The use of artificial intelligence (AI) with pediatric urology is reshaping clinical care by enhancing diagnostic accuracy, surgical planning, and postoperative monitoring. AI integration offers significant advancements in managing conditions like hydronephrosis, where deep learning models automate severity grading and predict obstruction more accurately than conventional methods. In penile anomalies, such as hypospadias, AI reduces subjectivity through standardized image analysis, aiding in diagnosis and surgical decision-making. Furthermore, machine learning algorithms assist in risk-stratif

A major challenge in aging research is identifying interventions that can improve lifespan and health and minimize toxicity. Clinical studies cannot usually consider decades-long follow-up periods, and therefore, in-silico evaluations using omics-based surrogate biomarkers are emerging as key tools. However, many current approaches train predictive models on observational data, rather than on intervention data, which can lead to biased conclusions. Yet, the first classifiers for lifespan extension by compounds are now available, learned on intervention data. Here, we review evaluation methodol

Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (CO2RR) using electrocatalysts has gained attention for its potential to convert atmospheric CO2 into value-added chemicals. Recently, machine learning (ML) has emerged as a promising approach for catalyst development. In previous studies, catalyst screening using ML performed using adsorption energy databases obtained from density functional theory calculations has yielded successful results. However, the full potential of ML in catalyst discovery for rapid screening has been hindered by the limitation of conventional approaches to elements present in

A simple approach was developed to computationally construct a polymer dataset by combining simplified molecular-input line-entry system (SMILES) strings of a targeted polymer backbone and a variety of molecular fragments. This method was used to create 14 polymer datasets by combining seven polymer backbones and molecules from two large molecular datasets (MOSES and QM9). Polymer backbones that were studied include four polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based backbones, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly(allyl glycidyl ether) (PAGE), and polyphosphazene (PPZ). The generated polymer datasets can be us

OBJECTIVE: Emergency services are essential to the organization of the health care system. Nevertheless, they face different operational difficulties, including overcrowded services, largely explained by their inappropriate use and the repeated visits from users. Although a known situation, information on the theme is scarce in Brazil, particularly regarding longitudinal user monitoring. Thus, this project aims to evaluate the predictive performance of different machine learning algorithms to estimate the inappropriate and repeated use of emergency services and mortality.
METHODS: To that end

Aim: The Framingham Risk Score (FRS) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) Pooled Cohort Equation (PCE) for predicting risk for incident coronary heart disease (CHD) work poorly. To improve risk stratification for CHD, we developed a novel integrated genetic-epigenetic tool. Materials & methods: Using machine learning techniques and datasets from the Framingham Heart Study (FHS) and Intermountain Healthcare (IM), we developed and validated an integrated genetic-epigenetic model for predicting 3-year incident CHD. Results: Our approach was more sensitive than FRS and PCE and had hi

Adaptive immune receptor repertoires (AIRR) are key targets for biomedical research as they record past and ongoing adaptive immune responses. The capacity of machine learning (ML) to identify complex discriminative sequence patterns renders it an ideal approach for AIRR-based diagnostic and therapeutic discovery. To date, widespread adoption of AIRR ML has been inhibited by a lack of reproducibility, transparency, and interoperability. immuneML (immuneml.uio.no) addresses these concerns by implementing each step of the AIRR ML process in an extensible, open-source software ecosystem that is b

One of the major challenges in cancer diagnosis from microarray data is to develop robust classification models which are independent of the analysis techniques used and can combine data from different laboratories. We propose a meta-classification scheme which uses a robust multivariate gene selection procedure and integrates the results of several machine learning tools trained on raw and pattern data. We validate our method by applying it to distinguish diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) from follicular lymphoma (FL) on two independent datasets: the HuGeneFL Affmetrixy dataset of Shipp e

OBJECTIVE: Skin cutaneous melanoma (SKCM) is a highly aggressive malignancy originating from melanocytes, with a continuously rising global incidence. Developing strategies for early prevention and precise treatment remains a major challenge in oncology. Notably, advances in immunotherapy have brought new hope to SKCM patients. Increasing evidence suggests that various forms of regulated cell death, particularly cuproptosis and ferroptosis, can modulate the tumor microenvironment (TME) by inducing the death of both tumor and immune cells, thereby influencing the efficacy of immunotherapy. Cons

BACKGROUND: Neuregulin 4 (NRG4) is a novel metabolic regulator closely associated with insulin resistance and thyroid dysfunction. However, its role in the pathogenesis of comorbid type 2 diabetes mellitus and hyperthyroidism (T2DM-FT) remains to be systematically elucidated. Given the complex clinical characteristics of T2DM-FT patients, traditional statistical methods are often insufficient to effectively analyze nonlinear relationships among multiple variables. Machine learning techniques have garnered widespread attention due to their advantages in modeling high-dimensional, heterogeneous

BACKGROUND: Children with developmental disabilities show a high prevalence of behaviours that challenge (BtC). Thus, harnessing known risk markers to target early intervention to children at the greatest risk of BtC is essential. In this study, machine learning techniques were used to develop prediction models of risk (no, low and high severity behaviour) for different BtC (self-injurious behaviour, aggression, property destruction, 'any BtC'). A secondary aim was to assess the external validation of these models to predict future behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Current malaria diagnosis methods that rely on microscopy and Histidine Rich Protein-2 (HRP2)-based rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) have drawbacks that necessitate the development of improved and complementary malaria diagnostic methods to overcome some or all these limitations. Consequently, the addition of automated detection and classification of malaria using laboratory methods can provide patients with more accurate and faster diagnosis. Therefore, this study used a machine-learning model to predict Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) antigen positivity (presence of malaria) based on soci
