Beyond the regulatory radar: knowledge and practices of rural medical practitioners in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Informal and unregulated rural medical practitioners (RMPs) provide healthcare services to about two-thirds of people in Bangladesh, although their service is assumed to be substandard by qualified providers. As the RMPs are embedded in the local community and provide low-cost services, their practice pattern demands investigation to identify the shortfalls and design effective strategies to ameliorate the service. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 2015-16 using a convenient sample from all 64 districts of Bangladesh. Personnel practising modern medicine, without an

Invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella from stool samples of healthy human carriers are genetically similar to blood culture isolates: a report from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS) (serotypes Typhimurium and Enteritidis) are major causes of bloodstream infections in sub-Saharan Africa, but their reservoir is unknown. Aiming to demonstrate human carriers as a reservoir, we assessed an iNTS disease endemic rural community (Kikonka health area, Democratic Republic of the Congo) for intestinal carriage of iNTS. After a census, healthy subjects from randomly selected households provided three successive stool samples for Salmonella culture. We next compared the stool isolates for genetic relatedness with time and health area-matched bl

Dynamics of antimicrobial resistance and virulence of staphylococcal species isolated from foods traded in the Cape Coast metropolitan and Elmina municipality of Ghana.

The impact of staphylococci on food poisoning and infections could be higher than previously reported. In this study, we characterised the occurrence and coexistence of antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes of staphylococci isolates in foods. Staphylococci were isolated from 236 samples of selected street-vended foods and identified. The pattern of antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes in the staphylococci were assessed using disc diffusion, PCR and analysis of next-generation sequencing data. The food samples (70.76 %) showed a high prevalence of staphylococci and differed among

Prevalence of ESBL-Producing Enterobacter Species Resistant to Carbapenems in Iran: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Carbapenems are the last-line therapy for multidrug-resistant (MDR) infections caused by Enterobacterales, including those caused by Enterobacter species. However, the recent emergence of carbapenem-resistant (CR) and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae pathogens, which are resistant to nearly all antibiotics, has raised concerns among international healthcare organizations. Hence, because there is no comprehensive data in Iran, the current study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of antibiotic resistance among Enterobacter species, especially CR and ESB
