Different Elemental Compositions and Potential Functions of Vacuoles in Bolivina spissa (Foraminifera, Rhizaria) Based on Cryo-SEM-EDS Analyses.

Benthic Foraminifera exhibit diverse adaptations to low oxygen (O2) environments, including denitrification, a rare trait among eukaryotes. Denitrifying species store intracellular nitrate (NO3 -), possibly within vacuoles, and contribute significantly to the global marine nitrogen (N) cycle. Additionally, widespread phosphate (PO4 3-) accumulation suggests a role in supporting metabolism under O2-depleted conditions. However, the organelles storing NO3 - and PO4 3- remain unknown, limiting the mechanistic understanding of these alternative metabolic pathways. To investigate the intracellular

Computationally Efficient p-Version Finite Element Analysis of Composite-Reinforced Thin-Walled Cylindrical Shells with Circumferential Cracks.

Cylindrical shells are extensively employed in fluid transport, pressure vessels, and aerospace structures, where they endure mechanical and environmental stresses. However, under high pressure or external loading, circumferential cracks may develop, threatening structural integrity. Composite patch reinforcement is an effective method to mitigate crack propagation and restore structural performance. This study presents a finite element model using p-refinement techniques to analyze cylindrical shells with circumferential cracks reinforced by composite patches. The approach integrates equivale

Crack Extension Analysis and Parameter Optimization in Robot-Assisted Cracked Tooth Preparation Process: Finite Element Analysis and Experiment.

Existing robot-assisted cracked tooth preparation systems often result in crack extension or even tooth fracture due to inappropriate parameter settings. In order to solve this problem, a thermal-mechanical coupling model was developed to optimize the grinding parameters for a cracked tooth preparation robot. The grinding force model, based on an empirical formula, was established and analyzed. Using this model, the grinding temperature field of the tooth surface under a moving heat source was also determined. The optimal feed speed and rotational speed of the bur were identified through analy

Finite element analysis of anterior spanning attachment devices for supporting biomechanical stability in diaphyseal femoral periprosthetic fracture fixation.

The incidence of periprosthetic femoral fractures has increased in recent years. Osteosynthetic stabilisation is challenging, particularly for UCS IV.3-C fractures. Lateral plate osteosynthesis is the gold standard; however, it allows excessive vibration, leading to plate breakage. Orthogonal double plate osteosynthesis has been established but requires considerable intraoperative dissection of the anterior extensor muscle. This work aims to analyse newly developed plate designs that demonstrate adequate vibration behaviour, which, in turn, promotes callus healing and causes less soft tissue t

Biomechanics of humeral locking plate augmented with fibular strut allograft and intramedullary strut plate using finite element analysis.

A humeral locking plate augmented with fibular strut allograft treated for proximal humeral fracture without internal structural support is satisfactory. While it is better clinically and biomechanically than the locking plate alone, it has disadvantages, including difficulty to obtain and the possibility of infection. Other alternative augmentation approaches are in demand. Therefore, the hypothesis of this study is whether intramedullary strut plate can replace fibular strut allograft as a surgical method while providing similar biomechanical performance. The finite element analysis (FEA) mo

Development of a subject-specific finite element analysis workflow to assess local biomechanics during segmental bone defect healing.

Longitudinal estimation of local strain distributions within the regenerative niche of segmental femoral fractures is important for understanding mechanobiology principles for bone healing to design more effective rehabilitation regimens and mitigate nonunion complications. Finite element (FE) modeling is the standard for investigating these biomechanical parameters, yet most existing models lack clinical relevance due to their use of generic data and computational inefficiency. This study developed a subject-specific FE workflow aimed at accurate biomechanical predictions based on subject-spe

For severe and rigid adult idiopathic scoliosis, does an optimal extent of posterior intervertebral release exist? A finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: The surgical management of severe, rigid adult idiopathic scoliosis (AdIS) is challenging. While posterior intervertebral release (PIVR) is used to enhance correction, the optimal number of release segments is unknown. This study aimed to identify the optimal PIVR strategy by evaluating the biomechanical effects of varying release levels. METHODS: A patient-specific finite element (FE) model of a Lenke 2A + AdIS spine (T1-sacrum, main thoracic curve 84°) was created and validated. Six surgical scenarios were simulated: instrumentation-only (M1), Ponte osteotomy alone (M2), and M2

Biomechanical impact of cortical bone vs. traditional pedicle screw trajectories: a finite element study on lumbar spinal instrumentation.

BACKGROUND: Pedicle screw fixation using the cortical bone trajectory (CBT) enhances stability by engaging cortical bone, offering a valuable alternative to the traditional pedicle screw trajectory (TT). This study used finite element analysis to compare L4-5 instrumentation with CBT and TT screws, investigating whether the increased cortical bone engagement in CBT improves stability but makes it more susceptible to fatigue failure. METHODS: A L3-sacrum model was generated using anonymized CT patient data, validated against existing studies, showing consistent ROM (range of motion) values. A

Biomechanical analysis of a newly designed and 3D printed plate-locking interbody cage: an observational study of finite element analysis.

Anterior cervical interbody fusion (ACDF) has become a classic surgical procedure for the treatment of cervical degenerative diseases, and various interbody cages are widely used in this procedure. We used 3D printing technology to produce a new type of plate-locking cage, anticipating to achieve high fusion rate with the high biomechanical stability. This study is to compare the biomechanical characteristics between a newly designed interbody cage and a conventional Zero-profile cage during ACDF using finite element analysis. The CT images of a 35-year-old healthy male were extracted and save
