Questionnaires assessing a range of quality of life (QOL) outcomes were completed by 200 adult bone marrow transplant (BMT) recipients from five BMT treatment centres. Respondents had undergone allogeneic (46%) or autologous BMT (54%) for a haematological malignancy and were disease free and at least 12 months post BMT (mean 43 months). Variability in post-BMT QOL was reported with deficits in physical, sexual and occupational functioning particularly likely. Allogeneic recipients reported poorer QOL than autologous recipients. Greater age at BMT, lower level of education and more advanced dis

We report the case of a 25-year-old depressed woman who committed suicide with a starter's pistol loaded with CS tear-gas ammunition. The propellant gases of the contact shot entered her chest through the left sixth intercostal space. Exsanguination was caused by perforations of the pericardium and apex of the heart. Autopsy did not reveal any metallic or other foreign bodies that might have originated from the propellant, the cartridge, or any bulletlike material. Her injuries were thus caused by the propellant alone. 0.5 mg L-1 of the CS degradation product cyanide was detected in the cardia

PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the distances and angles on basal turn of cochlea in relation to round window at which the jugular bulb, internal carotid artery and facial nerve are at maximal risk and their implications in cochlear implantation (CI).
METHODS: Fifty-four cadaveric temporal bones were microdissected to expose the basal turn of cochlea, the carotid canal, the facial canal and the jugular fossa. The points were marked on the basal turn of cochlea, where there was minimum distance of basal turn of cochlea from the roof of the jugular fossa (point a), ca

OBJECTIVE: Although prolonged use of antibiotics is very common in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients, no studies have assessed the changes in both cochlear and peripheral vestibular systems in this population.
METHODS: We used human temporal bones to analyze the density of vestibular dark, transitional, and hair cells in specimens from CF patients who were exposed to several types of antibiotics, as compared with specimens from an age-matched control group with no history of ear disease or antibiotic use. Additionally, we analyzed the changes in the elements of the cochlea (hair cells, spiral gan

BACKGROUND: The microsurgical management of aneurysms in the interpeduncular and ambient cisterns remains challenging. The classic subtemporal approach has several limitations.
OBJECTIVE: To present a modification of this approach that allows for broader exposure with hearing preservation.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed our clinical database between August 2007 and February 2012 for all patients who underwent a modified subtemporal partial posterosuperior petrosectomy. Clinical data, complications, and postoperative head computed tomography (CT) scans were analyzed. Improvement in the

BACKGROUND: Eagle syndrome is often considered in the work-up of odynophagia and neck pain. Classically, this is manifested by ossification or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament or styloid process. There are no reported cases of stylopharyngeal calcification leading to these symptoms.
CASE: We describe a patient with a suspected submucosal pharyngeal foreign body who was found to have a calcified stylopharyngeus muscle and tendon during surgery. The patient experienced full resolution of symptoms after transoral robotic resection. This diagnosis was initially missed because the radiolog

AIM: To report on a patient with Eagle's syndrome with a complete and very large ossification of the stylohyoid complex on the right side that to our best knowledge has never been published previously.
BACKGROUND: Eagle's syndrome is characterized by a set of symptoms that are caused by the irritation of the neurovascular and soft-tissues caused by an elongated styloid process or ossification of stylohyoid ligament.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Because of the high discomfort and pain degree as well as limitations of mandibular and head mobility and also the thickness of the ossifed stylohyoid chain, th

UNLABELLED: This study determines the frequency and relationship between disk position and degenerative bone changes in temporomandibular joints in children and adolescent patients with internal derangement. Study design: TMJ, MRI of 88 patients were analyzed (average age: 14.7 years-old, range age: 10-18 years-old), female n = 65 (73.9%) and male n = 23 (26.1%). Images obtained were used to determine the frequency of disk position, joint effusion (JE) and degenerative bone changes (OA). Images were assessed by a calibrated radiologist (Kappa = 0.82).
RESULTS: No significant association was f

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between unilateral temporomandibular joint (TMJ) sounds and craniofacial asymmetry, using 3D-computed tomography (CT) measurements.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Forty-one reconstructed 3D-CT models of adult subjects were measured to analyze craniofacial asymmetry. Subjects were divided into two groups depending on the presence (n = 20) or absence (n = 21) of unilateral joint sounds, and the results compared using the Mann-Whitney U-test. To investigate the association between these parameters, the Pearson correlation

We report the case of a female who had suffered from progressive lymphatic malformation in the orbito-temporal region since childhood. Many surgical interventions were performed, including radical excision and shunt drainage. Despite aggressive surgical treatment, recurrence was observed after every intervention. Eventually, the condition regressed after the patient began taking a contraceptive. Moreover, it virtually disappeared after pregnancy.

The authors present the case of a 76-year-old male who presented with right-sided recurrent malignant otitis externa (MOE) and skull-base osteomyelitis. His management involved aggressive antimicrobial therapy and multiple hyperbaric oxygen treatments. After resolution of his right-sided infection, the patient returned a short time later with symptoms and findings consistent with new, left-sided MOE with involvement of the left skull-base. With repeat treatment, the patient is now cured of his infection but poses a challenge to the treating team about future management.

PURPOSE: Nonvestibular cranial nerve schwannomas (NVCNS) are relatively rare tumors. We evaluated our experience with radiosurgical and microsurgical treatment alone and in combination for the management of NVCNS.
METHODS: The charts of 62 patients with NVCNS who were treated between 1993 and 2005 at our institution were reviewed. Patients diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 2 were excluded. The patients underwent microsurgery and/or radiosurgery treatment.
RESULTS: Trigeminal and jugular foramen schwannomas were the most common NVCNS tumors (n = 47), and the only two groups with sufficien
