Willingness to receive intravenous buprenorphine treatment in opioid-dependent people refractory to oral opioid maintenance treatment: results from a community-based survey in France.

BACKGROUND: Injectable opioids are an interesting option for people who inject drugs (PWID) that do not respond to oral Opioid Maintenance Treatment (OMT). To date, intravenous (IV) buprenorphine - a safer drug than full-opioid agonists in terms of overdose risk - has never been tested in a clinical trial on opioid dependence. We designed a survey to better understand the profile of PWID eligible for IV buprenorphine, and their willingness to receive it. METHODS: This cross-sectional community-based national survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews (in low-threshold and addiction

Weight gain-based targeted selective treatments (TST) of gastrointestinal nematodes in first-season grazing cattle.

A three-year trial was performed in south-western Sweden to compare animal performance and levels of parasite control in three grazing groups, each with 18-24 first-season grazing (FSG) calves in similar set-stocked pasture enclosures. These groups were subjected to: (1) no parasite control (NT), (2) monthly repeated doramectin (Dectomax(®)) injections (SP), or (3) targeted selective weight gain-based anthelmintic treatments (TST) but only when individual calf performance was inferior to the average of the poorer 50% of those calves in group SP. In each year, weight and parasitological variabl

Postpartum corticosterone administration reduces dendritic complexity and increases the density of mushroom spines of hippocampal CA3 arbours in dams.

Postpartum depression (PPD) affects approximately 15% of mothers after giving birth. A complete understanding of depression during the postpartum period has yet to be established, although disruptions in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and stress during the postpartum may be involved. To model these components in rats, we administered high corticosterone (CORT) postpartum, which increases immobility in the forced swim test (FST), and reduces maternal care, body weight and hippocampal cell proliferation in dams. The hippocampus is altered in response to chronic stress, exposure to high

Factors associated with relapse into drug use among male and female attendees of a three-month drug detoxification-rehabilitation programme in Dhaka, Bangladesh: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: To determine relapse rates and associated factors among people who use drugs (PWUDs) attending abstinence-oriented drug treatment clinics in Dhaka, Bangladesh. METHODS: A cohort of male and female PWUDs admitted to the 3-month drug detoxification-rehabilitation treatment programmes of three non-governmental organisation-run drug treatment clinics in Dhaka, Bangladesh were interviewed on admission and over the following 5 months, which included the first 2 months after discharge. The study subjects comprised 150 male and 110 female PWUDs who had been taking opiates/opioids, cannabi

Harm reduction intensity-Its role in HAART adherence amongst drug users in Amsterdam.

BACKGROUND: Opioid substitution treatment seems to improve adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in drug users (DU). DU in Amsterdam receive methadone within a harm reduction programme. We hypothesized that not only receiving methadone, but joining this complete comprehensive programme would improve HAART adherence. METHODS: Included were 102 HIV-positive DU attending the Amsterdam Cohort Study (ACS), reporting HAART use at multiple visits between 1999 and 2009. Non-adherence was defined as taking less than 95% of medication in the past 6 months (self-reported). Harm reduc

Efficacy of infectious bronchitis virus vaccinations in the field: association between the alpha-IBV IgM response, protection and vaccine application parameters.

Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is, in spite of vaccination, still a major cause of respiratory problems in broilers and of poor egg production in breeders and layers in many parts of the world. A possible cause of the insufficient protection induced by vaccination is an inadequate application of the vaccine. This paper reports the results of two field studies. In the first, the results of the alpha-IBV IgM enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) on post-vaccination sera were compared with the efficacy of the IBV vaccination against homologous challenge of the same broilers. The results sh

Depression and symptomatic response among HIV-infected drug users enrolled in a randomized controlled trial of directly administered antiretroviral therapy.

BACKGROUND: Depression is highly prevalent among HIV-infected injection drug users (IDUs) and has been associated with poor adherence to antiretroviral therapy and increased morbidity and mortality. Factors associated with changes in depressive symptoms among this group receiving antiretroviral treatment that have not been extensively evaluated. METHODS: This post-hoc analysis of prospective clinical trial analyzes the factors associated with changes in depressive symptomatology using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies of Depression Scale (CES-D) among HIV-infected IDUs enrolled in a prospe

Factors influencing the development of stereotypic and redirected behaviours in young horses: findings of a four year prospective epidemiological study.

Stereotypies are invariant and repetitive behaviour patterns that seemingly have no function, which tend to develop in captive animals faced with insoluble problems and may be indicative of reduced welfare. A 4 year prospective study of the factors influencing the development of stereotypic and redirected behaviours (abnormal behaviour) in a population of 225 young Thoroughbred and part-Thoroughbred horses was conducted between 1995 and 1999. Abnormal behaviour affected 34.7% of the population. Multivariable analysis showed that foals of low- or middle-ranking mares were less likely to develop

Village poultry production systems in the central highlands of Ethiopia.

Participatory rural appraisal (PRA), supported by checklists and intensive case studies on individual households, was carried out in three villages at three different altitudes in the central highlands of Ethiopia. The chicken production system in each village is described and the problems are discussed. More than 60% of the families kept chickens, and in most cases the women owned and managed the birds and controlled the cash from the sales. The production systems followed were mainly low-input and small-scale, with 7-10 mature birds per household, reared in the back yards with inadequate hou

The effect of chelation therapy with succimer on neuropsychological development in children exposed to lead.

BACKGROUND: Thousands of children, especially poor children living in deteriorated urban housing, are exposed to enough lead to produce cognitive impairment. It is not known whether treatment to reduce blood lead levels prevents or reduces such impairment. METHODS: We enrolled 780 children with blood lead levels of 20 to 44 microg per deciliter (1.0 to 2.1 micromol per liter) in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial of up to three 26-day courses of treatment with succimer, a lead chelator that is administered orally. The children lived in deteriorating inner-city housing and we

Trait-like immunological and hematological measures in female rhesus across varied environmental conditions.

In this 2-year longitudinal study, 45 2-year-old female rhesus were observed as they were captured and removed from a free-ranging setting (Phase I), single caged for 1 year (Phase II), and housed in small, stable social groups for an additional year (Phase III). During the study, eight blood samples were taken, and hematological, immunological, and hormonal variables were assayed to determine whether 1) any of the measures would exhibit trait-like, inter-individual longitudinal stability, despite fluctuations in population means induced by Phases I, II, and III; 2) plasma concentrations of co

Health professions education and training programs in health care for homeless individuals: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: In 2024, homelessness in the United States reached a historic peak. Homelessness creates challenges for affected individuals and health care professionals. Although research suggests that health professions education (HPE) students and trainees and homeless patients can benefit from educational and training programs in health care for homeless individuals (homeless health care), how many programs exist or are effective is unknown. This scoping review identifies programs, synthesizes outcomes, summarizes gaps, and provides recommendations to advance practice. METHOD: In May 2023, the

Indoor Thermal Environments, Cooling Access, and Energy Burden in New Orleans, LA: Challenges and Opportunities for Heat Adaptation.

Extreme heat is a significant and growing health hazard in urban locations around the world, particularly in the Southeastern United States (U.S.). While most extreme heat research and interventions are focused on ambient outdoor conditions and the neighborhood environment, the indoor residential environment is where the most severe heat-health consequences occur. The aim of this study was to characterize the indoor thermal environments and identify predictors of high indoor temperatures for residents of heat-vulnerable neighborhoods within New Orleans, Louisiana, within the context of current

Community Coalition Building and Human-Centered Design Strategies to Advance Homeless Health Systems: A Case Study from Rural North Carolina.

In Burke County, North Carolina, a Hepatitis A outbreak among unsheltered residents exposed gaps in access to clinic-based care and prompted early, ad hoc "backpack medicine" outreach efforts to deliver care directly in nontraditional settings. While this approach addressed immediate needs, it highlighted the inadequacy of isolated interventions, prompting local partners to pursue more structured, coordinated, and community-driven approaches to homeless health system design. This project report describes how Burke County Public Health, in partnership with the University of North Carolina at Ch

The emergence of urban scaling in Ancient Southwest Asia.

This study investigates the long-term emergence of settlement scaling in Ancient Southwest Asia by analysing house-size data from 1,852 buildings across 80 archaeological sites dating from the Late Epipalaeolithic to the Iron Age (c. 13,100-580 BCE). Using domestic architecture as a proxy for household productivity, we provide the first fully diachronic test of settlement scaling theory in the region where urbanisation first developed. Mixed-effects models reveal that scaling relationships were absent in the Neolithic, ambiguous in the Chalcolithic, and only fully emerged in the Bronze Age, wh

Determination of the residual efficacy of broflanilide (VECTRON™ T500) insecticide for indoor residual spraying in a semi-field setting in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: The rotational use of insecticides with diverse modes of action in indoor residual spraying (IRS) is pivotal for enhancing malaria vector control and addressing insecticide resistance. A key factor in national malaria vector control/elimination programmes is the rate at which these insecticides decay. VECTRON™ T500, with broflanilide as its active ingredient, is a recently developed candidate insecticide formulation which has shown promising results in certain phase II experimental hut trials. However, its residual efficacy across different settings has not been thoroughly investig
