Performance of the Obstetric Early Warning Score in critically ill patients for the prediction of maternal death.

BACKGROUND: Every day, about 830 women die worldwide from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. Obstetric early warning scores have been proposed as a potential tool to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality, based on the identification of predetermined abnormal values in the vital signs or laboratory parameters, to generate a rapid and effective medical response. Several early warning scores have been developed for obstetrical patients, but the majority are the result of a clinical consensus rather than statistical analyses of clinical outcome measures (ie, maternal deaths)

[Facial nerve paralysis as a sequelae of chronic suppurative otitis].

INTRODUCTION: Facial palsy can be a consequence of untreated chronic suppurative otitis media. This disease can last for many years manifesting as partial deafness and ear effusion resulting in palsy after spreading of pathological process in the surrounding cranial structures. The patient with facial palsy cannot rise his forehead, nor close his eye on the involved side, while his cheek and lips just fall. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective research included patients operated for chronic suppurative otitis media with facial palsy during the last ten years. We have examined data on dura

Genetic Variation and Association with Post-Operative Outcomes for Neonates and Infants in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital heart defects (CHD) occur in 1% of live births, with an estimated at least 33% of affected infants having genetic defects. It has become standard to screen children with CHD for genetic findings that could aid clinical decision-making, yet modern testing yields large volumes of information without understanding clinical utility. Genome-wide studies have identified associations between large copy number variants and neurocognitive outcomes in patients with CHD. Still, little research exists on the prognostic power of screening tests such as microarrays. The goal of this

3D printing-based Ganz approach for treatment of femoral head fractures: a prospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Femoral head fractures are uncommon injuries. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of femoral head fracture is the preferred treatment for most patients. There are several surgical approaches and treatments for this difficult fracture. However, the optimal surgical approach for the treatment of femoral head fracture remains controversial. Meanwhile, the operation is difficult and the complications are numerous. We prospectively reviewed patients with femoral head fractures managed surgically through the 3D printing-based Ganz approach to define a better approach with the lea

An evidence-informed occupational health curriculum for pre-deployment preparation of aquanauts in underwater habitats: a scenario-based framework development study.

BACKGROUND: Underwater habitats represent emerging extreme workplaces in which pressure exposure, immersion, confined living, external underwater tasks, and delayed access to definitive care create combined occupational health and safety demands. Candidate selection establishes baseline suitability. It cannot, on its own, specify which preventive and response capabilities should be taught, practiced, and documented between selection and deployment. METHODS: We developed a scenario-based, evidence-informed occupational health curriculum for the pre-deployment preparation of non-medical researc

Chlorhexidine as the optimal disinfection method for an accidentally dropped autograft during an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery: A double-blind study.

PURPOSE: No consensus exists on the optimal sterilization method for contaminated grafts during anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. This study evaluated the efficacy of single and multiple sequential disinfectants in sterilizing the contaminated graft. METHODS: Thirty ACLs were harvested from 30 knees during total knee arthroplasty and sectioned into 10 semi-identical pieces (n = 300). All grafts were dropped simultaneously on the operating room floor and left for 60 s. Then, the grafts were assigned to the 10 study groups. (1) The control group used no sterilizing method

Mannitol-based passive thermal runaway suppressing phase-change materials for thermal safety protection in high-temperature, sealed environments.

Due to their extremely high energy density and storage life of more than ten years, specialized lithium/thionyl chloride batteries offer irreplaceable value in demanding operating environments such as downhole oil well instruments, deep-sea equipment, and other enclosed high-temperature operational equipment. However, stresses such as high temperature, high pressure, and physical impact in such confined environments can easily trigger a chain reaction of internal chemical side reactions in the battery, leading to thermal runaway and posing a serious threat to equipment safety. To address these

Highly sensitive photoinduced carbon dioxide sensors made using a ZIF-67/Cs2AgBiBr6 heterojunction.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions have become a key environmental issue of widespread concern at present. Currently, the use of metal oxide based chem-resistive gas sensors is restricted due to their high operating temperature and short lifetime. Therefore, the development of efficient and rapid gas sensors is of great significance in modern research. A lead-free double perovskite, Cs2AgBiBr6 (CABB), can be activated by ultraviolet light and generate a large number of free carriers, which have the potential to increase charge density and enhance the gas sensitivity. Photo-induced carriers provide

The association of food deserts with readmission and re-operation following long-segment lumbar fusion.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition is increasingly recognized as a key determinant of postoperative recovery in spine surgery. An estimated 17% of U.S. adults reside in a food desert, reflecting a substantial population at risk for poor nutritional status. However, the role of residence in food deserts with spinal fusion outcomes remains unknown. OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate the association between living in a food desert and rates of reoperation and postoperative complications after long-segment lumbar fusion. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all adult patients at a single institution from 2

Utilization of Prognosis Assignment: A Cross-Sectional Survey of Military Periodontists.

INTRODUCTION: Prognosis is a forecast of the likely course of a disease and its future implications on treatment outcomes. The significance of periodontal prognosis in clinical practice is evident by its influence on treatment planning, communication, and in the retrospective evaluation of treatment results. While there are multiple well-known prognosis systems reported in the periodontal dental literature, there is an absence of data on the actual use of prognosis assignment among practicing clinicians. The purpose of this study was to survey military periodontists regarding their utilization

Single-port video-assisted thoracoscopic sleeve lobectomy after neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The morbidity and mortality of lung cancer have always ranked first among malignant tumors (MTs). Previous studies have shown that neoadjuvant chemotherapy can improve the 5-year survival rate of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but the benefit is limited. Studies have proven that neoadjuvant immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy has unique advantages in prolonging patient survival, reducing distant recurrence, and inducing antitumor immunity. However, its impact remains to be more comprehensively investigated. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 59-year-old male who was admit

Total ankle replacement: Implant Manufacturer's guidelines for post-operative rehabilitation: A review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Total ankle replacements (TARs) is emerging as a successful alternate treatment option to arthrodesis for surgical treatment of end stage ankle arthritis. This has led to manufacturers producing a selection of implants. There is wide variations in post-operative rehab protocols being adopted for treatment following TAR surgery. This depends on choice of implants and manufacturer recommendations too. Following the author's investigation, a lack of standardisation between manufacturer post-operative protocols was identified. The aim of this project was to analyse similarities and d
