Rehabilitation and stoma care: addressing the psychological needs.

Stoma surgery may be required for many reasons. The circumstances in which intervention is required, with possible permanent changes to the patient's conventional body image and lifestyle, will influence psychological recovery (Borwell, 1997; Black, 2000). Within a diverse multicultural society, addressing the individual psychological problems of the effects of mutilating surgery due to acute/chronic illness can be particularly challenging for health professionals. This can be further compounded if the patient has a physical or mental disability. Stoma care nurses play a vital role in supporti

Prenatal Education for Pregnant Parents on Opioid Agonist Therapy in Newfoundland and Labrador: A Qualitative Study.

Women on opioid agonist therapy often enter labour with limited information about neonatal withdrawal, newborn care, and hospital routines. Stigma and fear of child protection involvement can further limit communication. This study explored parents' information needs regarding opioid agonist therapy and newborn care. Seven virtual in-depth interviews were conducted between December 2020 and April 2021. Participants described inconsistent prenatal education on neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome, hospitalization, and newborn care. Concerns about NICU admission, child protection involvement, dos

Implementation of mobile medical units for naloxone distribution and MOUD linkage in Ohio's HEALing Communities Study: a community case study.

UNLABELLED: Naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal drug, and medication for opioid use disorder have been found to effectively combat opioid-related overdose and death. However, cost and access remain considerable barriers for many individuals at the highest risk of opioid-related overdoses. Similarly, many struggle to access medications for opioid use disorder because of the limited availability of treatment facilities and inadequate transportation options. Within the broader HEALing Communities Study, some Ohio communities elected to use mobile medical units to support delivery of naloxone an

Legitimizing AIDS as a Disability: The AIDS and Disability Action Project in British Columbia, 1987-1991.

In 1987, the British Columbia Coalition of the Disabled launched the AIDS and Disability Action Project. This article studies phase one of the project, undertaken from 1987 through 1991, to trace how the Coalition educated the disability community about HIV/AIDS, advocated for HIV/AIDS to be recognized as a disability, and pushed for cooperation between the HIV/AIDS and disability movements. Accordingly, it analyzes the research reports, educational materials, and conference presentations produced by and for the Coalition during this time. A critical evaluation of these materials demonstrates

From Awareness to Understanding: A Knowledge-Focused Framework for Parkinson's Disease Communication.

The 2024 passage of the National Plan to End Parkinson's Act promises federal coordination and resources, creating a pivotal moment to sharpen public communication. Building on this opportunity means addressing unique challenges associated with Parkinson's disease, including the subtle and complex nature of symptoms, a public image dominated by a "tremor-only, older white male" stereotype, and uneven access to specialty care. These factors complicate early detection, stigma reduction, and equitable service use. Drawing on stigma research and communication science, this commentary reviews recen

Integrating Ethics in Public Health Guideline Development: Case Study of Guidelines on Respiratory Isolation for Persons With Tuberculosis in Community Settings.

Public health interventions often involve explicit trade-offs in which the health of the many must be weighed against burdens imposed on individuals. We describe development of public health guidelines for respiratory isolation in community settings for persons with tuberculosis. While stopping the spread of disease is a core moral imperative in public health, the duty to prevent disease transmission does not supersede all other considerations. Community well-being must be balanced with individual well-being, liberty, and social justice. In response to these challenges, the National Tuberculos

A dual-ring network design for the fast orbit feedback system of the storage ring.

Building reliable fast orbit feedback (FOFB) systems to offer high stability of the beam orbit becomes more challenging for the diffraction-limited storage ring due to the smaller beam size. The beam position measurement and control (BPMC) processor has been developed to streamline the FOFB system architecture by integrating BPM (Beam Position Monitor) electronics and an orbit feedback controller. This paper designs a hierarchical dual-ring network topology based on BPMC processors using parameters derived from the storage ring of the Hefei Advanced Light Facility. To reduce latency and preven

Using the "Media as Mediator" Approach to Understand the Influence of Communication Channel Trust on COVID-19 Protective Behaviors: England, January 2022.

In a secondary analysis, we examine how trust in pro-recommendation versus alternative communication channels mediated effects of demographic, personality, lifestyle, and political variables on COVID-19 protective behavior in England. In so doing, we adapt the media-as-mediator approach to the pandemic context. Respondents reported that family, close friends, primary care medical providers, and mainstream news media were relatively supportive of public health recommendations, and social media friend networks, faith/community groups, alternative news sites, and alternative health practitioners

The gait1415+2 OpenSim musculoskeletal model of transfemoral amputees with a generic bone-anchored prosthesis.

This short communication presents the gait1415+2 musculoskeletal model, that has been developed in OpenSim to describe the lower-extremity of a human subject with transfemoral amputation wearing a generic lower-limb bone-anchored prosthesis. The model has fourteen degrees of freedom, governed by fifteen musculotendon units (placed at the contralateral and residual limbs) and two generic actuators (one placed at the knee joint and one at the ankle joint of the prosthetic leg). Even though the model is a simplified abstraction, it is capable of generating a human-like walking gait and, specifica

Oppression by omission: An analysis of the #WhereIsTheInterpreter hashtag campaign around COVID-19 on Twitter.

Critical to managing a crisis such as COVID-19 is the propagation of information to all vulnerable populations. Despite guidelines regarding communicating with people with differing accessibility needs during crises, some often find their needs unmet. Following a lack of assisted communications for d/Deaf people during the COVID-19 pandemic, a Twitter hashtag campaign, #WhereIsTheInterpreter, was launched in the UK, protesting the lack of accessibility during official press briefings around the epidemic. The campaign received support from across the globe. This study analyzes the discourse aro

Using geographic information systems to assess community-level vulnerability to housing insecurity in rural areas.

Research examining homelessness in rural areas has been sparse. The current study aims to expand conceptions of rural homelessness by mapping community-level risk factors related to housing insecurity. Geographic information systems (GIS) techniques were used to map the distribution of select community-level risk indicators in the State of Maine. Three methodological choices related to this process are demonstrated: (1) selection and distribution of housing insecurity risk indicators; (2) use of location quotients; and (3) use of spatial lags. After examining and mapping selected risk factors

Bacterial meningitis and COVID-19: a complex patient journey.

A woman in her 70s presented to the emergency department with fever, fluctuating cognition and headache. A detailed examination revealed neurological weakness to the lower limbs with atonia and areflexia, leading to a diagnosis of bacterial meningitis, alongside a concurrent COVID-19 infection. The patient required critical care escalation for respiratory support. After stepdown to a rehabilitation ward, she had difficulties communicating due to new aphonia, hearing loss and left third nerve palsy. The team used written communication with the patient, and with this the patient was able to sign

Development and Validation of the Transgender Inclusive Behavior Scale (TIBS).

Transgender-inclusive behaviors are actions and communication supporting transgender individuals. Examples include using language not reinforcing the gender binary, asking for and using correct pronouns, creation of spaces that welcome members of the transgender community, and acknowledging cisgender (non-transgender) privilege. A survey was developed measuring this behavior in individuals to examine the impact of transgender-inclusive behavior and the potential effect of interventions on promoting inclusive behavior. Data were collected utilizing an online survey (N = 1,051). The sample was s

Dental implants after the use of bichat's buccal fat pad for the sealing of oro-antral communications. A case report and literature review.

Oro-antral communications are frequent complications in oral surgery, and generally occur after molar extractions, maxillary sinus elevations or dental implant procedures. The presence of these defects may increase the morbidity and often need a surgical approach. The present report describes an oro-antral communication in a 52-year-old female who presented a 2 week-course of painless nasal obstruction and rhinorrea after a right maxillary sinus floor elevationwith simultaneous dental implant placement. Based on the anamnesis, clinical examination and a computed tomographyof the paranasal sinu

Operational aspects of SO2 removal and microbial population in an integrated-bioreactor with two bioreaction zones.

An integrated-bioreactor, which consisted of a suspended zone and an immobilized zone, was applied to treat gases containing SO2. The removal of SO2 in suspended zone differed slightly from that in immobilized zone. The influences of operational aspects such as SO2 load, temperature, and pH on integrated-bioreactor performance and bacterial community composition were investigated. The synergistic action of the two zones led to effective reduction of SO2, and the total removal efficiencies with the inlet concentration of 91-117 mg/m3, were over 85 % in steady state. Social ecology of child soldiers: child, family, and community determinants of mental health, psychosocial well-being, and reintegration in Nepal.

This study employed a social ecology framework to evaluate psychosocial well-being in a cross-sectional sample of 142 former child soldiers in Nepal. Outcome measures included the Depression Self Rating Scale (DSRS), Child Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Scale (CPSS), and locally developed measures of functional impairment and reintegration. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to examine the contribution of factors at multiple levels. At the child level, traumatic exposures, especially torture, predicted poor outcomes, while education improved outcomes. At the family level, conflict-re
