Traumatic Intrusion of a Maxillary Canine Tooth: 3 Cases.

Of the six recognized types of tooth luxation injuries, intrusion generally carries the most guarded long-term prognosis due to the high risk of complications, including root resorption, ankylosis, marginal bone loss, and pulp canal obliteration or necrosis. The degree of traumatic intrusion and stage of root development affects the outcome and treatment planning. This report describes the clinical history, oral and radiographic examination findings, and rationale for surgical extraction in 2 dogs and 1 cat with traumatic intrusion of a maxillary canine tooth.

Diagnosis and management of root fractures and periodontal ligament injury.

Although root fractures are among the less common oral injuries (6 percent), a careful diagnostic evaluation of such injuries is required to arrive at an appropriate treatment plan. The position of the fracture in the root will determine the proper management. The problem of luxation due to trauma often involves the use of dental splints, which, if not properly designed, may cause root resorption, loss of alveolar bone, pulpal necrosis and pulp canal obliteration. The guidelines for the type of splint to use and conditions under which it should be placed are presented.

[Value of transdermal hormone substitution for postmenopausal osteoporosis].

The osteoporosis is a major public health problem occurring primarily among the postmenopausal women. The relationship to the loss of ovarian function is undoubtful. The consequence of this knowledge is to substitute the hormone deficiency. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is effective with oral, subcutaneous, parenteral, and transdermal application. The transdermal hormone replacement therapy for prevention and therapy (early phase) of postmenopausal osteoporosis is effective and sure. The osteoprotective effect was demonstrated in multiple studies. The effectiveness of the HRT can be demons

[Deep bite correction in adult patients].

Excessive occlusal force caused by deep bite is an etiology of alveolar bone resorption as well as premature loss of permanent teeth. Deep bite correction in adult patients should comprise of intrusion and/or proclination of anterior teeth in order to prevent skeletal alteration and relapse. The objective of the article was to present indication and mechanics of intrusion and proclination of anterior teeth with a case report of the patient who had a problem of masticatory system especially temporomandibular joint, cuspid protection system and deep bite.

HSC70 mediated autophagic degradation of oxidized PRL2 is responsible for osteoclastogenesis and inflammatory bone destruction.

Inflammation leads to systemic osteoporosis or local bone destruction, however, the underlying molecular mechanisms are still poorly understood. In this study, we report that PRL2 is a negative regulator of osteoclastogenesis and bone absorption. Mice with PRL2 deficiency exhibit a decrease in bone volume and an increase in osteoclast numbers. PRL2 negatively regulates RANKL-induced reactive oxygen species production through the activation of RAC1, thus PRL2 deficient osteoclast precursors have both increased osteoclast differentiation ability and bone resorptive capacity. During inflammation,

Successful management of spontaneous bone regeneration after jaws cystectomy using PRGF approach; case series.

In the jaws, the healing process of bone defects occurs differently compared with other anatomical sites where healing is done by the formation of scar tissue. This is due to physiological bone remodeling and continuous bone resorption and apposition. In the case of large cysts, there is an increased risk of postoperative infection due to the retraction of the blood clot on the bony walls. The use of plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF), with or without autologous bone addition, for filling the cystic cavities is beneficial not only for its antimicrobial effect, but also due to simultaneously

Hematopoietic Stem Cells in Neural-crest Derived Bone Marrow.

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in the endosteum of mesoderm-derived appendicular bones have been extensively studied. Neural crest-derived bones differ from appendicular bones in developmental origin, mode of bone formation and pathological bone resorption. Whether neural crest-derived bones harbor HSCs is elusive. Here, we discovered HSC-like cells in postnatal murine mandible, and benchmarked them with donor-matched, mesoderm-derived femur/tibia HSCs, including clonogenic assay and long-term culture. Mandibular CD34 negative, LSK cells proliferated similarly to appendicular HSCs, and differ

Novel biological markers of bone: from bone metabolism to bone physiology.

Biochemical markers of bone turnover have been used for decades in the management of bone diseases, to assess the prognosis of these conditions and to monitor treatments. The new markers, however, also reflect specific physiological mechanisms in the bone or other organs. Periostin may be more specific to the periosteum; cathepsin K is an osteoclastic enzyme that may be involved in the cardiovascular system and joints; Dickkopf-1 is involved in bone formation and vascular calcification; sclerostin is a major regulator of bone formation in response to mechanical loading and may also play a role

Unbiased stereologic estimation of the spatial distribution of Paget's disease in the human temporal bone.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that Paget's disease of bone and otosclerosis may share a myxoviral etiology. However, the association between virus infection and pathologic bone remodeling is still controversial. The aim of this study was to estimate the spatial distribution of pagetic bone remodeling around the inner ear space and to compare it with that of otosclerosis in a contemporary context of temporal bone dynamics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From the temporal bone collection of Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, 15 of 29 temporal bones with Paget's disease were selected to obtain an

Bone formation as a potential motive force of tooth eruption in the rat molar.

The objectives of this anatomical study were to (1) determine if significant bone growth occurs in the base of the alveolar bony crypt of the first mandibular molar to move the tooth through the eruption pathway; (2) determine if the osteogenesis in the crypt correlates with the published chronological gene expression of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) in the dental follicle; and (3) determine chronologically and regionally the crypt bone activity. To accomplish this, the alveolar bony crypts of rat mandibular molars from postnatal days 3 to 18 were processed and examined by scanning elec

Mathematical model predicts a critical role for osteoclast autocrine regulation in the control of bone remodeling.

Bone remodeling occurs asynchronously at multiple sites in the adult skeleton and involves resorption by osteoclasts, followed by formation of new bone by osteoblasts. Disruptions in bone remodeling contribute to the pathogenesis of disorders such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and Paget's disease. Interactions among cells of osteoblast and osteoclast lineages are critical in the regulation of bone remodeling. We constructed a mathematical model of autocrine and paracrine interactions among osteoblasts and osteoclasts that allowed us to calculate cell population dynamics and changes in bone

Regulation of vitamin C transporter in the type 1 diabetic mouse bone and bone marrow.

A number of studies have revealed that Type I diabetes (T1D) is associated with bone loss and an increased risk of fractures. T1D induces oxidative stress in various tissues and organs. Vitamin C plays an important role in the attenuation of oxidative stress; however, little is known about the effect of T1D induced oxidative stress on the regulation of vitamin C transporter in bone and bone marrow cells. To investigate this, T1D was induced in mice by multiple low dose injections of streptozotocin. We have demonstrated that endogenous antioxidants, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide d

The role and mechanisms of bone microenvironment regulators in osteoporosis: novel intervention strategies for addressing the challenges of aging.

Osteoporosis is an increasingly important global health concern, particularly in aging populations, with prevalence rising markedly after the age of 60. Age-related alterations in the bone microenvironment play a pivotal role in disrupting skeletal homeostasis. Regulators of the bone microenvironment contribute centrally to osteoporosis pathogenesis by modulating bone remodeling through multiple, intersecting mechanisms. Accumulating evidence indicates that aging is accompanied by reduced levels of protective factors, such as osteoprotegerin and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), alongside in

Latest developments in Paget's disease of bone.

Paget's disease of bone is characterised by focal increases in osteoclastic bone resorption coupled to increased but disorganised bone formation. It is a relatively rare disease affecting up to 1% of individuals in the United Kingdom, but many cases are not diagnosed clinically. The most common presentation is with musculoskeletal pain which in some cases is due to increased bone turnover, but which can also be due to complications such as bone deformity, nerve compression syndromes and osteoarthritis. Predisposition to Paget's disease is regulated by pathogenic variants in or close to genes t

[Latest Findings on the Role of RUNX1 in Bone Development and Disorders].

Runt-related transcription factor (RUNX1) is a transcription factor closely involved in hematopoiesis. RUNX1 gene mutation plays an essential pathogenic role in the initiation and development of hematological tumors, especially in acute myeloid leukemia. Recent studies have shown that RUNX1 is also involved in the regulation of bone development and the pathological progression of bone-related diseases. RUNX1 promotes the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into chondrocytes and osteoblasts and modulates the maturation and extracellular matrix formation of chondrocytes. The expression of

Pathophysiology and Therapeutic Management of Bone Loss in Patients with Critical Illness.

Patients with critical illnesses are at higher risk of comorbidities, which can include bone mineral density loss, bone turnover marker increase, and fragility fractures. Patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) have a higher risk of bone fractures. Since hypermetabolism is a characteristic of ICU patients, such patients are often rapidly affected by systemic deterioration, which often results in systemic wasting disease. Major risk factors for ICU-related bone loss include physical restraint, inflammation, neuroendocrine stress, malnutrition, and medications. A medical history of crit

Use of multiple acoustic wave modes for assessment of long bones: model study.

Multiple acoustic wave mode method has been proposed as a new modality in axial bone QUS. The new method is based on measurement of ultrasound velocity at different ratio of wavelength to the bone thickness, and taking into account both bulk and guided waves. It allows assessment of changes in both the material properties related to porosity and mineralization as well as the cortical thickness influenced by resorption from inner layers, which are equally important in diagnostics of osteoporosis and other bone osteopenia. Developed method was validated in model studies using a dual-frequency (1

Osteopetrosis with Typical Radiological Findings: A Report of a Rare Case.

BACKGROUND: Osteopetrosis is a rare inherited disease caused by a lack of osteoclastic bone resorption, resulting in increased bone mass with insufficient mechanical strength. Patients usually present with complications such as pathologic fractures, cranial neuropathies, and bone marrow failure. Diagnosis is based on suggestive clinical and imaging findings, with genetic testing to confirm diagnosis and identify the subtype. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient is an eight-year-old girl who came to our hospital with complaints of bilateral arm swelling and visual disturbances for four years and a h

Immediate Implant and Customized Healing Abutment Promotes Tissues Regeneration: A 5-Year Clinical Report.

Significant alveolar bone resorption follows tooth extraction. Immediate implant placement alone is not sufficient to prevent this phenomenon. The present study aims at reporting the clinical and radiologic outcome of an immediate implant with a custom healing abutment. In this clinical case, a fractured upper first premolar was replaced by an immediate implant and a customized healing abutment designed on the perimeter of the extractive alveolus. After 3 months, the implant was restored. The facial and interdental soft tissue was maintained with appreciable success after 5 years. The pre-and

GLUCOCORTICOIDS IN CHRONIC DISEASE: THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE BONE.

Despite the advent of more targeted therapies, glucocorticoids (steroids) remain in chronic use (defined as > 3 months or more) by an estimated 0.5% of the population. Steroids yield symptomatic benefits for systemic and local inflammation as well as disease-modifying properties in rheumatoid arthritis, the most common disorder for their chronic use. Despite their many benefits, steroids have been associated with a myriad of common side effects. Observational studies of steroid safety are limited by confounding by indication, and randomized controlled trials have been too short and too small t
