Correlation of autism with temporal tubers in tuberous sclerosis complex.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an inherited genetic disorder commonly associated with neuropsychiatric complications like epilepsy, mental retardation, autism and other behavioral problems and constitutes about 1-4% of the autistic population. Mental retardation and seizures, particularly infantile spasms are significant risk factors for the development of autism. Patients of TSC with autism are more likely to have temporal tubers than those cases without autism. We describe clinical and neuroimaging features of two such cases of tuberous sclerosis with autism.

Cutaneous melanocytic lesions: selected problem areas.

Cutaneous melanocytic proliferations are diverse morphologically, and their behavioral attributes may be difficult to discern with certainty. As a consequence, diagnostic anatomic pathologists regularly encounter problems in the interpretation of such lesions. This review considers several selected issues in that subject area, including proliferative congenital nevi, architecturally disordered (dysplastic) nevi, morphologic variants of Spitz nevus, atypical lentiginous melanocytic proliferations, nevoid melanoma, diagnostically deceptive histologic variants of melanoma, "epidermotropic" metast

Pharmacologic management of relapse prevention in addictive disorders.

Substance use disorders are an important public health problem associated with significant mortality and morbidity. Effective maintenance pharmacotherapies are available for tobacco, alcohol, and opioid use disorders. For optimum treatment response, these medications should be used in conjunction with behavioral interventions. For other drugs of abuse, especially for cocaine, medication development is an active area of research. Further research is needed to develop new pharmacotherapies for substance use disorders and establish clinical guidelines on how to use these medications most effectiv

Duplication of chromosome region (16)(p11.2 --> p12.1) in a mother and daughter with mild mental retardation.

We report a 40-year-old female with mild mental retardation and behavior problems and her 6-year-old daughter. Chromosome analysis showed that both patients had a proximal duplication in the short arm of chromosome 16. The aberration was characterized further with band-specific probes, resulting in a 46,XX,dir dup(16)(pter --> p11.2::p12.1 --> qter) karyotype. The clinical and cytogenetical findings are compared to other patients with partial trisomy 16p reported in the literature.

Families of the lesbian baby boom: children's contact with grandparents and other adults.

In an exploratory study of 37 lesbian-mother families, the frequency of children's contact with adults in their extended family and friendship networks was found to counter stereotypes of such children as isolated from parents' families of origin. Children were more likely to have regular contact with relatives of the biological than nonbiological mother. Mothers rated those in regular contact with grandparents as having fewer behavior problems, and those in more regular contact with unrelated adults rated themselves more positively on general well-being.

An assessment and care planning strategy for nursing home residents with dementia.

Dementia is extremely common among nursing home patients, and it takes many forms. Accurate assessment by staff is crucial in providing appropriate care to these patients. Equally important is the ability to establish care priorities. Current staging models are so general, however, that their usefulness is limited. Thus, this paper proposes a strategy that, using basic assessment data, categorizes dementia residents according to four key determinants of care needs: activities of daily living status, behavioral problems, communication abilities, and physical transition.

Stressors and well-being among caregivers to older adults with dementia: the in-home versus nursing home experience.

We examined differences in stressors and well-being for caregivers who care for a relative with dementia at home and those who had placed their relative in a nursing home. The groups did not differ in depression or somatic complaints, but nursing home caregivers had fewer social and interpersonal disruptions. Controlling for caregiving problems, nursing home caregivers reported more stressors due to ADL (activities of daily living) assistance, their relatives' behavioral and cognitive functioning, and lack of caregiving support from family and friends.

Management of midtrimester oligohydramnios: a case for amnioinfusion.

Ultrasonic evaluation and diagnosis in cases of severe oligohydramnios is extremely difficult, and management problems exist. With appropriate diagnostic procedures, management becomes less of a dilemma. Amnioinfusion, which is the instillation of fluid into the amniotic cavity, enhances ultrasonic resolution necessary for observation of fetal anatomy and behavior. The cases of severe oligohydramnios reviewed typify those in which amnioinfusion was used to diagnose and manage mid-trimester pregnancies. This technique enabled the practitioner to define the specific cause of the oligohydramnios.

Behavioral disorders in the elderly.

Based on the study of 40 patients in a unit of a large geriatric center, as well as on long overall experience, the problems of aged men and women with various emotional disorders are discussed. Case abstracts are presented to illustrate chronic organic brain syndrome, delirium, hallucinatory behavior, paranoid ideation, depression, and reactions triggered by physical illness. The geriatrician should be fully aware of all the interlocking factors in the patient's adjustment to his condition. Only in this way can the geriatrician and staff choose the best relevant therapy.

Regulatory problems and associated factors among infants in Arba Minch health and demographic surveillance system sites, southern Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Infant regulatory problems are a common source of concern for parents, and they increase the risk of impaired infant-caregiver bonding. Despite their impact, they are often overlooked in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of infant regulatory problems in Arba Minch Health and Demographic Surveillance System sites in southern Ethiopia. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 451 mother-infant pairs from February 15 to March 15, 2022. Regulatory problems were assessed using diagnostic interviews for reg

Psychological characteristic subtypes in adolescents with mental disorders and their associations with self-injury behavior and childhood maltreatment.

OBJECTIVES: Self-injury behavior is a prevalent mental health problem among adolescents. Childhood maltreatment is closely associated with the development of alexithymia, impulsivity, and self-injury behavior in adolescents and young adults with mental disorders; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to classify psychiatric patients aged 12 to 24 years into psychological subtypes based on alexithymic and impulsive traits, to explore differences in self-injury behavior among these subtypes, and to examine whether different forms of childhood maltreatment are associa

Classroom-Level and Individual-Level Prosociality and Help-Seeking Behaviors Among Adolescents.

IMPORTANCE: Although individual prosociality, defined as voluntary behavior intended to benefit another, is known to promote help-seeking behaviors among adolescents, it remains unclear whether a prosocial community, such as the classroom, also facilitates these behaviors. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the associations of classroom-level and individual-level prosociality with help-seeking behaviors, considering age and gender, and to examine moderation effects of being bullied. Multidimensional Social Interaction and School Refusal Tendency Among Elementary and Junior High School Students: A Three-Year Longitudinal Study with an Exploratory Indirect-Association Analysis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: School refusal tendency is an important school adaptation issue, but its upstream psychosocial correlates remain insufficiently understood. We examined whether baseline multidimensional social interaction was prospectively associated with later school refusal tendency and whether an exploratory statistical indirect association was observed through psychological and behavioral difficulties. METHODS: This three-year longitudinal observational study included 314 students in grades 5-9 aged ≥12 years at baseline in 2020 and followed through 2023. Social interaction was asse

Recognizing the Frequency of Exposure to Cyberbullying in Children: The Results of the National HBSC Study in Serbia.

Nowadays, children are able to enrich their reality via the Internet. Unfortunately, this may increase their risk of becoming victims of cyberbullying. We analyzed the health characteristics and risk behavior of two cohorts of children in Serbia; those who reported being exposed to cyberbullying and those who did not. The statistical differences and logistic regression models were applied to the data on 3267 students collected from 64 schools participating in the 2017 Serbian Study on health behavior in school-age children (HBSC). Children exposed to cyberbullying reported having the following

Longitudinal relationship between child maltreatment, bullying victimization, depression, and nonsuicidal self-injury among left-behind children in China: 2-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Left-behind childre (LBC) in China are deeply concerned by society because of their high risk of emotional and behavioral problems. Depression and nonsuicidal self-injury are the most harmful and worrying negative emotional and behavioral problems in LBC. Unfortunately, LBCs are in unfavorable environments for a long time and are prone to negative interpersonal interactions. Child maltreatment and bullying victimization, as the two most typical negative interpersonal interactions in family and school environments, maybe the key risk factors for depression and nonsuicidal self-injur

Mental Healthcare through Cognitive Emotional Regulation Strategies among Prisoners.

Prisoners are exposed to a deprived environment, which triggers mental illness and psychological problems. Abundant research has reported that mental illness problems, suicide, aggression, and violent behaviors occur in incarcerated people. Although the mental healthcare system for incarcerated people is emphasized, little research has been conducted due to their limited environment. In particular, the regulation of negative emotion is significantly associated with mental illness and anti-social and violent behaviors. However, mental healthcare through cognitive emotional regulation based on c

Effects of intranasal oxytocin on neural reward processing in children and adolescents with reactive attachment disorder: A randomized controlled trial.

Reactive attachment disorder (RAD) is associated with socially and emotionally withdrawn/inhibited behaviors and reduced neural responses to rewards. Children and adolescents with RAD show aberrant attachment behaviors, and existing psychotherapies are difficult to maintain; therefore, pharmacological interventions to aid and boost treatment responses are needed. Oxytocin (OT) administration is known to promote reward functioning. We investigated whether single-use intranasal OT administration improved neural responses during reward processing in patients with RAD compared with healthy control

Association patterns of cannabis abuse and dependence with risk of problematic non-substance-related dysregulated and addictive behaviors.

Co-occurrence of drug misuse with other dysregulated behaviors is common. This study was aimed at exploring the associations between the risk of presenting a clinically relevant condition involving non-substance-related addictive or dysregulated behaviors (as measured by the MultiCAGE CAD-4 screening), and cannabis abuse/dependence (CAST/SDS) scores, and the role of gender therein. Participants were recruited using stratified probabilistic sampling at the University of Granada. Mann-Whitney's U tests were used to compare male and female students in SDS and CAST scores.
