Hormonal contraceptive use and the prevalence of endometriotic lesions at different regions within the peritoneal cavity.

Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent disease that can lead to chronic pain and subfertility. Endometriotic lesions found in different locations are heterogeneous and may represent a collection of related but distinct conditions. Whether there is a relationship between hormonal contraceptive (HC) use and endometriosis is still controversial. The purpose of this study was to determine whether HC use affected the prevalence of endometriotic lesions differently based on lesion location. Data was retrospectively collected from 161 patients presenting to the Berne University Women's Hospital betwe

[Pharmacological, metabolic and clinical aspects of new oral contraceptive associations containing natural estrogens].

Introduction of new compounds containing natural estrogens represented a major development in the field of hormonal contraception. Micronized estradiol (E2) and its estere valerate (EV), is more easily metabolized by the liver than ethynylestradiol (EE). This causes minimal metabolic impact, but the weak estrogenic activity needs not be antagonized by androgenic progestin and requires progestin capable to stabilize the endometrium. Dienogest (DNG), an antiandrogenic progestin with a short half-life, is associated with estradiol valerate (EV) in a quadriphasic fashion. In comparison to EE/levon

Different Pearl Indices in studies of hormonal contraceptives in the United States: impact of study population.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the impact of subject characteristics on efficacy as measured by the Pearl Index (PI) in clinical trials and to make study populations similar by matching. METHODS: Our analysis used US data from four large Phase III studies. We compared results from one fertility control patch study with pooled data from three studies with virtually identical design on oral hormonal contraceptives. First, we identified three characteristics that had the most impact on the PI. Second, we used these three variables and matched subjects from the patch study with those from the oral contrac

Effect of hormonal contraceptives on lipid profile and the risk indices for cardiovascular disease in a Ghanaian community.

BACKGROUND: Hormonal contraceptives (HCs) have been shown to alter lipid profile among various population groups with different patterns of dyslipidemia and cardiovascular (CV) risk. The study aimed at determining the lipid profile pattern and CV risk in a Ghanaian cohort. METHODS: Purposive random sampling was done. Forty-seven and 19 cases were on oral contraceptives (OCs) and injectable contraceptives (ICs), respectively; five were on subdermal implant. Twenty-four non-users served as controls. Biodemographic and lipid profiles were determined. Total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprot

No association between body size and frequency of sexual intercourse among oral contraceptive users.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to describe the frequency of sexual intercourse and whether body size was associated with weekly sexual intercourse among a diverse group of women using oral contraceptives. METHODS: This longitudinal prospective cohort study recruited participants (n = 185) from several clinics in Charlotte, NC. Body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were used as measures of body size and sexual intercourse frequency was determined from self-reported information provided on daily diaries. Mean monthly frequencies of sexual intercourse were calculated and linear mixed mod

Comparison of postprandial lipemia between women who are on oral contraceptive methods and those who are not.

BACKGROUND: Postprandial Lipemia (PPL) is a physiological process that reflects the ability of the body to metabolize lipids. Even though the influence of oral contraceptives (OC) on PPL is not known, it is a known fact that their use increases fasting lipid values. OBJECTIVE: To compare the PPL between women who are on OC and those who are not. METHODS: A prospective analytical study which assessed eutrophic women, aged between 18 and 28 years old, who were irregularly active and with fasting triglycerides ≤ 150 mg/dL. They were divided into two groups: oral contraceptive group (COG) and no

Hormonal contraceptive choice for women with PCOS: a systematic review of randomized trials and observational studies.

INTRODUCTION: This paper provides a critical review of the data concerning the effects of combined hormonal contraceptives (CHC) for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The aim is to determine the best treatment option for each PCOS phenotype. STUDY DESIGN: A literature search of the PubMed database was conducted for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and observational studies published in any language prior to October 2013. Hyperandrogenism (HA) is the essential diagnostic criterion for PCOS and is frequently associated with insulin resistance (IR) or obesity. The combinations of these criteria

Candida vaginitis during contraceptive use: the influence of methods, antifungal susceptibility and virulence patterns.

No consensus exists about whether contraceptives cause an increased risk of vaginitis, including vulvovaginal candidosis (VVC). We investigated 495 women (252 who used contraceptives; 243 who did not) for the presence of VVC. Antifungal susceptibility testing was performed for five antifungal agents and for boric acid, and three virulence factors were also examined. We recovered 129 (26.1%) monofungal populations from vaginal samples of women with acute VVC (AVVC, n = 18), symptomatic recurrent VVC (RVVC, n = 22) and asymptomatic RVVC (n = 28), as well as of other contraceptive users who carri
