Parietal Activation Associated With Target-Directed Right Hand Movement Is Lateralized by Mirror Feedback to the Ipsilateral Hemisphere.

Current research shows promise in restoring impaired hand function after stroke with the help of Mirror Visual Feedback (MVF), putatively by facilitating activation of sensorimotor areas of the brain ipsilateral to the moving limb. However, the MVF related clinical effects show variability across studies. MVF tasks that have been used place varying amounts of visuomotor demand on one's ability to complete the task. Therefore, we ask here whether varying visuomotor demand during MVF may translate to differences in brain activation patterns. If so, we argue that this may provide a mechanistic ex

Artificial intelligence-enabled cytopathological interpretation of fluorescence microscopy images via a multimodal large language model.

Quantitative analysis of fluorescence microscopy images remains a significant challenge in cytopathological assessments, as subjective interpretation and inter-observer variability hinder reproducibility and standardization of classifications. In this study, an artificial intelligence-assisted analytical framework utilizing a multimodal large language model (MLLM) was employed to classify cytotoxic responses in acridine orange/propidium iodide-stained MCF-7 cells subjected to doxorubicin treatment for 24 h. A total of 500 fluorescence images, collected from five experimental groups including a

Menstrual cycle effects on foot and ankle musculoeskeletal biomechanics: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle are associated with a higher prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries in women; however, their impact at the foot and ankle level remains underexplored. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the potential biomechanical effect of the ovulatory phase on foot and ankle structure compared to other phases of the menstrual cycle, given its possible association with injury occurrence. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web Of Science, and Embase (last 10 years), following PRISMA gui

Analysis and Validation of Cross-Modal Generative Adversarial Network for Sensory Substitution.

Visual-auditory sensory substitution has demonstrated great potential to help visually impaired and blind groups to recognize objects and to perform basic navigational tasks. However, the high latency between visual information acquisition and auditory transduction may contribute to the lack of the successful adoption of such aid technologies in the blind community; thus far, substitution methods have remained only laboratory-scale research or pilot demonstrations. This high latency for data conversion leads to challenges in perceiving fast-moving objects or rapid environmental changes. To red

Evaluation of the polyp-based resect and discard strategy: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Standard colonoscopy practice requires removal and histological characterization of almost all detected small (< 10 mm) and diminutive (≤ 5 mm) colorectal polyps. This study aimed to test a simplified polyp-based resect and discard (PBRD) strategy that assigns surveillance intervals based only on size and number of small/diminutive polyps, without the need for pathology examination. METHODS: A post hoc analysis was performed on patients enrolled in a prospective study. The primary outcome was surveillance interval agreement of the PBRD strategy with pathology-based management acco

Topic classification of synchrotron experiment proposals using the OpenAlex model: enhancing metadata granularity and assessing live service feasibility.

Experiment proposals at synchrotron facilities serve as the primary gateway for instrument access. They currently lack the standardized and granular topic metadata necessary for tasks such as classification and review, and, broadly speaking, reuse. This paper defines and tests the feasibility of a real-time topic classification service for experiment proposals using an open-source machine-learning model and domain experts for the evaluation phase. We applied the OpenAlex topic classification model to 5384 experiment proposals and selected 209 of them to each be independently evaluated by three

ReVGG-R2Net: Optimized recurrent framework for microscopic blood cell segmentation.

Accurate segmentation of microscopic blood cell images is critical for advancing biomedical analysis and diagnostics. However, existing segmentation models often fall short due to limited dataset diversity and challenges in capturing fine cellular details, especially when different cell types are closely positioned. This paper addresses these challenges by introducing ReVGG-R2Net, a novel model architecture tailored for the precise segmentation of diverse blood cell types. ReVGG-R2Net integrates recurrent blocks within both the encoder and decoder, enhancing feature refinement to capture intri

Blood platelet inventory management: Incorporating data-driven demand forecasts.

Platelet products are vital in the blood transfusion system since they are used for treating serious diseases such as cancer. They are expensive products (C$504 per unit) with a short shelf life of five to seven days. Since platelet demand is uncertain and highly variable, platelet inventory management is a challenging task. In this work, we propose a data-driven inventory management model for platelet products that incorporates demand forecasts in the inventory management process. The proposed model uses forecast-dependent target inventory levels to determine an ordering policy that has a goa

An Ultrasound Prototype for Remote Hand Movement Sensing: The Finger Tapping Case.

In the context of neurodegenerative diseases, finger tapping is a gold-standard test used by clinicians to evaluate the severity of the condition. The finger tapping test involves repetitive tapping between the index finger and thumb. Subjects affected by neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, often exhibit symptoms like bradykinesia, rigidity, and tremor. As a result, when these individuals perform the finger tapping task, instability in both the tap rate and finger displacement can be observed. Currently, clinicians assess bradykinesia by visually observing the patient's fi

Identification of a Brain Network Underlying the Execution of Freely Chosen Movements.

Action selection refers to the decision regarding which action to perform in order to reach a desired goal, that is, the "what" component of intention. Whether the action is freely chosen or externally instructed involves different brain networks during the selection phase, but it is assumed that the way an action is selected should not influence the subsequent execution phase of the same movement. Here, we aim to test this hypothesis by investigating whether the modality of movement selection influences the brain networks involved during the execution phase of the movement. Twenty healthy vol

Trial-and-error copying of demonstrated actions reveals how fledglings learn to 'imitate' their mothers.

Understanding how humans and other animals learn to perform an act from seeing it done has been a major challenge in the study of social learning. To determine whether this ability is based on 'true imitation', many studies have applied the two-action experimental paradigm, examining whether subjects learn to perform the specific action demonstrated to them. Here, we show that the insights gained from animals' success in two-action experiments may be limited, and that a better understanding is achieved by monitoring subjects' entire behavioural repertoire.
