 135 of which were double-cuffed, Swan neck curled catheters, with a uniform radiopaque stripe. Patients were followed longitudinally for outcome. Catheters were placed in 44 diabetic patients, 1 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patient, and 18 morbidly obese patients. No complications occurred as a direct re

Hyper-buoyancy flotation increases cervical disc height and reduces vertebral stiffness, with only partial reversal after acute 1 g axial loading.

Exposure to microgravity is associated with stature increases, moderate-to-severe back/neck pain and elevated lumbar and cervical intervertebral disc (IVD) herniation risk post-flight. Whilst lumbar pathophysiology has been investigated, little attention has been placed on the cervical spine. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of 4 h of hyper-buoyancy flotation (HBF) and subsequent 15 min of upright 1 g exposure on stature, cervical IVD height, cervical muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and thickness, passive cervical vertebral stiffness, and their association with stature

[Restoration of upper-limb function in patients with cervical spinal cord lesion].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Injury to the spinal chord at the C5 level results in a severe handicap to the patient because of a loss of active motion of the wrist and hand. Selected surgical procedures can effectively restore active extension of the wrist and provide conditions for some vital pinching and gripping abilities. The deltoid muscle also has a potential for restoration of upper limb function, because its posterior portion can be used to restore elbow extension. The aim of this clinical retrospective study was to describe and evaluate the techniques used to improve the quality of life in p

Hip Decompression with Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate and Platelet-Rich Plasma Injection for Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head.

BACKGROUND: Hip decompression effectively treats early-stage osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) by slowing disease progression and potentially delaying joint replacement. Biological adjuvants like bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) support bone regeneration and improve outcomes1-7. The present video article demonstrates a simple, coreless hip decompression technique with BMAC and PRP injection for early-stage ONFH. DESCRIPTION: The procedure is performed in the same operating room setting as traditional core decompression, with the patient supine on a

Open Release of Pediatric Trigger Thumb.

UNLABELLED: Open release of a trigger thumb has been shown to be the most reliable option to restore full interphalangeal (IP) joint extension and thus normal thumb-joint motion in children1. The aim of this procedure is to restore free gliding of the flexor pollicis longus (FPL) tendon in its canal in children with fixed IP joint flexion contractures or those in whom nonoperative treatment modalities have failed. DESCRIPTION: The surgical procedure is easy to perform and straightforward; however, attention must be given to several details in order to avoid surgical failure and complications.

Repositioning for pressure injury prevention in adults.

RATIONALE: Pressure injuries (or pressure ulcers) are localised damage to skin or tissue (or both) occurring over bony prominences, resulting from prolonged pressure or shear forces (or both). Adults receiving care in any healthcare setting can develop pressure injuries. Immobility, malnutrition, and reduced sensation are some known risk factors. Regular repositioning is a theoretically sound prevention strategy that is part of standard patient care. This is the second update of a review published in 2014 and updated in 2020. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms, and cost-effectiven

Paediatric Sternoclavicular Joint Pseudodislocation Fixation Technique.

BACKGROUND: Posterior sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) injuries in children are rare and frequently misdiagnosed. Due to the anatomy of the immature medial clavicle, many of these injuries are Salter-Harris type I/II physeal fractures rather than true joint dislocations-termed pseudodislocations. These injuries require careful diagnosis and tailored management to ensure safe and functional outcomes. INDICATIONS: Surgical intervention is indicated in paediatric SCJ pseudodislocations with significant posterior displacement of the medial clavicular fragment, particularly when the posterior metaphys
