Enamel defects and Lyonization in focal dermal hypoplasia.

We report a pattern of enamel hypoplasia in focal dermal hypoplasia similar to that found in females with X-linked amelogenesis imperfecta. Three cases of focal dermal hypoplasia are described, with specific focus on the oral and dental features. In these cases the teeth all had vertical grooving with notching of the incisal or cuspal tips. Also recorded were blunt roots of taurodont form with open apices and missing teeth in 1 case. Oral papillomas were present in 2 cases. The pattern of enamel defects is attributed to Lyonization, which is consistent with the pattern of skin and bone lesions

Oral and dental manifestations of vitamin D-dependent rickets type I: report of a pediatric case.

Vitamin D-dependent rickets type I (VDDRI) represents an autosomal recessive hereditary defect in vitamin D metabolism. Patients with VDDRI have mutations of chromosome 12 that affect the gene for the enzyme 1-alpha-hydroxylase, resulting in decreased levels of 1,25(OH)(2) vitamin D. Clinical features include growth failure, hypotonia, weakness, rachitic rosary, convulsions, tetany, open fontanels, and pathologic fractures. The oral and dental manifestations of VDDRI have not been described. Here we present the case of a 10-year-old girl affected by VDDRI, as established by the combination of

The effect of systemic tetracycline on resorption of dried replanted dogs' teeth.

The use of systemic penicillin after an avulsion injury has been recommended to decrease the occurrence of resorption complications. Tetracycline antibiotics have been reported to possess anti-resorptive properties in addition to their anti-microbial actions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate histologically the effect of systemically administered tetracycline and amoxicillin on the inhibition of resorption due to attachment damage after replantation of dogs' teeth. Thirty-one roots from the teeth of four beagle dogs were endodontically treated to inhibit subsequent inflammatory root re

A long-term, follow-up, radiographic evaluation of asymptomatic impacted third molars in orthodontically treated patients.

Long-term follow-up orthopantomographs of 251 adult orthodontically treated former patients showed 113 clinically asymptomatic impacted third molars in 58 patients. Radiographic assessment revealed contact of impacted third molars with the second molars, resorption of maxillary and mandibular second molars, as well as pathologically widened pericoronal spaces of the maxillary and mandibular third molars. The comparison of the sagittal third molar position in 52 impacted teeth revealed a sagittal change in all third molars from post-treatment to follow-up: maxillary and mandibular third molars

A visualized AI-assisted framework for pre-surgical evaluation of implant pathways on periapical radiographs.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Implant pathway assessment is a crucial part of pre-operative planning before performing implant surgery at the site of a missing tooth. Dentists frequently use the periapical radiograph (PA) as a tool for preliminary evaluation of the implant pathway. However, the manual interpretation process is time-consuming and inherently subjective, making it susceptible to variations in PA-based implant pathway judgment due to the operator's experience. This study aims to establish an automated and objective framework that integrates an algorithm and deep learning to analyze the impl

Diagnosis and surgical management of impacted mandibular canines associated with a dentigerous cyst and odontoma: A case report.

In dental practice, impacted canines are common clinical conditions that compromise tooth mobility, thereby severely affecting functionality and esthetics. They also represent a significant challenge, particularly when associated with odontogenic pathologies such as dentigerous cysts and odontomas. These entities, despite benign, can cause complications, including tooth displacement, root resorption, and alterations in normal eruption, compromising both esthetics and function. We present the case of a 15-year-old female patient with no relevant medical history who attended for orthodontic trea

Treatments of dentition with four dens evaginatus and reverse overbite: a case report with a 6-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Dens evaginatus is a dental anomaly characterized by a conical cusp or tubercle on the occlusal surface. It is generally believed to be caused by the protrusion of the dental papilla toward the enamel organ during odontogenesis, followed by the formation of enamel, dentin, and dental pulp. Owing to the abrasion of the occlusal surface, the protrusive cusp will be quickly worn off, uncovering the dental pulp tissue and thereby giving rise to pulpal or periapical disorders in the affected tooth. Abnormal occlusion can also exert an impetus in facilitating the wear process of dens eva

Comparison of computed tomographic findings for radiolucent lesions of the mandibular ameloblastoma, odontogenic keratocyst, dentigerous cyst, and simple bone cyst.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Radiolucent lesions of the mandible, including ameloblastoma, odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), dentigerous cyst (DC) and simple bone cyst (SBC), are frequently encountered in clinical practice. However, they vary in type and occasionally in appearance. Each lesion needs a different treatment and approach; therefore, accurate diagnosis is crucial before treatment. However, the radiographic findings, including computed tomography (CT), are often similar. This study aimed to compare the CT findings of 41 ameloblastomas, 74 OKCs, 87 DCs, and 13 SBCs in the mandible. MATERIALS AND

Dysbiosis revisited: Understanding the role of the oral microbiome in the pathogenesis of gingivitis and periodontitis: A critical assessment.

This commentary provides background, historical context, and a critical assessment of the concept that microbial dysbiosis drives the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. It is long known that periodontal pathogenesis is dependent on tooth-borne microbial biofilms (dental plaque) that trigger host inflammation resulting in periodontal destruction and tooth loss in some patients. Ecological principles governing plaque biofilm development, along with localized host responses, are both rooted in evolution. Interpretation of available evidence suggests that, in most patients, alveolar bone loss r

Finite Element Analysis of Stress in Maxillary Dentition during En-masse Retraction with Implant Anchorage.

The goal of this study was to investigate how the height of the archwire hook and implant anchor affect tooth movement, stress in the teeth and alveolar bone, and the center of resistance during retraction of the entire maxillary dentition using a multibracket system. Computed tomography was used to scan a dried adult human skull with normal occlusion. Three-dimensional models of the maxillary bone, teeth, brackets, archwire, hook, and implant anchor were created and used for finite element analysis. The heights of the hook and the implant anchor were set at 0, 5, or 10 mm from the archwire. O

Evaluation of the marginal integrity of a bioactive restorative material.

This in vitro study evaluated the marginal microleakage of a bioactive restorative with other restorative materials in standard Class V preparations. Sixty previously extracted, noncarious human molars were randomly assigned to 3 experimental groups (n = 20): a bioactive composite resin, a universal hybrid composite resin, and a resin-modified glass ionomer restorative. Class V cavities were prepared on the facial or lingual surface of each tooth so that coronal margins were located in enamel and apical margins in cementum (dentin). After the cavity preparations were restored with the appropri

Dentigerous Cyst and Ameloblastoma of the Jaws.

AIM: To determine how many ameloblastomas were misdiagnosed as dentigerous cysts (DCs) by correlating the radiological and histopathological features of a series of both entities. METHODS AND RESULTS: Histopathology reports and radiological imaging of 135 DCs and 43 ameloblastomas were reviewed. Any clinical or radiological feature that suggested that the diagnosis of DC was wrong-for example, absence of an unerupted tooth-prompted review of the original histology. A total of 34 cases coded as DC at diagnosis were excluded; in the remaining 101 patients, the clinicoradiological and histopatho

Effects of Activin A on the phenotypic properties of human periodontal ligament cells.

Periodontal ligament (PDL) tissue plays an important role in tooth preservation by structurally maintaining the connection between the tooth root and the bone. The mechanisms involved in the healing and regeneration of damaged PDL tissue, caused by bacterial infection, caries and trauma, have been explored. Accumulating evidence suggests that Activin A, a member of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily and a dimer of inhibinβa, contributes to tissue healing through cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation of various target cells. In bone, Activin A has been shown to ex

Orthodontically stressed periodontium of transgenic mouse as a model for studying mechanical response in bone: The effect on the number of osteoblasts.

A better understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in response to mechanical stress is a prerequisite for future improvements in orthodontic treatment. To expand the application of molecular biology techniques in this area of research, we developed and characterized a mouse tooth movement model. The aim of this study was to biomechanically characterize this model and to evaluate the effect of orthodontic stress on the proliferation of periodontal osteoblasts. We used an orthodontic coil spring appliance with a low force/deflection rate, which produced an average force of 10-1
