Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disorder characterized by compromised bone strength that predisposes individuals to increased fracture risk. Bone strength is determined by its material and structural properties. Bone mineral density (BMD) is a useful tool for diagnosis; however, this parameter provides information regarding only the quantity of mineral in bone, which is only one component of bone strength. Osteoporosis treatments have been shown to have beneficial effects on bone turnover, microarchitecture, and/or mineralization, all of which can help account for the reductions in fractur

The coincidence or association of some metabolic bone diseases is known although it occurs rarely. The authors present a very rare association of Paget's bone disease with primary hyperparathyroidism in a 65 year old male with overt Paget's disease of bone since 1985. For during five years the patient was treated symptomatically only. Later he developed a biochemical syndrome suspect from primary hyperparathyroidism with signs of preexisting Paget's disease of bone. The diagnostic and therapeutic approach is presented. After the removal of parathyroid adenoma, laboratory findings depicted rece

Clinical therapies developed for estrogen-deficiency-driven postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO) and related diseases, such as bone degeneration, show multiple adverse effects nowadays. Targeting senescent cells (SnCs) and the consequent senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) with a combination of dasatinib and quercetin (DQ) is a recently developed novel therapy for multiple age-related diseases. Herein, we found that estrogen deficiency induced-bone loss was attributed to a pro-inflammatory microenvironment with SASP secretions and accelerated SnC accumulation, especially senescent me

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the growth of soft tissue and bone in children with traumatic tooth loss or agenesis of teeth can be developed reliably, using a new technique of autogenous primary canine transplant.
STUDY DESIGN: A total of 10 patients (age range, 7-13 years) were treated either for trauma or for agenesis (n = 14 primary canine transplants). In addition to the clinical examination, patients were subjected to radiologic examinations with regard to root resorption, bone height, and soft tissue level.
RESULTS: With an average survival rate of 87%, th

Osteoporosis is a major public health problem, and as life expectancy and the world's population continue to increase will become even more important. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop and implement nutritional approaches and policies for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Patients with some chronic inflammatory diseases appear to be more likely to develop osteopenia, and in some cases earlier in life, which is of particular concern as the incidence of inflammatory diseases in the Western world is increasing. While the cause of bone loss in patients with inflammatory disease

The skeletal status of transplant recipients needs routine assessment both before and after organ transplantation for the following questions: 1) is the patient on risk for developing osteoporosis independently of transplantation? 2) are there signs of significant pre-transplantation bone disease? 3) does the patient develop post-transplantation osteopathy? Although biochemical markers of bone metabolism provide useful data to each of these questions, the complex metabolic pertubations seen in chronic organ failure make it mandatory to interpret biochemical findings only within the framework o

An 8-year-old boy suffered severe craniocerebral trauma with left-sided fronto-orbitobasal fracture. The CT scan showed minor subdural air inclusions. The child recovered well and had no clinical signs of aftereffects. Eight years after the accident, symptoms of intracranial pressure developed progressively with nuchal rigidity and elevated temperature. The CT showed an extensive left fronto-orbitobasal abscess. The intraoperative finding was a brain prolapse both into the frontal sinus and into the ethmoidal cavity with a large dura-bone defect at the site of the former fracture line, which w

The convergence of neuroscience and bone biology has led to the profound conceptualization of the "brain-bone axis," revealing the intricate connection between the central nervous system and bone metabolism. Central nuclei, defined as structures composed of neurons with similar functions, play a pivotal role in the regulation of bone metabolism. Research has demonstrated that central nuclei can modulate bone metabolism either directly via nerve fiber projections or indirectly through neuroendocrine pathways. Despite significant progress, the precise mechanisms by which central nuclei regulate

The bone repair niche, including the physiological and pathological microenvironment, is a complex system that interferes with various cellular/noncellular activities. Thus, a rational perspective of designing tunable biomaterials with the modulation of the bone microenvironment is in high demand in pre/clinical practice for the management of refractory bone defects in combination with severe bone diseases. Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials are emerging biomaterials for bone microenvironment engineering because of their inherent biocompatibility, osteo-inductivity, osteo-conductivity, opt

Patients with HIV can develop several complications that involve bone including low bone mineral density and osteoporosis, osteonecrosis, and rarely osteomalacia. Low bone mineral density leading to osteoporosis is the most common bone pathology. This may result from HIV infection (directly or indirectly), antiretroviral toxicity, or as a consequence of other co-morbidities. The clinical relevance of osteoporosis in HIV infection has been uncertain; however, fragility fractures are increasingly reported in HIV-infected patients. Further research is required to understand the pathogenesis of os

Autosomal recessive osteopetrosis is a rare disorder of bone resorption defect that results in generalized sclerotic bones and bone marrow failure. Allogeneic BMT is the only treatment for cure. One of the complications following a successful BMT is hypercalcemia that is a unique complication in this group of patients. We report a three-yr-old boy with osteopetrosis who developed hypercalcemia following the successful BMT. His maximal calcium level was 13.3 mg/dL. Markedly increased both bone formation and resorption markers were demonstrated along with hypercalcemia. These findings indicated

Guided bone regeneration is a new technique that evolved following the guided tissue regeneration procedure for regeneration of lost periodontium. The objective of guided bone regeneration is to promote bone formation in osseous deformities either before or in conjunction with endosseous implant placement. Osseous defects consist mainly of extraction sites, dehiscences or fenestrations, and localized ridge deformities. In addition, bone defects may either provide natural spacemaking or be nonspacemaking. A plethora of publications indicate that the guided bone regeneration technique can be use

Bone metastatic relapse can emerge years after cancer diagnosis, driven by the reactivation of disseminated tumor cells (DTCs) that remain dormant in secondary organs. This behavior is controlled by the tissue microenvironment. We developed a tuneable, skeletal progenitor-based engineered extramedullary (EM) bone model in mice that closely mimics endogenous bone and induces dormancy in metastatic breast cancer cells. Within EM bone, cancer cells remained quiescent, with occasional transient proliferative episodes. Because the model integrates with host vasculature and permits controlled releas

Objective. This paper describes a new method for measuring human bone density based on the measurement of bone electrical conductivity (BEC) using the well-known technique: electrical impedance tomography (EIT).Approach. The hypothesis is that BEC is directly related to bone mineral density. The proposed method consists of measuring the EIT, and then obtaining the conductivity values of the bones, and take this value to associate this one to a level of porosity. A model of skin, muscle, and bone was developed using computer simulation to vary the porosity in bones and obtain an inverse model i

The tumor microenvironment plays a central role in the onset and progression of cancer in the bone. Cancer cells, either from tumors originating in the bone or from metastatic cancer cells from other body systems, are located in specialized niches where they interact with different cells of the bone marrow. These interactions transform the bone into an ideal niche for cancer cell migration, proliferation, and survival and cause an imbalance in bone homeostasis that severely affects the integrity of the skeleton. During the last decade, preclinical studies have identified new cellular mechanism

Bone is a dynamic tissue that undergoes renewal and repair throughout life through the process of bone remodelling. Skeletal homeostasis is achieved through coupled and balanced bone resorption and bone formation. Several local and systemic factors regulate these processes, including sex hormones. Estrogenes and androgens influence growth, maturation and maintenance of bone mass. Sex homones act on bone through multiple mechansims. Sex hormones influence synthesis and secretion of many growth factors and cytokines, and play therefore a central role in the regulation of bone metabolism. The loc

Ilizarov applied revolutionary methods for salvaging limbs with severe congenital, posttraumatic, or other acquired deformities. His methods, which use a universal system of ring external fixators with tensioned transosseous wires, were developed over the past 35 years at his institute in Kurgan, USSR. These noninvasive techniques have proved successful in over 300,000 patients (adults and children) treated for bone shortening and intercalary deficiency, angulatory and rotational malalignment, active infection, ischemia, joint contractures, and nonunions. Bone transportation involves moving a

Primary oxalosis is a rare congenital disorder. The excessive oxalate biosynthesis induces deposits in many organs, particularly in kidney and bone. The late onset of primary oxalosis is reported in a 50-year-old man. His chronic renal failure was treated by maintenance hemodialysis for 3 years. He then developed a diffuse bone disease with osteosclerosis and roentgenographic features of hyperparathyroidism. A parathyroidectomy was performed, with debatable improvement of bone lesions. Laboratory results and histologic and histomorphometric studies before and after parathyroidectomy suggest a

Bone defects are primarily the result of high-energy trauma, pathological fractures, bone tumor resection, or infection debridement. The treatment of bone defects remains a huge clinical challenge. The current treatment options for bone defects include bone traction, autologous/allogeneic bone transplantation, gene therapy, and bone tissue engineering amongst others. With recent developments in the field, composite scaffolds prepared using tissue engineering techniques to repair bone defects are used more often. Among the various composite scaffolds, hydrogel exhibits the advantages of good bi
