This study compared the clinical outcomes, graft quality, and graft quantity after alveolar bone grafting with and without a resorbable collagen membrane. Twenty unilateral cleft patients undergoing defect repair with cancellous iliac bone were assigned to either the collagen membrane group (Mb group) or standard group without a membrane (St group). Postoperative pain and swelling, bone density, and bone volume and quality were assessed. The Mb group showed significantly lower postoperative pain than the St group (P < 0.001) and significantly less swelling (P < 0.01) on day 3 postoperative. Th

Patients with Crohn's disease often have low bone mineral density and an increased risk of osteoporosis. Although decreased bone formation can be seen at diagnosis, the underlying pathophysiology of suboptimal bone accrual remains poorly understood. We sought to evaluate a novel mechanism affecting osteogenesis in patients with Crohn's disease. In this case series, we evaluated bone marrow composition at the distal femur and proximal tibia of the left knee measured via magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy and relaxometry in five adolescents with the diagnosis of Crohn's disease. The subjects w

UNLABELLED: Sclerostin is a soluble antagonist of canonical Wnt signaling and a strong inhibitor of bone formation. We present experimental data on the role of sclerostin in chronic kidney disease - bone mineral disorder (CKD-MBD).
METHODS: We performed 5/6 nephrectomies in 36-week-old sclerostin-deficient (SOST-/-) B6-mice and in C57BL/6J wildtype (WT) mice. Animals received a high phosphate diet for 11weeks. The bones were analyzed by high-resolution micro-computed tomography (μCT) and quantitative bone histomorphometry. Aortic tissue was analyzed regarding the extent of vascular calcificat

Dietary-induced obesity (DIO) resulting from high-fat (HF) or high-sugar diets produces a host of deleterious metabolic consequences including adverse bone development. We compared the effects of feeding standard rodent chow (Control), a 30% moderately HF (starch-based/sugar-free) diet, or a combined 30%/40% HF/high-fructose (HF/F) diet for 12weeks on cancellous/cortical bone development in male Sprague-Dawley rats aged 8weeks. Both HF feeding regimens reduced the lean/fat mass ratio, elevated circulating leptin, and reduced serum total antioxidant capacity (tAOC) when compared with Controls.

Although the antiresorptive agent alendronate has been shown to increase bone mineral density (BMD) at the hip and spine and decrease the incidence of osteoporotic fractures in older women, few data are available regarding early prediction of long-term response to therapy, particularly with regard to increases in hip BMD. Examining short-term changes in biochemical markers incorporates physiologic response with therapeutic compliance and should provide useful prognostic information for patients. The objective of this study was to examine whether early changes in biochemical markers of bone tur

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of autologous dental bone powder grafts with deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) allografts in oral implant bone deficiency.
METHODS: Between January 2021 and January 2023, we enrolled 120 patients with inadequate bone for oral implantation, dividing them into an experimental group and a control group (60 each). The experimental group received autologous dental bone powder grafts, while the control group received DBBM allografts. Wound healing was assessed using the early healing index (EHI) with 5 days of closure as the baseline timeline, as Grade

This article highlights the potential negative effect of the current combat environment on bone health of young military men and women who may be at risk for stress fractures and future bone disease because of alterations primarily in diet and physical activity level during deployment. A combination of physiologic biomarkers, including bone turnover and bone mineral density, and nutrition and exercise surveys can provide meaningful data on potential health risks related to deployment. Soldiers participating in an investigation into bone health before and after deployment did not have decreased

Liver transplantation : official publication of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society2003eng
Osteoporosis remains a serious potential complication of liver transplantation, although its incidence may be significantly reduced by the use of lower doses of glucocorticoids. Additional factors likely to contribute to its pathogenesis include other immunosuppressive agents, particularly cyclosporin A and FK506, vitamin D insufficiency, secondary hyperparathyroidism, hypogonadism and pre-existing bone disease. Bone density assessment and spinal X-rays should be performed before transplantation to assess subsequent fracture risk and vitamin D and gonadal status assessed. Measures should be ta

Osteoporosis involves the degradation of the bone's trabecular architecture, cortical thinning and enlargement of cortical pores. Increased cortical porosity is a major cause of the decreased strength of osteoporotic bone. The majority of cortical pores, however, are below the resolution limit of MRI. Recent work has shown that porosity can be evaluated by MRI-based quantification of bone water. Bi-exponential T2 * fitting and adiabatic inversion preparation are the two most common methods purported to distinguish bound and pore water in order to quantify matrix density and porosity. To assess

Osteoporosis and decreased bone density is a frequent complication of anorexia nervosa (AN). As of yet, there have been no studies of accomplished treatment of AN-related osteoporosis with romosuzumab, a monoclonal antibody to sclerostin. We report the first case of a premenopausal, 29-year old patient in Switzerland with decreased bone density and osteoporotic fractures due to anorexia nervosa, who completed the treatment with romosuzumab. There was a significant increase in bone mineral density (BMD) after 12 months of therapy. No serious side effects were reported. To date, only bisphosphon

AIM: The first objective of the present study was to compare the short- and long-term 3D volume stability of sub-sinusal bone regeneration in rabbits using different space fillers. The second objective was to assess qualitatively and quantitatively the early bone formation process and long-term behavior of the regenerated bone.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen rabbits underwent a double sinus lift procedure using: blood clot (Clot), autogenous bone chips (Auto) and bovine hydroxyapatite (BHA). Animals were euthanized at 1 week, 5 weeks and 6 months. Samples were subjected to X-ray microtomograp

Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA2001eng
The aim of the study was to review the effect of etidronate on bone density and fractures in postmenopausal women. We searched MEDLINE from 1966 to 1998, examined citations of relevant articles, and the proceedings of international osteoporosis meetings. We contacted osteoporosis investigators to identify additional studies, primary authors, and pharmaceutical industry sources for unpublished data. We included 13 trials that randomized women to etidronate or an alternative (placebo or calcium and/or vitamin D) and measured bone density for at least 1 year. For each trial, three independent rev

Most patients with primary hyperparathyroidism have reduced radial and preserved vertebral bone density. We have identified a subset of patients with low lumbar spine bone density at diagnosis. This study assessed the effect of parathyroidectomy (undertaken based upon accepted surgical guidelines) or nonintervention on bone mineral density (BMD) in these patients. Twenty-two of 143 (15%) patients with mild primary hyperparathyroidism had lumbar spine BMD more than 1.5 SD below the mean for an age- and sex-matched population (z-score). Fourteen underwent parathyroidectomy, whereas 8 were follow

Minimal trauma fractures in bone diseases are the result of bone fragility. Rather than considering bone fragility as being the result of a reduced amount of bone, we recognize that bone fragility is the result of changes in the material and structural properties of bone. A better understanding of the contribution of each component of the material composition and structure and how these interact to maintain whole bone strength is obtained by the study of metabolic bone diseases. Disorders of collagen (osteogenesis imperfecta and Paget's disease of bone), mineral content, composition and distri

BACKGROUND: Midpalatal suture (MPS) repair in growing patients after RPE has been previously reported. However, differences between young and adult patients for timing and pattern of MPS repair after rapid maxillary expansion are expected. The aim of this study was to evaluate the midpalatal suture repair pattern after miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) in adult patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 21 patients (six males, 15 females) successfully treated with MARPE with a mean initial age of 29.1 years of age (SD = 8.0; range = 20.1-45.1). MPS repair was evaluat

BACKGROUND: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and osteoporosis are chronic illnesses that increase in prevalence with aging and certain metabolic disorders. The association between PAD, rates of bone loss, and fracture risk in older men is uncertain.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We sought to test the hypothesis that PAD is associated with higher rates of bone loss and increased fracture risk. We analyzed data from a prospective cohort study involving 6 US centers and 5781 men at least 65 years of age. We assessed ankle-brachial index and hip bone mineral density, followed up prospectively for changes

BACKGROUND: Hormone replacement therapy (HRT), the mainstay of osteoporosis prevention, is limited because of dose-related risks, side effects, and patient acceptance. The bone-sparing efficacy and tolerability of the lowest available doses of HRT have not been adequately studied in elderly women.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the bone-sparing effect of continuous low-dose HRT in elderly women.
DESIGN: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
SETTING: University osteoporosis research and clinical center.

We have examined the relationships among calcium intake, mechanical stress (activity) and axial (lumbar) and peripheral (midradius) bone mass in a population of 60 young normal, healthy eumenorrheic women (age 25-34 years), selected on the basis of weight for height (within 20% of expected). In this population, vertebral bone mineral density was significantly related (r = 0.41, p less than 0.005) to activity pattern but not to calcium intake. Elimination of the effects of activity, however, disclosed a significant correlation between total calcium intake and vertebral bone mass (r = 0.36, p le

INTRODUCTION: DXA have greatly contributed to the development of paleoradiology, a branch of diagnostic imaging that allows to obtain information about human remains in contexts of archaeological and/or forensic interest. In this manuscript we report the unique experience of DXA performed on the relic of a Saint; in particular we analyzed a skeletal fragment of St. Nicholas, kept in the Basilica of Bari (Italy) since 1087.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The bone to be examined consisted of the posterior arch of the ninth left rib that was 12cm long, 1.2cm maximum width and 1.7cm thick at the body. Th
