Eighty-two patients with pathologically proved carcinoid tumors were examined with iodine-131 metaio-dobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy. Localization scores of I-131 MIBG accumulation in the primary tumor or metastatic site ranged from 0 to 3+ on the basis of comparison with normal liver. I-131 MIBG uptake varied greatly in different patients with carcinoid tumors. The localization scores in known tumor sites were related to the location of the primary tumor in the stomach (1-3+ in two of five patients), pancreas (1-3+ in four of five patients), cecum (3+ in two of two patients), appendix (

OBJECTIVES: Appendiceal orifice lesions are occasionally detected during colonoscopy in patients with recurrent appendicitis. Conventional surgery with partial cecal resection may cause unnecessary trauma. Transcolonic endoscopic appendectomy (TEA) has been proposed as a minimally invasive alternative. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of transcolonic endoscopic appendectomy and to compare through-the-scope twin clips (TTS-TC) combined with metal clips versus metal clips alone for defect closure.
METHODS: Twenty patients with recurrent appendicitis and no prior abdomi

PURPOSE: Antegrade continence enema (ACE) appendicostomy is widely used in children with complex colorectal and neurogenic bowel conditions, yet data from resource-constrained settings remain limited. We aimed to describe the experience of a single-center pediatric cohort in a low-middle-income country (LMIC).
METHODS: A retrospective review of all ACE procedures performed between 2012 and 2026 was conducted. Demographics, diagnoses, indications, complications, surgeries, and functional outcomes (assessed with Milan Bowel Function Questionnaire) were collected from clinical and operative reco

INTRODUCTION: As the nonoperative management of acute appendicitis becomes more widespread, identifying patients at high risk of appendiceal tumors is increasingly important. This study aimed to clarify the predictive factors of appendiceal tumors before appendectomy.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 434 patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis who underwent emergency or interval appendectomy.
RESULTS: Appendiceal neoplasms were found in 3.9% of patients. Patients with tumors were significantly older (64.4 vs. 49.6 years, p < 0.001). The tumor group exhibited a lower appendicolith inci

BACKGROUND: There is ongoing controversy concerning the indications and benefits of early postoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy (EPIC) following cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intra-peritoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in patients with pseudomyxoma peritonei. The main contra-indications preventing wide-spread use of EPIC are reports of an increased postoperative morbidity with no clear evidence of oncological benefit. This paper reports a single high volume institution experience with EPIC over a 25-year period.
METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of a single institution p

AIMS: We aimed to evaluate the correlation between Alvarado scoring and ultrasonographic findings in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis and its role in reduction of the rate of negative appendectomy.
METHODS: A total of 2772 patients operated between January 2010 and September 2016 with the presumed diagnosis of acute appendicitis were retrospectively evaluated. Patients with appendicitis detected in histopathologic examination were assessed as Group 1, and those with no appendicitis detected were assessed as Group 2.
RESULTS: The rate of negative appendectomy was 5.3%. Alvarado score was ≥

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1, Von Recklinghausen disease) is an autosomal dominant disease with a birth incidence of 1/2500-3000. The most common presentations of NF1 are cutaneous presentations like café-au-lait spots and neurofibromas. 5%-25% of patients with NF1 have gastrointestinal manifestations of the disease. Appendiceal neurofibroma are extremely rare and only a few cases are described in literature. An appendectomy is indicated because of high risk of appendicitis and malignant transformation. We report the case of a 74-year-old male patient with a history of NF1 with chronic right

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the histopathological findings in appendectomy materials with E. vermicularis infection.
METHODS: Appendectomy materials with E. vermicularis infection of 24 cases were evaluated for the presence of acute inflammation, congestion, hemorrhage, perforation, lymphoid hyperplasia (LH), necrosis, granuloma, fecalith, obliteration, hyalinization, eosinophilic infiltration and mucosal architectural distortion.
RESULTS: The frequency of E. vermicularis among 3222 appendectomies that were scanned for the study was 0.74% (24/3222). Female: male ratio was 1:1 and the median age w

To investigate which clinical, laboratory, and CT findings potentially facilitate the differential diagnosis between tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA) and periappendicular abscess (PAA), we retrospectively reviewed abdominal CT examinations and medical records for all women who presented to our medical center with unilateral right pelvic abscess formation who underwent CT evaluation from 2004-2014. A wide spectrum of clinical data and imaging findings were recorded. CT diagnoses were made in consensus by two experienced body radiologists blinded to the final diagnosis. Findings associated with the in

BACKGROUND: Non-operative management may be an alternative for uncomplicated appendicitis, but preoperative distinction between uncomplicated and complicated disease is challenging. This study aimed to develop a scoring system based on clinical and imaging features to distinguish uncomplicated from complicated appendicitis.
METHODS: Patients with suspected acute appendicitis based on clinical evaluation and imaging were selected from two prospective multicentre diagnostic accuracy studies (OPTIMA and OPTIMAP). Features associated with complicated appendicitis were included in multivariable lo

BACKGROUND: Enterobius vermicularis is an often unexpected finding in appendectomy specimen, most commonly seen in paediatric cases. Predicting the presence of E. vermicularis in the setting of appendectomy is important to avoid unnecessary appendectomy and associated morbidity. We sought to identify the incidence of E. vermicularis in a paediatric population undergoing appendectomy for clinically suspected acute appendicitis and identify predictive factors for E. vermicularis.
METHODS: This study was performed in an 800-bed University Teaching Hospital, in the Republic of Ireland. We identif

Acute appendicitis is a common cause for pediatric surgery, with an increasing incidence as this population ages. Pseudomembranous colitis (PMC) from Clostridum difficle is being seen more frequently in pediatric patients, especially after treatment with antibiotics and in those with Hirschsprung's disease. Only three prior cases of appendicitis associated with PMC have been described in the literature, and all of them occurred in adult patients. Here, we describe the first documented pediatric case: a 16-year-old female who developed acute appendicitis while concomitantly being treated for su

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The management of children who have congenital intestinal dysfunction and continuous feces soiling has been improved significantly by the Malone continent caecostomy. When the appendix is not available, the Monti tube represents a good alternative to create a catheterizable conduit. The authors report here 7 cases of left continent colonic access (left Monti-Malone).
METHODS: From July 1999 to January 2001 7 patients have been operated on in our unit: 6 spina bifida, 1 cloacal exstrophy. Technically, a ring of descending colon of 1.5 to 2 cm width is isolated with its meso

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The purpose of this study was to define in a routine setting the role of spiral computed tomography in patients with suspected acute appendicitis and to determine the effect of computed tomography on the treatment of such patients.
METHODOLOGY: Appendiceal computed tomography was performed in 120 consecutive patients with acute appendicitis in the differential diagnosis, whose clinical findings were insufficient to perform surgery or to discharge from the hospital. Each scan was obtained in a single breath hold from the lower abdomen to the upper pelvis using a 5-mm collimati

Appendico-vesical fistula is a rare condition. In total, 109 cases, most secondary to appendicitis, have been reported in the English-language literature. We report the first case, to our knowledge, of appendico-ileo-vesical fistula secondary to appendiceal diverticulitis. An enterovesical fistula was diagnosed by urine culture, cystoscopy, and computed tomography. The locations of enteric opening sites were demonstrated by barium enema and colonoscopy. Ileocecal resection and fistulectomy with primary reconstruction were performed. We believe that accurate pre- and intra-operative diagnosis i

Appendectomy was performed on 1,059 children at the University Clinic of Paediatric Surgery in Mainz from 1. 1. 1975 to 31. 6. 1983. For the retrospective examination of the indication for appendectomy histopathological and intraoperative findings were analysed and evaluated. Histologically five types of appendicitis were differentiated: 1. acute appendicitis (two forms: acute ulcero-phlegmonous appendicitis with or without perforation and acute superficial appendicitis), 2. chronic appendicitis, 3. lymphatic hyperplasia, 4. submucosal fibrosis, 5. rare diseases. In 618 cases (= 58.3%) acute a

Appendicovesical fistula is a rare complication of unrecognized appendicitis. Only 99 previous cases have been reported in the literature. We reviewed these cases and contribute an additional one with hope that increased awareness of this entity may facilitate the correct diagnosis and avoid inappropriate management.
