Current state of mental health and substance use in Toledo, Belize: A mixed methods study.

Mental health and substance use are increasingly pressing issues in communities across low-and-middle income countries, including Belize, particularly Toledo, the country's most rural and resource-limited district. Using community-based participatory research methods, this preliminary mixed methods study (quantitative n = 163; qualitative n = 10) aims to (1) investigate mental health symptoms and substance use patterns in a non-randomized sample of individuals from southern Belize and (2) explore community perspectives on mental health among community stakeholders. Findings show high levels of

Role of organic acid-degrading bacteria in a microbial methanation system using a subterranean microbial community.

Microbial methanation, which produces CH4 from H2 and CO2 (H2/CO2) using hydrogenotrophic methanogens, converts CO2 into a resource. The proposed system utilizes an isolated strain of hydrogenotrophic methanogen and an anaerobic microbial community from a deep aquifer where H2 and CO2 are produced via biodegradation of organic matter by fermentative bacteria, which CH4 is then produced from H2 and CO2 by hydrogenotrophic methanogens. The strain and microbial community were added separately to liquid medium in serum bottles. An H2/CO2 mixture was added to each bottle's gas phase and incubated.

Using Photovoice to Explore Determinants of Health among Homeless and Unstably Housed Women.

The lived experiences of homeless and unstably housed women, including their health-related priorities, are understudied in smaller metropolitan and rural communities. In this study, we partnered with a day center for women who experience homelessness in Spokane, Washington. We used Photovoice, a community-based participatory action research method, to explore the health-related concerns, needs, and behavior of women who are homeless or unstably housed. Participant-generated photographs and group interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Three themes were generated: "These are my s

Understanding American Indian Youth in Residential Recovery from Substance Use Disorder: Risk and Protective Experiences and Perceived Recovery Support.

Historical trauma has contributed to the reality that addiction disproportionately affects tribal communities, including American Indian youth. We sought to understand American Indian youths' own experiences and perceptions of the environments to which they return after completing residential treatment for substance use disorder. We recruited three cohorts of American Indian residents of a substance use disorder treatment facility (N = 40). These residents completed a survey that measured risk and protective factors, as well as actual risk behaviors, including drug use, gambling, and violence.

Attempting Randomized Housing First Research in a Community Context: Reflections on Failure.

The Housing First (HF) model of permanent supportive housing for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness has a strong evidence base that has largely been driven by researchers in the field of community psychology in partnership with community-based organizations. However, important gaps in the HF literature remain. Implementing rigorous research designs to further the evidence for HF requires immense resources to fund both the housing intervention and the research activities. In the absence of such resources, university-community partnerships may be established to integrate research with

Synchrophasor Sensor Networks for Grid Communication and Protection.

This paper focuses primarily on leveraging synchronized current/voltage amplitudes and phase angle measurements to foster new categories of applications, such as improving the effectiveness of grid protection and minimizing outage duration for distributed grid systems. The motivation for such an application arises from the fact that with the support of communication, synchronized measurements from multiple sites in a grid network can greatly enhance the accuracy and timeliness of identifying the source of instabilities. The paper first provides an overview of synchrophasor networks and then pr

Expansion of community-based perinatal care in California.

OBJECTIVE: In California, hospitals with Community Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) increased from 17 in 1990 to 52 in 1997. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of their growth on level-specific distribution of births, acuity, and neonatal mortality. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 4,563,900 infants born from 1990 to 1997 were analyzed by levels of care. We examined shifts in birth location and acuity. Neonatal mortality for singleton very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants without congenital abnormalities was used to assess differences in level-specific survival. RESULTS: Li

A machine learning screening model for identifying the risk of high-frequency hearing impairment in a general population.

BACKGROUND: Hearing impairment (HI) has become a major public health issue in China. Currently, due to the limitations of primary health care, the gold standard for HI diagnosis (pure-tone hearing test) is not suitable for large-scale use in community settings. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a cost-effective HI screening model for the general population using machine learning (ML) methods and data gathered from community-based scenarios, aiming to help improve the hearing-related health outcomes of community residents. METHODS: This study recruited 3371 community resident

Comparing Self-Management Programs with and without Peer Support among Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Clinical Trial.

Rationale: Self-management support (SMS) is an essential component of care for patients who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but there is little evidence on how to provide SMS most effectively to these patients. Peer support (i.e., support provided by a person with a similar medical condition) has been successfully used to promote self-management among patients with various chronic conditions, yet no randomized studies have focused on testing its effects for patients with COPD. Objectives: To assess whether adding peer support to healthcare professional (HCP) support to help

Exploring the acceptability of a lip-reading app in acute and critical care: Perspectives from patients with tracheostomies, relatives and healthcare professionals.

AIMS: Effective communication with patients with tracheostomies presents a significant clinical challenge. Speech Recognition Application for the Voice Impaired (SRAVI) is a digital lip-reading app that converts silent speech into text and audio, supporting communication between patients, relatives and healthcare professionals. Despite its potential, the acceptability of SRAVI among users remains unknown, limiting understanding of its real-world implementation. This study aimed to explore the acceptability of SRAVI among patients with tracheostomies, their relatives and staff in acute and crit

Patshitinikutau Natukunisha Tshishennuat Uitshuau (a place for Elders to spend their last days in life): a qualitative study about Innu perspectives on end-of-life care.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous palliative persons and their families often have different values, spiritual traditions, and practices from Western culture and Canadian health systems. Additionally, many healthcare policies and practices have been established without adequate consultation of the Indigenous populations they are meant to serve. This can result in barriers to Innu receiving culturally safe end-of-life care. Innu community leaders from Sheshatshiu, Labrador, have identified a need for further research in this area. The purpose of this study is to: (1) describe the cultural and spiritual pr

Interventions to increase vaccination in vulnerable groups: rapid overview of reviews.

OBJECTIVE: Groups which are marginalised, disadvantaged or otherwise vulnerable have lower uptake of vaccinations. This differential has been amplified in COVID-19 vaccination compared to (e.g.) influenza vaccination. This overview assessed the effectiveness of interventions to increase vaccination in underserved, minority or vulnerable groups. METHODS: In November 2022 we searched four databases for systematic reviews that included RCTs evaluating any intervention to increase vaccination in underserved, minority or vulnerable groups; our primary outcome was vaccination. We used rapid review

Identifying community physical activity and health resources for treatment of back pain by utilizing members of a physical activity network.

BACKGROUND: Back pain is one of the leading causes of health care expenditure in the US and is linked to an increased body mass index. Many evidence-based modalities for the prevention and treatment of back pain closely mirror recommendations for weight loss and include physical activity and health maintenance activities (PAHM). The primary aim of this study was to ascertain community assets, and perceptions of the use of PAHM in the treatment of back pain by West Virginia Physical Activity Network (WVPAN) members. METHODS: Participants for the study were recruited from the West Virginia Phys

Bridging Evidence and Practice: A Community-Engaged Adaptation of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Autistic Youth With Anxiety Receiving Services in Community-Based Organizations.

Differences between research and community care settings contribute to a research-to-practice gap. Engaging community partners in intervention adaptation may better align mental health evidence-based practices (MH-EBPs) with community-based settings and intervention recipients. This study utilized a community-engaged intervention adaptation method (i.e., Adapted Method for Program Adaptation through Community Engagement [AM-PACE]) to develop a community-adapted version of Behavioral Interventions for Anxiety in Children with Autism (BIACA). A Community Advisory Board provided ongoing input abo
