Web-Based Education Program for Care Partners of People Living With Dementia (iGeriCare): Protocol for a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of dementia is increasing in Canada and in many countries internationally. People living with dementia are highly dependent on family and friend care partners, who may have little knowledge of the disorder. Web-based interventions in dementia have been shown to improve care partner mental health and reduce burden, but few have been widely implemented or rigorously studied. We developed a web- and email-based dementia education platform for care partners, iGeriCare, which includes 12 asynchronous, multimedia, e-learning lessons and email-based content to reinforce the

Home-based self-administered transcranial direct current stimulation for women affected by primary dysmenorrhoea in Northeastern Brazil: a protocol study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of women with primary dysmenorrhoea is high and negatively impacts physical and mental health. The intense cyclic episodes of pain generate central nervous system dysfunctional processing. In this sense, strategies focused on the central nervous system are important to re-establish normal functioning. Home-based self-administered transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) emerges as a strategy to modulate dysfunctional brain areas and improve the symptoms. This protocol aims to evaluate the effects of home-based self-administered tDCS for pain, premenstrual sympt

Rates and Clinical Correlates of Cannabis Use in Trichotillomania and Skin Picking Disorder.

Despite rising rates of cannabis use across the United States, and in psychiatric populations especially, relatively limited attention has been paid to rates of cannabis use in individuals with body focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) such as trichotillomania and skin picking disorder. Using data from an online survey, we collected rates of past-year cannabis use among individuals with BFRBs and investigated whether cannabis use is associated with the clinical presentation of trichotillomania and/or skin picking disorder. We found that approximately 33% of individuals reported past-year canna

Patient-Centered, Theory-Based, Online Intervention to Promote a Physically Active Lifestyle for People With Multiple Sclerosis: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: People with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience life challenges due to the nature of disease progression. Although an active lifestyle has been shown effective for symptom and relapse management, most people with MS lead a sedentary lifestyle and do not reach the recommended physical activity (PA) guidelines. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to test the preliminary efficacy of a codeveloped, online self-management intervention based on the health action process approach (HAPA) adapted for people with MS to cultivate a physically active lifestyle. METHODS: The 8-week intervention program

Glucose Targets Using Continuous Glucose Monitoring Metrics in Older Adults With Diabetes: Are We There Yet?

The older population is increasing worldwide and up to 30% of older adults have diabetes. Older adults with diabetes are at risk of glucose-related acute and chronic complications. Recently, mostly in type 1 diabetes (T1D), continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices have proven beneficial in improving time in range (TIR glucose, 70-180 mg/dL or glucose 3.9-10 mmol/L), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and in lowering hypoglycemia (time below range [TBR] glucose <70 mg/dL or glucose <3.9 mmol/L). The international consensus group formulated CGM glycemic targets relating to older adults with diabete

Nutrition and Glycemic Control in Children and Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Attending Diabetes Camps.

Background/Objectives: Diabetes camps for children and adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes mellitus (T1DM) offer the opportunity to have a camping experience in a safe and supportive environment where they can receive diabetes skills education, such as glucose self-monitoring, insulin injections, management of hypoglycemia/hyperglycemia, and nutritional recommendations, including meal planning and carbohydrate counting. The ultimate goal of diabetes camps is to educate children to manage their condition independently, without parental involvement. Additionally, attending a diabetes camp is an exc

Use of Freestyle Libre 2.0 in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus and elevated HbA1c: Extension phase results after a 12-week randomized controlled trial.

AIM: To investigate extension phase outcomes with intermittently scanned continuous glucose monitoring (isCGM 2.0) in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and elevated HbA1c (7.5-12.2% [58-110 mmol/mol]). METHODS: One hundred children with T1DM aged 4-13 years were initially in a 12-week randomised controlled trial (RCT) comparing glycaemic outcomes with isCGM 2.0 (intervention group, n = 49) with self-monitored blood glucose (Control group, n = 51). After the 12-week RCT both groups were offered an extension phase with isCGM 2.0 for another 12 weeks. HbA1c, CGM metrics, psychologica

Hypoglycemia in Pregnant Women with Type 1 Diabetes: Is It Inevitable?

The human body has abundant mechanisms to counteract hypoglycemia and prevent neuroglycopenia primarily involving the secretion of glucagon and adrenalin. Within several years from the onset of diabetes, people with type 1 diabetes lose their ability to mount a counterregulatory response to hypoglycemia and develop hypoglycemia unawareness, thus being at risk for deteriorating to a state of severe hypoglycemia and neuroglycopenia. Pregnant individuals with type 1 diabetes are particularly prone to experience severe hypoglycemia during the first half of pregnancy. This may be not only due to th

Sensory processing subtypes relate to distinct emotional and behavioral phenotypes in a mixed neurodevelopmental cohort.

Children with autism and other neurodevelopmental concerns (NDC) frequently exhibit an array of sensory processing dysfunction phenotypes, posing a significant challenge their adaptive development. Additionally, these children often encounter difficulties with self-regulation, including emotion dysregulation, anxiety, and symptoms associated with attention and hyperactivity. However, further research is required to comprehend how patterns of sensory processing differences across neurodevelopmental conditions may contribute to regulatory control problems. Adopting a transdiagnostic perspective

Use of Flash Glucose Monitoring and Glycemic Control in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Not Treated with an Intensive Insulin Regimen: 1-Year Real-Life Retrospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Estimation of laboratory-derived glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) cannot be individually used to monitor clinically significant trends in glucose variability. Hence, clinicians advise use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices such as the Freestyle Libre™ flash glucose monitoring system (FLASH) to optimize glycemic control by estimating glucose monitoring index (GMI) values, which convert mean glucose into an estimate of simultaneously measured laboratory HbA1c. This study aimed to investigate the sustainability of intermittently scanned continuous glucose monitoring (isCGM) i

Shoes for self-managing chronic hip Pain: the SCHIPP randomized clinical trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hip pain is common and disabling and is largely due to osteoarthritis (OA). Self-management is recommended by international OA clinical guidelines yet there are few effective treatment options. Footwear has been suggested as a self-management approach, given that foot motion influences hip forces. Currently, guidelines advocate 'stable supportive' shoes for people with OA, however this is based solely on expert opinion given no research has investigated whether these shoes are effective at reducing symptoms in people with OA-related chronic hip pain. Therefore, this randomi

Adherence as a Predictor of Glycemic Control Among Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes: A Retrospective Study Using Real-world Evidence.

PURPOSE: Metabolic control among adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is generally poor. Nonadherence is a contributor to this poor glycemic control, leading to adverse outcomes. The findings of studies reporting the association between adherence and glycemic control are conflicting. This study aimed to assess the level of adherence among adolescents with T1DM and its relationship with glycemic control. METHODS: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study that was conducted at Sidra Medicine, a state-of-the-art tertiary health care facility for women and children in Qatar. Mea

The BEACON study: an update to the protocol for a cohort study as part of an evaluation of the effectiveness of smartphone-assisted problem-solving therapy in men who present with intentional self-harm to emergency departments in Ontario.

BACKGROUND: Men who present to the emergency department (ED) with self-harm are at high risk of dying by suicide, with 2.7% of men dying in the year following their presentation, more than double the rate for women (1.2%). Despite this, care received after an ED visit is highly variable and many are not assessed for psychological needs. Furthermore, the limited psychological care that is available is often not covered by provincial health insurance. Even when referrals for follow-up care are made, engagement rates are low. Previous recommendations to improve engagement include written discharg

Does Chronic Stress Moderate Age Differences in Emotional Well-Being? Testing Predictions of Strength and Vulnerability Integration.

OBJECTIVES: The Strength and Vulnerability Integration (SAVI) theory posits boundary conditions, such as chronic stress, which place constraints on positive emotional aging. We examine SAVI's prediction that higher levels of chronic stress will attenuate favorable age gradients for multiple indices of well-being. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from a diverse systematic probability sample of adults (n = 260, ages 25-65). Multiple regression analysis was used to examine age gradients and test age × chronic stress interactions on 5 measures of well-being relevant for SAVI's prediction: po

Type 1 diabetes glycemic management: Insulin therapy, glucose monitoring, and automation.

Despite innovations in insulin therapy since its discovery, most patients living with type 1 diabetes do not achieve sufficient glycemic control to prevent complications, and they experience hypoglycemia, weight gain, and major self-care burden. Promising pharmacological advances in insulin therapy include the refinement of extremely rapid insulin analogs, alternate insulin-delivery routes, liver-selective insulins, add-on drugs that enhance insulin effect, and glucose-responsive insulin molecules. The greatest future impact will come from combining these pharmacological solutions with existin

Effortful Control - A Transdiagnostic Dimension Underlying Internalizing and Externalizing Psychopathology.

Effortful control (EC) or self-regulation refers to the ability to regulate behavior, emotion, and cognition. It has been identified as a contributor to both adaptive and adverse outcomes in children, adolescents, and adults and this across many domains. As such, it could be considered as a transdiagnostic dimension underlying internalizing (e.g., mood and anxiety disorders) and externalizing (e.g., substance use disorders, ADHD) psychopathology. We aimed to examine the role of EC throughout the adult psychopathological spectrum by means of a literature search of studies published between 2008

Reciprocal effects between cognitive and affective states in women with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder: An Ecological Momentary Assessment study.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is characterized by cyclical mood changes resulting in clinically significant distress and functional impairment. Studies on momentary cognitive and affective states and their interplay during daily life over the menstrual cycle in affected women are still lacking. Using Ecological Momentary Assessment with electronic diaries, 61 women with current PMDD and 61 healthy control women reported their current mood, rumination, and self-acceptance eight times a day over two consecutive days per cycle phase (menstrual, follicular, ovulatory, and late luteal phas

Materialism, Financial Motives and Gambling: Examination of an Unexplored Relationship.

Gambling has an inherent structural monetary component, and financial motive is one of the main motivations for gambling. Despite this, and contrary to other addictive behaviours that involve money such as compulsive buying, gambling has never been studied from a materialism perspective. The objective of the present study was to explore the links between materialism and gambling disorder (GD) and whether this relationship is mediated by financial motives for gambling. We compared 65 pathological gamblers (PGs) seeking treatment to 65 matched non-problem gamblers. The data collection included s
