Biological control of Botrytis cinerea in tomato and Fusarium graminearum in wheat using the novel species Burkholderia mycopellens and Burkholderia crassaminum.

The use of beneficial microbes to reduce plant stress upon fungal pathogens is a promising strategy for sustainable crop protection. In this study, we evaluated five novel Burkholderia strains for their capacity to mitigate Botrytis cinerea infection in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and Fusarium graminearum infection in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). All strains significantly suppressed B. cinerea infection symptoms in tomato plants, hallmarked by a smaller decrease in photosynthetic activity and chlorophyll content compared to infected control. Using a GFP-tagged F. graminearum strain, we s

Tempeh-type fermentation kinetics of tarwi (Lupinus mutabilis) and red quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) with Rhizopus oligosporus: effects on texture, metabolite profile and nutritional potential.

Tempeh is a solid-state fermented food traditionally produced from soybeans using fungi of the genus Rhizopus, which modify the nutritional and functional properties of the substrate. The search for alternative raw materials has increased interest in underutilized Andean crops such as tarwi (Lupinus mutabilis cv. Cholo Fuerte) and quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa cv. Pasankalla), recognized for their high nutritional value and potential for sustainable food development. This study investigated the growth kinetics of Rhizopus oligosporus during nine days of tempeh-type fermentation of tarwi and quino

Bottom-up control of coral reef sponges: for better and for worse.

Controversy over whether coral reef sponges are controlled bottom-up or top-down has distracted attention from more nuanced questions about what circumstances promote either bottom-up or top-down control, and how coral reef ecosystems are affected by what controls their sponges. Experiments now suggest that predators do not control coral reef sponges in their home habitat, shifting attention to effects of variations in sponge food supply. Comparing growth and survival of eleven of the most common and ubiquitous Caribbean coral reef sponge species on reefs in Belize and Panama differing in wate

Sanitation, antibiotics, and the end of the antibiotic era.

A decade after the publication of the highly influential O'Neill report, Tackling Drug-Resistant Infections Globally, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) continues to accelerate at an unprecedented rate. Despite being a cornerstone of global AMR strategies, antimicrobial stewardship has failed to reverse this trend. This failure reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of AMR as primarily a behavioural or prescribing problem, rather than an environmental one. A major driver of AMR is environmental pollution arising from the large-scale manufacture, release, and accumulation of antimicrobial substanc

Impacts of toxin production triggers on planktonic food web structure and environmental toxin loads: A theoretical approach.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) of toxic phytoplankton species are a prevalent and expensive issue worldwide, with toxin production from blooms impacting aquaculture, human health, and higher trophic levels. Despite widespread impacts, it remains uncertain why specific phytoplankton species produce toxins and how toxin production may be induced ('triggered') by ecological conditions. In this study, we develop an idealized theoretical nutrient-phytoplankton-zooplankton model to describe food web dynamics in response to toxin production by phytoplankton. We use our model to analyze three hypothetica

A novel simulation model to assess the impact of Aerobic-Anoxic biostimulation mediated BTEX migration in a coupled Vadose-Phreatic subsurface system.

Groundwater and soil pollution caused by BTEX (Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) is a threat to subsurface environment and bioremediation offers a promising cleanup strategy. This study presents a novel simulation model that integrates hydrogeochemical and microbial dynamics to assess BTEX migration in a coupled vadose-phreatic (CVP) subsurface for in-situ biostimulation of contaminated aquifers. A 2D Biostimulation-driven Vadose-Phreatic Migration (BioVPM) model is developed. The model considers vertical flow in the vadose zone and 2D flow in phreatic zone, while neglecting capillar

Nitrate reduction and iron (II) oxidation by subsurface bacteria from the Iberian Pyritic Belt: Insights into the biogeochemical cycles in this environment.

Nitrogen and iron are central to Earth's biogeochemical cycles. The Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB), a vast iron reservoir, hosts extremophilic microorganisms adapted to high metal and sulfur concentrations. This study investigates two isolates from the deep IPB subsurface, Citrobacter telavivensis T1.2D-1 and Stutzerimonas stutzeri T2.31D-1, evaluating their nitrate-reducing capacity and the role of iron in denitrification, with emphasis on nitrate-dependent ferrous iron oxidation (NDFO). Both species could reduce nitrate in sucrose-, lactate-, or acetate-fed medium, while their consortium enhanced

Hydrological inundation threshold regulates the carbon source-sink transition in unvegetated tidal flats.

Unvegetated tidal flats cover extensive areas of global coastlines, but their role in atmospheric CO2 exchange remains poorly understood. Here we investigate how hydrological regimes regulate carbon uptake in these ecosystems through a marsh organ experiment in the subtropical Zhangjiang Estuary, China that integrated sediment-atmosphere CO2 and CH4 flux measurements, porewater geochemistry, and metagenomic sequencing. We identified a site-specific hydrological transition in which sediment-atmosphere CO2 exchange shifted from a weak source to sustained net uptake under more frequent inundation

Separation of Lignin from Paulownia and Its Application in DES Gels.

In this study, binary and ternary DES systems were prepared using choline chloride (ChCl) with lactic acid (LA), glycerol (GL), urea, and acrylic acid (AA) to extract lignin from Paulownia. The chemical structure of lignin was analyzed to evaluate the structural changes induced by various DES systems, and the isolated lignin was used to prepare DES gels. The results showed that lignin extracted using different DES systems shares similarities in its basic structural framework, with all samples retaining an intact benzene ring structure. However, there are certain differences in the content of t

A predictive framework for assessing naproxen-mediated changes in Nitzschia dubia fucoxanthin levels via machine learning-driven dielectric sensing.

Naproxen (Nap), a widely used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, can disturb algal physiology under sufficiently high exposure conditions. In this study, a laboratory-scale machine learning (ML)-driven dielectric sensor framework was developed to estimate culture-level fucoxanthin (Fx) responses in the marine diatom Nitzschia dubia under acute Nap stress, using 48 averaged observations obtained from eight Nap concentrations over a 0-18 d cultivation period. A customized open-ended coplanar waveguide (CPW) probe measured dielectric responses (S11, ε'), over 30 kHz-3 GHz, with 735 MHz selecte

Metagenomics reveals the effects of potassium fertilizer gradients on soil phosphorus-cycling microbial communities and functional genes, and their relationship with yield.

The rational application of potassium (K) is essential for soil nutrient transformation in orchards. Microbial communities drive phosphorus (P) transformation and activation, yet their responses to potassium (K) gradients and the underlying regulation of functional potential remain unclear. Accordingly, a field trial was conducted on 7- to 8-year-old Korla pear trees to evaluate changes in microbial community structure and functional potential across topsoil (0-20 cm) and subsoil (40-60 cm) layers under different K gradients (0, 75, 150, and 225 kg/ha K2O). Results indicated that microbial com

The gasotransmitters hydrogen sulfide and nitric oxide independently regulate growth, physiology, and secondary metabolism in fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.).

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) is a highly valued aromatic herb known for its therapeutic, cosmeceutical, and pharmacological uses. The key secondary metabolites of fenugreek, including trigonelline and diosgenin, exhibit noteworthy antidiabetic and anticarcinogenic properties. The present study examines the putative roles of the signaling molecules, such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and nitric oxide (NO), in regulating plant growth and development. The foliar application at concentrations of 0, 25, 50, 100, and 200 μM significantly improved the physiological and agronomic performance o

Unveiling the Chemical Composition and Biological Activity of Extracts from the Antarctic Yeast Dioszegia sp. AL105 and Bannozyma sp. AL104.

The extreme Antarctic environment offers unique living conditions. The organisms inhabiting Antarctica have a specific metabolism through which they overcome the challenges of large temperature amplitudes, long periods of light or darkness, and intense UV radiation. Microorganisms are ubiquitous in Antarctica and have been the subject of intensive research in recent decades. In this manuscript, two yeast species were isolated from Antarctic habitats and identified as Dioszegia sp. AL105 (AL105) and Bannozyma sp. AL104 (AL104). The cultivation of these two species under submerged conditions wer

Warming outweighs nitrogen deposition in shaping rhizosphere microbial structure involved in carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling in Ambrosia trifida.

INTRODUCTION: Ambrosia trifida, a harmful invasive plant, poses significant ecological and economic threats and is expected to spread further under future warming and nitrogen deposition scenarios. According to plant-soil feedback and enhanced mutualist hypothesis, invasive plants may gain a competitive edge by recruiting specific microorganisms. However, little is known about the composition and functional potential of its rhizosphere microbiome. METHODS: In this study, we combined metagenomics with widely targeted metabolomics to investigate the interactions between root exudates and soil m

An overview of humic acid-based carbon dots: synthesis, characteristics and applications.

Humic acid is one of the most abundant natural organic carbon sources worldwide. In China alone, coal mining generates hundreds of millions of tons annually, yet most ends up as low-grade fertilizer or is simply discarded-high-value utilization remains minimal. Humic acid-based carbon dots (HACDs) offer a viable route to upgrade this cheap bulk byproduct into functional materials, aligning resource efficiency with green chemistry principles. HACDs are straightforward to synthesize, low-cost, water-soluble, and readily functionalized and have driven growing interest in sensing, catalysis, bioim

Climate change and poultry production in Africa: a systematic scoping review of climate resilience and adaptation strategies.

Climate change poses several challenges to the sustainability of poultry production in Africa, affecting both biological performance and economic viability within different agro-ecological zones. This scoping review synthesises existing literature on climate impacts, adaptation mechanisms, and policy frameworks across four representative African agro-ecological regions. The analysis revealed that climate stress factors such as heat stress, drought, and unpredictable rainfall have measurable impacts on poultry production systems across Africa. For example, in Tanzania, drought and irregular pre

Determinants of small vulnerable newborn births in two rural community-based cohorts in India: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: The Small Vulnerable Newborn (SVN) Consortium introduced the concept of SVN, combining preterm, low birth weight (LBW), and small for gestational age (SGA) into a single category. Limited data on the actual SVN burden and its determinants formed the basis of this study, where we estimated its incidence and associated factors in two distinct pregnant women cohorts in India. METHODS: The study followed pregnant women cohorts from Hodal, Haryana, and Lowairpoa, Assam, through their antenatal period until 12 months postpartum to identify adverse maternal and infant outcomes. Incidence

Mechanistic insights into polylactic acid and cadmium co-regulation of nitrogen dynamics in the pea-soil system via microbial drivers.

The increasing coexistence of microplastics and metals in agricultural soils poses a profound threat to ecosystem health, yet the mechanisms through which combined pollution affects nitrogen cycling remain poorly understood. This study investigated the influence of three polylactic acid (PLA) particle sizes (4 mm, 150 μm, and 500 nm) at a concentration of 1%, individually and in combination with cadmium (Cd, 3.0 mg/kg), on nitrogen transformation in the pea-soil system. Results showed that nano-PLA significantly promoted pea growth, for example, increasing biomass by 11.6% (3.19 g), compared t
