User engagement in the tuberculosis treatment support tools intervention and its impact on treatment outcomes: A secondary analysis of a pragmatic trial.

Digital adherence technologies (DATs) may improve health behaviors only when users engage, but links between engagement, user factors, and outcomes are unclear. TB Treatment Support Tools (TB-TST) is a DAT with a smartphone app connecting patients to treatment supporters and weekly drug metabolite testing. We evaluated TB-TST app engagement in a pragmatic randomized controlled trial and identified factors associated with adherence and treatment outcomes. Engagement was measured from app interactions by 277 participants over 180-days of TB treatment. Adherence was assessed via daily self-report

Measuring neurodevelopment in iron-deficient children in sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic review of evidence and gaps.

Anemia and iron-deficiency anemia are prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and linked to impaired brain and developmental outcomes. Progress in understanding these effects is constrained by inconsistent developmental measurement and minimal neuroimaging. This review evaluated how brain growth, cognition, and developmental status have been measured among children under five exposed to anemia, iron deficiency (ID), or iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) in SSA, to assess the availability, reliability, and limitations of neurodevelopmental measurement approaches and implications for comparability and i

Impact of scaffold material choice on osteosarcoma phenotype and drug responses in 3D.

Biomaterials-based 3D models have emerged as new cancer research tools for studying osteosarcoma (OS). However, the impact of scaffold material choice on OS phenotype and drug responses in 3D remains largely unknown, as previous studies used different biomaterials as scaffolds without direct comparison. In this study, we systematically compared four biomaterials: Gelatin methacrylate (GelMA), Gelatin microribbons (Gel µRB), Collagen I hydrogel (Col1), and Poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA). All have previously been applied for either 3D OS culture or bone tissue engineering. To mimic the min

Enhanced particle swarm optimization for feature selection in SVM-based Alzheimer's disease diagnosis.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder marked by neuronal loss, leading to cognitive and behavioral decline. With the aging global population, AD incidence and its socioeconomic burden are increasing. Developing effective early diagnostic methods is thus critical for improving patient outcomes and slowing disease progression. In this paper, an enhanced Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, which integrates opposition-based Latin squares sampling initialization (OL) with dynamic inertia weights and learning factors (D), termed OLDPSO, is proposed to improve

Cross-cultural adaptation of mental health screening instruments for Samoan adolescents.

Mental health problems appear common among Pacific Islander adolescents. The lack of culturally adapted mental health screening instruments is a barrier to establishing prevalence estimates needed to inform resource allocation and health system budgeting. Following the Gjersing et al. (2010) guidelines, we adapted five clinical mental health screening instruments to measure symptoms of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and suicide-related indicators for Samoan adolescents. In collaboration with clinical experts and American Samoan adolescents, we employed a four-stage incremental app

Selective H2-O Tissue Expression Reduces Risk for Graft-versus-Host Disease in an In Vivo Transplantation Model.

BACKGROUND: Allogeneic stem cell transplantation (aSCT) is frequently used to treat patients with hematologic malignancies. The therapeutic effect relies mainly on the graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effect, in which donor T cells eliminate residual malignant cells. Unfortunately, the beneficial GVL effect is often accompanied by detrimental graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). A successful separation of both effects could not yet be achieved. In previous work, we identified 2 groups of HLA-class II restricted antigens depending on their behavior towards HLA-DM. DM-resistant antigens are presented in

Alcohol and aging: Next-generation epigenetic clocks predict biological age acceleration in individuals with alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Chronic heavy alcohol use is a major risk factor for premature aging and age-related diseases. DNA methylation (DNAm)-based epigenetic clocks are novel tools for predicting biological age. However, the newest configurations, causality-enriched epigenetic clocks, have not been assessed in the context of alcohol consumption and alcohol use disorder (AUD). METHODS: Epigenetic aging was evaluated in a sample of 615 individuals (372 AUD patients and 243 healthy controls) by applying the GrimAge Version 1 (V1) and Version 2 (V2) clocks alongside three causality-enriched clocks (CausAge,
