Numerical Model of the Eye for Understanding Acute Microgravity-Induced Ocular Changes.

INTRODUCTION: Intraocular pressure (IOP) changes with acute microgravity exposure defy easy explanation. IOP increases above supine levels acutely in weightlessness, but studies show both central venous pressure and intracranial pressure (ICP) fall below supine values. These reductions would be expected to reduce IOP in weightlessness. We developed and validated a physiologically relevant numerical model of the eye to investigate how these ocular changes could occur. METHODS: A finite element numerical model of the 50th percentile adult human globe, optic nerve, and surrounding tissues was co

Biomechanical comparison of different fixation methods for tibiofibular syndesmosis injuries: a finite element analysis study.

BACKGROUND: Syndesmosis injuries require effective fixation to restore ankle stability and function. Therefore, the aim of this study was to use the finite element method to evaluate and compare the biomechanical efficiency of three different fixation techniques used to treat syndesmosis injuries: ANK nails, cortical screws, and suture buttons. METHODS: A three-dimensional model of the ankle complex of a healthy individual was created from computed tomography (CT) images for finite element analysis (FEA). In the model, the tibia, fibula, talus, calcaneus, and navicular bones and ligament struc

Impact of sintering temperature and compression load on the crystallinity and structural ordering of polytetrafluoroethylene.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) parts are normally consolidated under multi-tonne presses and sintered, but the separate roles of load and temperature on crystal development remain under-explored. Here, we molded PTFE powder under compressive loads (1.2, 1.8 and 2.4 kN) followed by sintering (320, 330 and 340 °C). The starting powder and molded films were characterised using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS), Dynamic Image Analysis (DIA) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Raising the sintering temperature from 320 °

Deep learning-based acceleration of muscle water T2 mapping in patients with neuromuscular diseases by more than 50% - translating quantitative MRI from research to clinical routine.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative muscle water T2 (T2w) mapping is regarded as a biomarker for disease activity and response to treatment in neuromuscular diseases (NMD). However, the implementation in clinical settings is limited due to long scanning times and low resolution. Using artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate MR image acquisition offers a possible solution. Combining compressed sensing and parallel imaging with AI-based reconstruction, known as CSAI (SmartSpeed, Philips Healthcare), allows for the generation of high-quality, weighted MR images in a shorter scan time. However, CSAI has n

# Language processing characteristics in normal pressure hydrocephalus: insights from eye-tracking analysis of incorrect responses.

INTRODUCTION: In patients with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), the aging process results in decreased efficiency of cerebrospinal fluid circulation, leading to ventricular enlargement. This enlargement compresses several brain structures, impairing functions such as visual perception, semantic memory processing, and phonological encoding contributing to language processing difficulties. This study examines real-time language processing in NPH patients and healthy elderly (HE) controls by comparing their eye movements during correct and incorrect responses in a lexical retrieval task (LRT)

Improvements to the Nutri-Score to address challenges identified in a Nordic setting.

BACKGROUND: Front-of-pack nutrition labelling is an important policy tool for public health. The Nutri-Score classifies foods according to nutritional quality from A (high quality) to E (low quality). We have previously identified inconsistencies between Nutri-Score and the Norwegian food-based dietary guidelines. The objective was to propose revisions to the Nutri-Score 2023 algorithms and determine if the revised algorithms better align with the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023 (NNR2023) and the Keyhole label. METHODS: Items in the Norwegian pre-packed foods databases Tradesolution (n

Frequency of trigeminal neurovascular contacts identified on 3D-fast imaging employing steady-state acquisition magnetic resonance imaging in asymptomatic adults.

BACKGROUND: Neurovascular conflict is considered one of the main causes of Trigeminal neuralgia, and 3D fast imaging employing steady-state acquisition magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the diagnostic imaging of choice. However, no tool is available to confirm imaging findings as the primary cause of trigeminal neuralgia because neurovascular contact is frequently found in asymptomatic individuals, according to some literature, although very little data is available till now. Therefore, we aim to determine the frequency of trigeminal neurovascular contact, involved nerve segment, culprit ves

Successful Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta (REBOA) deployment by emergency medicine physicians for refractory non-traumatic cardiac arrest.

AIM: Cardiac arrest afflicts over 600,000 people annually in the United States. Rates of survival from cardiac arrest have remained stagnant for decades. Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta (REBOA) is most commonly used in the management of severe hemorrhagic shock, primarily for non-compressible thoracoabdominal trauma. A growing body of evidence suggests it may serve a role in augmenting cardiac and cerebral perfusion in non-traumatic, refractory cardiac arrest. Typically, REBOA is deployed by interventional radiologists under real-time fluoroscopy. Limited data exist t
