"They silently live in terror…" why sleep problems and night-time related quality-of-life are missed in children with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Children and adolescents with a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) are at high-risk for developing sleep problems (SPs) triggering daytime behavioral co-morbidities such as inattention, hyperactivity, and cognitive and emotional impairments. However, symptoms of sleep deprivation are solely associated with typical daytime diagnosis, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and treated with psychotropic medications. To understand how and why SPs are missed, we conducted qualitative interviews (QIs) with six parents and seven health care professionals (HCPs), and performed com

Second generation antipsychotics (SGAs) for non-psychotic disorders in children and adolescents: a review of the randomized controlled studies.

In children and adolescents the Second Generation Antipsychotics (SGAs) represent the class of psychotropic drugs whose use has grown more significantly in recent years: they are primarily used for treatment of patients with disruptive behavior disorders, mood disorders and pervasive developmental disorders or mental retardation. In order to compare the efficacy and tolerability of antipsychotics against placebo or each other, a systematic Medline/PubMed search for randomized, double blind studies on SGA in patients younger than 18 years of age at enrollment, was conducted. Papers on schizophr

Patterns of self-cutting: a preliminary study on differences in clinical implications between wrist- and arm-cutting using a Japanese juvenile detention center sample.

The present study was aimed to clarify the differences in clinical implications between wrist- and arm-cutting. Subjects were 201 delinquent adolescents (178 males and 23 females) who had been admitted to a detention center from February to March 2003. A self-reporting questionnaire and the Adolescent Dissociative Experience Scale (ADES) were given. Traumatic events and other self-injurious behavior were compared among four groups. In total, 33 (16.4%) subjects reported wrist- and/or arm-cutting. Of the females, 60.9% (n = 14) had experienced self cutting behaviors compared to 10.7% of males (

Examining the impact of ADHD, pharmacological treatment, and internet addiction on the parent-adolescent relationships quality.

INTRODUCTION: Parent-adolescent relationship quality is vital for youth's emotional and behavioral development; yet, it may be adversely impacted by neurodevelopmental disorders like attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study aimed to examine whether ADHD diagnosis and medication status are associated with differences in specific dimensions of parent-adolescent relationship quality - namely open communication, positive relationship quality, and negative relationship quality - while accounting for internet addiction as a contextual covariate. METHODS: A total of 155 adolescent

Concurrent Associations of Gaming Time and Problematic Gaming with Depressive Symptoms in Children and Adolescents: A Three-Wave Cohort Study with Complementary Machine Learning Classification.

Background/Objectives: Digital media use is integral to the daily lives of children and adolescents, intensifying concerns regarding potential associations with mental health. However, much of the literature linking gaming and depression is based on cross-sectional designs and does not adequately distinguish within-person change from between-person differences. This study examined concurrent associations between gaming use patterns, problematic gaming behavior, and depressive symptoms across three repeated assessment waves and, as a complementary analysis, evaluated the concurrent classificati

Social withdrawal and hippocampal volume among adolescents at clinical high risk for psychosis and healthy comparisons: The moderating role of neighborhood residential stability.

OBJECTIVE: Hippocampal volume (HV) reductions are a nonspecific marker of psychiatric vulnerability, including risk for psychosis. However, the behavioral and contextual factors that shape this association remain poorly understood. This study examined whether social withdrawal, a behavioral risk factor for psychosis, is associated with HV in adolescents, and whether neighborhood residential stability moderates this relationship. METHODS: Participants included 166 youth at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P) and 41 healthy comparisons (ages 12-19, 40.1% female, 51.2% White non-Hispanic) f

Sleep tracking and sleep hygiene counseling improve fatigue in pediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

OBJECTIVES: While the presence of fatigue and inadequate sleep are well-described in children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), little data exist on potential sleep improvement interventions. We aimed to determine if sleep tracking and sleep hygiene counseling can result in sleep behavior change and reduced fatigue in children/adolescents with IBD. METHODS: This was a single-center, prospective, randomized controlled trial. Patients 12-20 years old with IBD, in clinical remission, completed validated Pediatric Quality of Life-Multidimensional Fatigue Scales (PedsQL-MDFS). Those who were

A multi-level examination of impulsivity and links to suicide ideation among Native American youth.

BACKGROUND: Despite preliminary evidence that links impulsivity to suicide risk among Native American youth, impulsivity has not been directly studied in relation to suicide ideation (SI) or behaviors in this population. We examined indexes of rapid-response impulsivity (RRI) across multiple levels of analysis (self-report, behavioral, neurobiological) and associations with SI among Native American youth ages 9-10 in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. METHODS: Data from the sample (n = 284) included self-report (UPPS-P), behavioral (Stop Signal Task), and neurobiological (right

Functional tic-like behaviours during the COVID-19 pandemic: Follow-up over 12 months.

BACKGROUND: Functional tics are included in the wide spectrum of functional movement disorders (FMDs). Their distinction from organic tics is challenging because they both phenomenologically present common features. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in functional tic-like behaviours in vulnerable children and adolescents after social media exposure. This study explores the phenomenology and course of a cohort of newly diagnosed functional tic-like behaviors. METHODS: We analysed clinical data of 243 patients affected by tic disorders collected at outpatient Tourette Cli

Longitudinal Relations Between Childhood Maltreatment, Emotion Regulation Difficulties, and Suicidal Ideation and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: An 18-Month Investigation of Psychiatrically Hospitalized Adolescents.

Within the Dimensional Model of Adversity and Psychopathology, extant research shows that exposure to threat-including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse-is linked to psychopathology among adolescents; problems with emotion regulation may, at least in part, explain this association. Both theoretical and empirical work also suggests that emotion regulation difficulties-particularly access to emotion regulation strategies-may mediate the relation between threat and self-injurious thoughts and behavior, though no studies to date have explicitly tested this model. The current study tested relat

Association between mild traumatic brain injury, brain structure, and mental health outcomes in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Children that experience a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are at an increased risk of neural alterations that can deteriorate mental health. We test the hypothesis that mTBI is associated with psychopathology and that structural brain metrics (e.g., volume, area) meaningfully mediate the relation in an adolescent population. METHODS: We analyzed behavioral and brain MRI data from 11,876 children who participated in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. Mixed-effects models were used to examine the longitudinal association between mTBI and mental health outco

Factors impacting therapy duration in children and adolescents with Paradoxical Vocal Fold Movement (PVFM).

PURPOSE: Paradoxical Vocal Fold Movement (PVFM) may cause airway restriction and resulting dyspnea in the pediatric population. Therapy with a speech-language pathologist (SLP) is the primary treatment for children and adolescents diagnosed with Paradoxical Vocal Fold Movement (PVFM). This study examined treatment duration and factors predicting number of therapy sessions required. METHODS: Data were drawn from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Voice and Swallow Clinics Outcome Database. One hundred and twelve children and adolescents were included in this study. Participants were diagnosed

Diverse trauma profiles of youth in group care settings: A cluster analysis.

BACKGROUND: Many adolescents in group care have experienced higher rates of traumatic event exposure, behavior problems, and severe trauma sequelae compared to those outside of group care. Yet, little research has examined from a person-centered perspective their diverse trauma profiles and corresponding service needs. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study aimed to examine the heterogeneity of trauma-related profiles among youth in group care to highlight potential distinct service needs among subgroups. METHOD: Data from the Maltreatment and Adolescent Pathways Study identified 96 randomly sele

Recovery From Repeat Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in Adolescent Rats Is Dependent on Pre-injury Activity State.

Adolescents and young adults have the highest incidence of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI); sport-related activities are a major contributor. Roughly a third of these patients diagnosed with mTBI are estimated to have received a subsequent repeat mTBI (rTBI). Previously, animal studies have only modeled mTBI in sedentary animals. This study utilizes physical activity as a dependent variable prior to rTBI in adolescent rats by allowing voluntary exercise in males, establishing the rat athlete (rathlete). Rats were given access to locked or functional running wheels for 10 d prior to sham or

Why Are Orphaned Adolescents More Likely to Be HIV Positive? Distinguishing Between Maternal and Sexual HIV Transmission Using 17 Nationally Representative Data Sets in Africa.

PURPOSE: Why do orphans have higher rates of HIV infection than nonorphaned peers? Research consistently assumes that orphans acquire HIV primarily through sexual behavior, but infections may instead be due to maternal transmission. Although these two pathways have very different implications for HIV programs and policies, their relative contribution has not been previously examined. In this research, we compare the contribution of maternal and sexual transmission to HIV infection among orphans in Africa. METHODS: We use Demographic and Health Survey data for 21,463 women and 18,359 men from

Pharmacotherapy of Aggression in Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Aggression is a common, yet complex, behavioral complaint, and a frequent indication for referral to child and adolescent psychiatrist treatment. This article reviews the evidence supporting pharmacotherapy of aggression in youth, with a primary focus on impulsive aggression (the primary indication for this intervention). Relevant diagnostic considerations and consensus guidelines are discussed. METHODS: Articles examining the role of medications in the treatment of aggression in youth with pathological aggression were identified using PubMed and MEDLINE® databases over the past 15
