Domains of common mental disorders in women reporting intimate partner violence.

OBJECTIVE: to verify associations between the types of intimate partner violence and the domains of common mental disorders in women. METHOD: cross-sectional study with 369 women. The information was obtained through the instruments Self-Reporting Questionnaire and Conflict Tactic Scales. To analyze the data, Pearson's Chi-Square test, Fisher's exact test and Odds Ratio were used. RESULTS: women who reported physical abuse with and without sequela were respectively 2.58 and 3.7 times more likely to have symptoms of anxious depressed mood. The chances of experiencing symptoms of decreased vit

Moral transgression during the Vietnam War: a path analysis of the psychological impact of veterans' involvement in wartime atrocities.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Involvement in wartime combat often conveys a number of deleterious outcomes, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, hostility, aggression, and suicidal ideation. Less studied is the effect of engagement in wartime atrocities, including witnessing and perpetrating abusive violence. DESIGN AND METHODS: This study employed path analysis to examine the direct effects of involvement in wartime atrocities on hostility, aggression, depression, and suicidal ideation independent of combat exposure, as well as the indirect effects via guilt and PTSD symp

Violence against physicians in training. A Romanian perspective.

The main purpose of this study was to assess whether there are differences between perceived and actual aggressions directed towards medical trainees from different medical specialties and different stages of medical training, and to characterize various types of aggressions against physicians in training in Romania. A multi-institutional survey was conducted in order to assess the prevalence of perceived and actual violence during medical residents; it included a total number of 384 medical residents from various specialties. Thirty two cases declared perceived physical aggression, most often

Child sex moderates the association between negative parenting and childhood conduct problems.

Although multiple dimensions of negative parenting behavior are associated with childhood conduct problems (CP), there is relatively little research on whether the association is equally robust in boys and girls. To improve the specificity of current models of negative parenting and offspring CP, we explored the potential moderating role of child sex in a sample of 179 5- to 10-year-old ethnically diverse boys and girls with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who were assessed using multiple methods (i.e., rating scales, semistructured interviews) and informants (i.e.,

Multimethod assessment of psychopathology among DSM-IV subtypes of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: self-, parent, and teacher reports.

Using data based on self-, parent, and teacher reports, we assessed various aspects of psychopathology in a large sample of control children and those with ADHD. Confirmatory factor analysis was employed to extract response bias from latent constructs of aggression, anxiety, attention problems, depression, conduct disorder, and hyperactivity. These latent constructs were then entered into logistic regression equations to predict membership in control versus ADHD groups, and to discriminate between ADHD subtypes. Results of the regression equations showed that higher levels of attention problem

Are bi-directionally violent couples mutually victimized? A gender-sensitive comparison.

Mutual victimization in marriage was studied in a sample of clinic couples (N = 57) where both spouses reported partner aggression on an adapted version of the Conflict Tactics Scale (Straus, 1979). As predicted, wives sustained more injuries and were more negatively affected by their partner's physical aggression than did husbands. Multiple dimensions of aggression were used to identify subgroups of mutually victimized couples (e.g., frequency, severity of aggressive act[s], psychological impact, and severity of injury). The largest subgroup consisted of spouses who reported low levels of vic

Measuring caregiver and student detection of treatment effects: Sensitivity to changes in frequency.

For a behavior-change goal to be both useful and socially valid, relevant stakeholders must detect the level change specified by the goal. To evaluate behavior change that is detectable by consumers, we examined the minimum reduction in aggression at which undergraduate students and caregivers identified a treatment effect. Participants viewed scripted video recordings depicting varying levels of aggression and recorded whether each video was taken from before or during treatment. Across groups, most participants selected a video as a treatment session if it showed a 70% or greater reduction i

Unethical battlefield conduct reported by soldiers serving in the Iraq war.

Research involving military service members has shown a strong relationship between combat experiences and increased risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health problems. Comparatively little research has examined the relationship between combat experiences, PTSD, aggression, and unethical conduct on the battlefield, although news stories sometimes suggest links between unethical conduct and disorders such as PTSD. This study systematically examined whether unethical conduct is a proxy for aggression and whether specific combat experiences and PTSD are independently a

Female victimization and intimate partner violence after the May 12, 2008, Sichuan earthquake.

This study investigates the impact of the earthquake that occurred on May 12, 2008 in Sichuan, China on stressed families already experiencing domestic violence. We hypothesized that cumulative postdisaster stress would increase marital aggression and that the well-being of victims would deteriorate following the quake. A total of 186 women were recruited for this study. Results show that all types of family violence, including psychological aggression and physical violence between partners, increased after the earthquake. We provided preliminary evidence that psychological aggression was sign

Short-Term psychiatric stability after brivaracetam initiation in patients with Epilepsy: A prospective Observational study.

OBJECTIVE: Behavioral and psychiatric adverse effects are important considerations when selecting antiseizure medications for patients with epilepsy. Levetiracetam (LEV) may be associated with irritability and aggression, whereas brivaracetam (BRV) has been suggested to have a more favorable psychiatric tolerability profile. However, prospective evidence using validated psychiatric rating scales in routine clinical practice remains limited. This study evaluated changes in aggression, depressive symptoms, and daytime sleepiness after BRV initiation. METHODS: Adult patients with epilepsy who in

Mental health literacy among primary care providers in Hungary: a vignette-based survey.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined mental health literacy and predictors of disorder recognition among primary care providers (PCPs) in Hungary. METHODS: 208 PCPs in Hungary completed a survey assessing demographics, mental health stigma, and exposure to mental health (i.e., personal experiences and having a family member/friend with a mental health condition). Participants read six vignettes describing obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) harm/aggression subtype (OCD-Aggression), OCD order/symmetry subtype (OCD-Order), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), panic disor

Reduced social investigation and increased injurious behavior in transgenic 5xFAD mice.

Social withdrawal and agitation/aggression are common behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia presented by Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, with males exhibiting more aggressive behaviors than females. Some transgenic mouse models of AD also exhibit social withdrawal and aggression, but many of these models only recapitulate the early stages of the disease. By comparison, the 5xFAD mouse model of AD exhibits rapid, progressive neurodegeneration, and is suitable for modeling cognitive and behavioral deficits at early, mid-, and late-stage disease progression. Anecdotal reports sugge

Association between depression and hostile attribution bias in hostile and non-hostile individuals: An ERP study.

BACKGROUND: Hostility and aggression have been found to be highly prevalent among depressed patients and are associated with higher comorbidity and illness severity levels. Although negative interpretation biases are a fundamental element of cognitive models of depression, few studies have examined the specific biases in information processing, mainly the hostile attribution bias, found in hostile individuals who present depressive symptoms. METHOD: Using pre-collected data from a sample of 72 (male=41,6%, female=58,3%) undergraduate and community-based hostile (n = 26) and non-hostile (n = 4

Are Changes in Personality Traits and Alcohol Use Associated? A Cohort Study Among Young Swiss Men.

Objective: It is well known that certain personality traits are associated with alcohol use. Because less is known about it, we wished to investigate whether changes in alcohol use were longitudinally associated with changes in personality and in which direction the influence or causation might flow. Methods: Data came from the self-reported questionnaire answers of 5,125 young men at two time points during the Cohort study on Substance Use Risk Factors (C-SURF). Their average ages were 20.0 and 25.4 years old at the first and second wave assessments, respectively. Four personality traits were

Investigating possible causal effects of externalizing behaviors on tobacco initiation: A Mendelian randomization analysis.

Observational studies suggest childhood externalizing disorders are associated with increased smoking and earlier initiation. However, causality cannot be inferred from observational data alone. The current study uses two-sample MR to examine the causal relationship between externalizing behaviors and tobacco use. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with aggression were obtained from the Early Life Epidemiology Consortium (mean age 8), ADHD from the Integrative Psychiatric Research and Psychiatric Genomics Consortiums (age range 6-18), and tobacco initiation and age of onset from

A network analysis of the relationship between temperament characteristics and problem behaviors in preadolescents.

Temperament, defined as relatively stable, innate tendencies in emotional reactivity and self-regulation, is a robust correlate of childhood problem behaviors. However, while most studies focus on isolated symptoms, few have examined how specific temperamental traits simultaneously relate to the complex interactions between internalizing and externalizing systems. Using network analysis, this study explored the relationships among temperamental traits, internalizing problems (depressive symptoms), and externalizing problems (aggressive behavior) based on self-report data from 642 preadolescent

The Predictive Value of Criminogenic Needs on Institutional Misconduct in a Dutch Forensic Hospital.

According to the Risk-Need-Responsivity model, criminogenic needs are important in predicting violent behavior. Eight criminogenic needs are considered strong predictors: history of antisocial behavior, antisocial personality traits, criminal attitudes, criminal associates, substance abuse, family problems, poor work performance, and lack of involvement in prosocial leisure/recreation activities. The purpose of the current study was to examine whether seven criminogenic needs predict institutional misconduct in the first year of admission of Dutch patients who were admitted to a forensic hospi

Developmental pathways from preschool temper tantrums to later psychopathology.

Temper tantrums are sudden, overt negative emotional displays that are disproportionate to the eliciting event. Research supports that severe temper tantrums during the preschool period are associated with preschool psychopathology, but few studies have identified which characteristics of preschool tantrums are predictive of distal psychopathological outcomes in later childhood and adolescence. To examine this question, we used a prospective, longitudinal dataset enriched for early psychopathology. Participants (N = 299) included 3-to 6-year-old children (47.8% female) assessed for tantrums an

Self-harm.

This paper attempts to address self-harm from a psychoanalytic perspective in contemporary clinical practice and their relationship with aggression, impulsiveness, violence, and masochism. Self-harm is frequent in adolescents and young people, predominantly in feminine gender. The author describes the different manifestations of self-injurious behaviors in the contemporary clinic, its manifestation in adolescents and its relationship with psychopathology. Self-harm is a way of communication, through actions, to deal with psychic pain and with the self-vulnerability. Self-harm behaviors are a m
