Women and birth : journal of the Australian College of Midwives2025eng
PROBLEM: Despite national guidelines for managing gestational weight gain (GWG), little is known about their integration into routine midwifery practice.
BACKGROUND: Unhealthy GWG is associated with serious outcomes for both mothers and babies. Despite established guidelines, and midwives being well-positioned to manage GWG, many women do not achieve healthy GWG. Understanding the factors that influence GWG care is critical to improve midwifery practice.
AIM: To examine midwives' implementation of GWG-related practices and key factors associated with adherence to national guidelines.

Skeletal muscle tissue acts as a functional unit for physical movements, energy metabolism, thermogenesis, and metabolic homeostasis. In this literature review, the underlying mechanisms of skeletal muscle atrophy and the prevention strategies, including vigorous training and nutritional modifications are focused. Furthermore, the comparative analysis of multiple interventions is briefly explained. Ageing is an inevitable process often associated with cognitive impairment and physical decline due to muscular atrophy. Skeletal muscle atrophy is characterized by low muscle mass due to multiple u

Fibromyalgia is a chronic musculoskeletal pain condition affecting 2% to 8% of the population. Most people with fibromyalgia experience poor sleep, and sleep problems consistently predict pain severity. Given the bidirectional relationship between sleep and pain, improving sleep may reduce fibromyalgia pain. This review identified trials of sleep-focused pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions to evaluate whether they improved pain outcomes for adults with fibromyalgia. A systematic search of 7 electronic databases, 2 trial registries, and the reference lists of related studies re

This study investigated physiological responses during professional competitions by measuring heart rate variability (HRV) and salivary α-amylase and cortisol in elite archers. Based on the vagal tank theory, we examined psychophysiological dynamics and assessed differences in HRV and salivary biomarkers between high- and low-scoring matches to evaluate their association with performance. Eight elite archers (four male, four female) participated, with data collected across 184 matches of the Chinese Enterprise Archery League. HRV was recorded pre- and during matches, and salivary α-amylase and

Fear of flying affects up to 40 % of the global population, often leading to avoidance behaviors that significantly restrict personal and professional activities. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a well-established treatment, with exposure therapy as the gold-standard approach to reducing avoidance. Exposure therapy can be delivered through various methods, including virtual reality environments or traditional techniques such as two-dimensional (2D) videos, photographs, imagination, or real-life situations. While Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) and 2D video exposure share similarities,

Patient engagement and shared decision-making (SDM) between patients and clinicians is the foundation of patient-centered care. It aims to reach a treatment option that fits the patient's preference and is guideline-concordant. We sought to evaluate the possible causes and outcomes of patient's non-guideline-concordant care choices. Using a retrospective analysis of the medical records of patients who underwent cryoablation for small renal masses between January 2010 and January 2023. Inclusion criteria were patients with renal tumor(s) who underwent cryoablation which was not recommended by t

BACKGROUND: The conversion of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer's disease (AD) is related to various factors. The causal relationships among these factors remain unclear. This study aims to investigate pathways of the progression by using causal analysis and build a predictive model with high accuracy.
METHODS: 162 MCI patients were recruited from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative database. 68 patients progressed to AD. 94 patients did not convert to AD. We captured standard T1-weighted images, processed them for feature extraction, and selected relevant features usin

BACKGROUND: Treatment resistant depression (TRD) is a subset of major depressive disorder (MDD) in which symptoms do not respond to front line therapies. In older adults, the assessment and treatment of TRD is complicated by psychosocial risk factors unique to this population, as well as a relative paucity of research.
METHODS: Narrative review aimed at (1) defining TRLLD for clinical practice and research; (2) describing psychosocial risk factors; (3) reviewing psychological and non-pharmacological treatments; (4) discussing the role of clinical phenotyping for personalized treatment; and (5

BACKGROUND: There is no molecular test for Alzheimer's disease (AD) using self-collected samples, nor is there a definitive molecular test for AD. We demonstrate an accurate and potentially definitive TempO-Seq® gene expression test for AD using fingerstick blood spotted and dried on filter paper, a sample that can be collected in any doctor's office or can be self-collected.
OBJECTIVE: Demonstrate the feasibility of developing an accurate test for the classification of persons with AD from a minimally invasive sample of fingerstick blood spotted on filter paper which can be obtained in any d

BACKGROUND: Hypoparathyroidism (HypoPT) is characterized by hypocalcemia and undetectable/inappropriately low PTH. Post-surgical HypoPT (PS-HypoPT) is the most common cause. Patients with PS-HypoPT present neuropsychological symptoms, probably due to the PTH deprivation in the central nervous system (CNS). However, these mechanisms are still not elucidated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of PTH deprivation on CNS in an animal model of PS-HypoPT via a cognitive/behavioral assessment approach.
METHODS: A surgical rat model of PS-HypoPT was obtained and treated with calcium to
