OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to obtain the median values and distributions of tympanometric variables and the distributions of acoustic reflex thresholds for three age groups of unselected school-aged children. Furthermore, the investigation was undertaken to provide normative immittance data for selected, otologically normal 7-, 10-, and 14-yr-old children.

Long-term recordings of the compound action potential of the acoustic nerve of young, pigmented guinea pigs were carried out by two different techniques of implantation. The electrodes were inserted either by way of the mastoid process into the bony recess above the round window or they were introduced into the facial canal via the stylomastoid foramen. Before and after each implantation, special tests (Preyer-reflex, otoscopy, impedance audiometry) were performed for preliminary selection of the animals and to discover postoperative induced disturbances of sound conduction in the middle ear.

The sensitivity prediction from the acoustic reflex (SPAR) test was administered to 90 subjects who were classified according to four levels of mental retardation and five levels of hearing sensitivity. SPAR results showed accurate hearing level prediction for 58% of the subjects, one-category errors for 29%, and two- or three-category errors for 13%. This review describes the current role and potential future applications of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) for the management of heart failure (HF). CMR allows noninvasive morphologic and functional assessment, tissue characterization, blood flow, and perfusion evaluation. CMR overcomes echocardiography limitations (geometric assumptions, interobserver variability and poor acoustic window) and provides incremental information in relation to cause, prognosis, and treatment monitoring of patients with HF.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of Legionella pneumonia with unusual neurologic involvement.
INTERVENTION: Chest X-ray, lumbar puncture, magnetic imaging of the brain, electroencephalography, audiometry, brainstem acoustic evoked potentials and institution of oral antibiotics and steroids.
MAIN RESULT: Gradual clinical improvement of neurologic and pulmonary illness within 4 weeks.
CONCLUSION: Legionellosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of neurologic involvement in the setting of pneumonia.

According to the author, the assumption is made that in Ménière's disease, compensation should be paid in acoustic trauma cases. Ménière's disease is an aftereffect of noise exposure, even if the time lapse exceeds 10 years. A historical review of existing literature (from 1872 to 1958) shows no convincing evidence of this matter. Ten patients were chosen at random. All were exposed to noise and presented with vestibular dysfunction at a certain time.

122 cases of fluctuant hearing loss were studied. Serous otitis media was commonest followed by Meniere's disease, Acoustic neuroma, fistula of round and oval window, oto-mandibular syndrome, Congenital cholesteatoma and maxillary sinusitis. Cases of Arachnoid cyst, Multiple sclerosis, abnormalities of base of skull and craniocervical region and cervical rib causing fluctuant hearing loss could not be detected. Aetio pathophysiology of all discussed.

An electrophoretic dot immunobinding assay and a modified western blotting method were established. The components and antigenity of the membranous labyrinth proteins of guinea pigs were analysed. There are the same epitopes between some components of the antigen, between the antigen and extractives of acoustic nerve, cochlear nuclei, kidney and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The antigen distributes in stria vascularis, spiral ligament, spiral ganglion, the organ of Corti and Reissner's membrane etc.

Three cases of small intestinal phytobezoar, suggested by sonography and later confirmed at surgery, are reported. Sonographic findings of bezoar were intraluminal mass presenting as an arc-like surface echo casting clear posterior acoustic shadow within the lumen of the dilated small bowel. Compression of the mass with a transducer induced fluid shift around the mass. We propose that diagnosis of bezoars can be suggested on the basis of sonographic findings.

We report the case of a baby with transient generalized stiffness noticeable from the first days of life, hyperreflexia, massive jerks in response to sudden tactile and acoustic stimuli, and long-lasting myoclonic jerks closely resembling epileptic seizures. The father and paternal grandfather both had hyperekplexia. At age 3 years, the child had normal psychomotor development and persistent abnormal startle response to unexpected sounds or touch.

In a series of over 500 cases of cerebellopontine angle tumors, 19 patients had bilateral neurinomas. Four of these tumors arose from the facial rather than the acoustic nerve. A conservative policy regarding surgery had been adopted in an effort to prevent hearing loss for as long as possible. Nevertheless, all patients operated on in this series are now totally deaf. The results of managing these patients surgically and conservatively are discussed.

Perforation of the footplate in otosclerosis can be performed accurately, when the large and high energetic CO2 laser focus is reduced to 0.5 mm in diameter by an aluminium diaphragm. The operation was performed on three dogs. BAEPs were evoked by bone-conducted acoustic stimuli. Hearing threshold was unchanged immediately after operation as well as after 2 and 6 weeks postoperatively. The new method has still to be performed in man.

Follow-up sonographic studies of five infants whose initial sonograms had displayed evidence for the diagnosis of cholelithiasis demonstrated spontaneous resolution of the gallbladder defects. These defects may have been caused by tumefactive sludge with acoustic shadowing. Whether sludge or gallstones are being imaged, in the absence of other clinical or imaging evidence of biliary tract disease, conservative (i.e., nonsurgical) management and serial sonograms are recommended.

A 47-year-old man presented with the clinical findings of acute cholecystitis. During hepatobiliary scintigraphy using Tc-99m DISIDA, a persistent photopenic defect was noted within the inferior portion of the liver in the region of the gallbladder. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed large gallstones with acoustic shadowing within a normal-sized gallbladder. Eleven large gallstones were found within a normal-sized intrahepatic gallbladder at surgery.

Impedance measurements (model Madsen ZO 72) were performed on 158 patients with otosclerosis and compared with the operative findings. It was found that otosclerosis shows in 95% of the cases a symmetrical tympanogram, type A. Its amplitude does not differ from the standard values: that means that otosclerosis does not correlate with a flattened amplitude of the tympanogram. In addition there is no correlation between the intraoperative finding and the ampitude. The stapedius reflex could not be elicitated by acoustic stimuli.

OBJECTIVE: Aphasia is a frequent sequela of stroke, affecting approximately 25%-40% of stroke survivors due to focal damage to language-related brain regions. In resource-constrained settings like India, timely screening is limited by the cost of neuroimaging and the time-intensive nature of conventional pen-and-paper assessments. This study presents a Computerized Hindi Aphasia Screening Platform offering various tasks (CHASP), a computer-based multimodal screening platform designed to objectively differentiate aphasic and non-aphasic post-stroke individuals from healthy controls.

OBJECTIVE: The present study sought to identify the cognitive features and speech features that might distinguish cerebral infarction patients by using artificial intelligence.
METHODS: A total of 117 patients were divided into the lacunar group, non-lacunar cerebral infarction group, and control group from Anhui No.2 Provincial People's Hospital.
